Brian, thank you so much for address our unique growing conditions here in warmer areas (I'm in Orange County, CA). Everybody else keeps talking about frost dates. I seldom have a very successful spring garden because it gets so hot so quickly. I really wanted to put in a fall garden this year but didn't know when to plant because of all the heat we've still been having. I think I will go ahead and plant some of my brassica, pea and lettuce seeds right now. The timing of this video is perfect because my garlic finally arrived yesterday and I was going to plant it today; I will wait another month. Your garden is amazing and your videos are so helpful.
I live in the SFV so I knew better than to plant any brassicas in Sept (that's considering I never do a fall garden anyways) 😅 I'm barely starting seeds, hopefully I made the right decision considering our milder climate. Very excited for my garlic too
Here in Canada zone 4A I have a growing season of about 110 days. i planted my garlic a few weeks ago. The snow peas I planted in August have frozen before producing pods. I just finished planting the last 100 tulips that will bloom next May. So that’s it for this season
Your videos are always helpful! I'm in zone 10a, SFBay. I didn't have time to pull out my broccoli before I left for the summer, but when I returned in September, I discovered the broccoli was still producing leggy though pathetic looking side-shoots because my son had continued to water them while I was away. It was too late to plant seeds, and the nurseries in my area were out of broccoli starts. Inspired by your videos on rooting basil and tomato cuttings, I had nothing to lose by trying to root broccoli cuttings. I experimented with rooting the broccoli shoots in water alone and in perlite and water. I found that indeed the shoots will root in both plain water and perlite and water, but they produced more roots in less time in the perlite and water. Looks like I might have broccoli after all this winter! I did basil cuttings at the same time and found that they also did better in the perlite and water. I'll have basil in my kitchen for the winter. Thanks for the inspiration!
Welcome back! We missed you and your videos!! We’re heading into a rainy few days, so hopefully next week I can get some things going. I’m anxious to get cilantro going again...love it...but we have also been having crazy heat. Last week I was so excited because I had to turn the heat on in the house for just a little bit to take the chill off. Of course the very next day the temperatures were in the 90s. Welcome to North Carolina!🤣🤣🤣 As much as we are thrilled to see you, please don’t push yourself. Take time for you and that sweet family...the three of you are what’s important. Love, hugs and continued prayers to you, Emilie and Noah ❤️❤️❤️🤗🤗🤗🙏🙏🙏
Well, a late Fall in my zone 5a has been good for me. I still have healthy summer plants with fruit and blossoms. The air quality from all the fires has made it impossible to spend much time outside. Maybe I can get the garlic, cilantro, carrots, and beets a shot, still. I cut my cabbages and left a few bottom leaves, and they are growing new heads.
Thanks for this.... my indoor seed starting for fall garden was epic fail, and my direct sow carrot seeds were epic fail.... so now I'm scrambling to salvage dreams of a fall garden. Appreciate your guidance. (Central Texas)
I plant spinach here in zone 10a in waves during October, November, and December. It works well. I use cut milk cartons to cover the greens if we get a freeze. It works well. Think of regular spinach as your Thanksgiving and Christmas green.
You are always an inspiration to me. In the Central California, I’m going for sugar snap peas, carrots, and more green beans. Still getting some tomatoes, especially on the “Early Girls”, and will be digging up potatoes to see how I’ve done for my first year. I love to eat the Sweet Potato leaves. Takes a lot of them to make a bite full, but just sauté very quickly after their seasoned. PLEASE take care of yourself. You are a blessing for so many, thank you!. 🌱🌻
Love cilantro!! I planted an entire row of the stuff. I can eat it straight out of the garden!! I'm going to have to try the giant noble spinach cuz I love spinach and I can't grow it here either..
Happy Saturday! We are having a lovely mild fall in Winnipeg (Zone 3) My raised bed gardens are finally done and ready to tuck in the garlic. A bit late but 🤞 Awesome advice! Thank you and have a great weekend! Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! 🇨🇦🎃🇨🇦
I live on the central coast of Calif. I've tried to grow Cilantro a few times, (during the Spring and Summer), now I know why the plants always bolted and went to seed. Thanks.....
9b container garden- Thank you for sharing Brian! Ive learned so much from your channel over the years. I used to plant my peas in the spring but it would get too warm too quickly and while I got some production, I could never get much before the plants succumbed to the heat. Now I plant my peas in late August/early Sept and let them grow through the winter - know when to plant based on where you are is a lesson i learned from watching your channel. My Fall/Winter garden: (4) varieties of kale, (2)v of Mustard, (3)v of "petite" style carrots, (3)v of Bok Choy, (2)v of radishes, (3)v of peas (snap and shelling), Collard and Rainbow Chard. As soon as the peppers and eggplants are done (last crop now) and prepped for overwintering, I'm going to use their containers for (2)v "Salad Mix" lettuce plantings.
Glad to see you back in action. I’m here in Houston TX and I planted all my broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, and cabbage last week. Now were expecting 90’s this week. Sugar snap peas along with romaine went in as well. Peas look great. Bush beans are coming in too!. Hopefully we can get below 85 for the remainder of the year. Carrots were sowed today! so crossing my fingers, its been a tough year those year in SE Texas
It was such a joy to have a video from you this afternoon. Glad you are feeling better. Curious, have you ever tried growing kohlrabi? Mine got hit hard by cabbage caterpillars, but I think the neem oil has saved me maybe...
Good to have you back. I love the comment section. I take notes. My husband loves spinach and I’m yet to be successful. I live in zone 3 gradually transforming to 4 with climate change. My experience with spinach is that it starts to grow and then bolts. With what I’m learning here, next year I will plan a fall planting. I did a second lettuce planting this year and it did great. My other greens survived summer and have done much better this fall. I still have chard and kale in the garden with mustard greens growing wild everywhere. I let many of my mustards go to seed :)). My garlic is in. I find planting the end of September works here and then mulch with straw. Next summer harvest will be in late June/July. I tried leaving carrots in the garden one year but with our 40+ inch frost line, the carrots went to mush. I’m trying a different variety this year, Merida F1 from Territorial seeds which is suppose to winter. I left three carrots in the ground and will cover with straw. I love cilantro and tried a new variety this summer, Calypso Territorial seeds. The cilantro did great. It lasted very long and didn’t bolt. I planted seeds in a grow bag this fall to bring in for winter. I hear the ‘snow’ word in our forecast. I’m ready. I love winter and a break from the garden. How do you all year round folk do it? Ha ha Thank you Brian, I’m learning lots!!
Experimenting with the best tomato pruning for 19 years in San Diego, growing on steep slope. 4’x 8’ steel mesh from HD (used for concrete) - sits in between two stakes vertically, 20” above ground. Clips. Let grow first 2 shoots of each tomato plant = three trunks tomato plants. Next 2-3 shoots let root in water - future plants. All the next shoots on three stems let grow to the first bloom, than cut tips off. So far this gives me the best crop. I do not prune cherry tomato.
I really love your channel because you include different climate zones. I planted Cos Romaine lettuce in the shade of my tomato plants due to the heat in August. The Tomato plants have expired and have been pulled but the lettuce is still growing.
Glad you are doing better hopefully nothing serious...my garden here in ky still going strong had 2 harvests on my beans and prob after the rain today another tomatos dont want give it up peppers I know I need winterize then bjt they want to keep kicking and waiting on cauliflower and got some brocolli heads and shoots. Also waiting on cabbage they are starting to form a head ive covered couple times to keep from frost since so close and gets warm again. Pumpkins and turnips galore. My husband he ready to plow I say ill let u know when it done. Lol 😆 am loving ill be so sad when I dnt have anymore left ....oh also have squash and zuchinni hanging ive gotten few small squash zuchinni has leaves but no surprises. Can't beleive the light frost didnt get them but I keep pushing them along.
Yeah that heat wave was crazy. I started using a small “green house” without the plastic cover that is more mobile in the garden. I put it in morning sun afternoon shade. I put a shade cloth over it and, fortunately, my brassica starts all survived. That said, the generally cooler weather has been great for my last round of cukes and squash which are still thriving. Garlic and bulbs are in the fridge til next month.
Huge fan of your videos! A little of a random question for you: When you first built your garden beds, did you consider the best location in your yard for your crops? And if so please enlighten me on how you came to your decision. I'm struggling to decide the best spot in my yard for a garden bed because the sun location changes throughout the year. Any expert advice would really help! I keep procrastinating starting a garden because of this.
Oh boy, I wish I knew the tips on garlic. I just seeded my garlic 3 days ago and I am in So. Cal zone 10a. I was following this chart online and it said to plant garlic in October! I hope it does well..crossing my fingers. Thanks for sharing.
Hi, Maricela, your garlic should do well. I hope you used 'seed' garlic as store-bought garlic tends to be sprayed to prevent growth. If you're in Riverside and are having a tough time finding seed garlic in the nurseries, I buy at Goodwin's organic market. Research the two main types of garlic: softneck and hardneck. Lots of delicious flavors out there from mild to spicey! #RiversideCountyGardeningMeetup
It's great to have you back. This week our temperatures have been in the high 60s, low 70s but the next two weeks are forecasted to be 80s to mid-90s! If I plant greens will they be ok? I have kale, chard, and sprouting broccoli seedlings, which I'm thinking of holding off planting in the ground until the last week of October. Or will it be okay to plant them now?
Hi Brian, I live in Northern California, and in Spring earlier this year I grew lots of beautiful head lettuce. I am wondering if I start seeds now if I will be able to grow some head lettuce in the Fall. Thoughts?
Ya now I can grow some plants when some of my plants die so I have room.I don’t think I will need to plant lettuce.also I have aero garden so I can just plant things in there but it’s full if you saw my video on the aero garden.thanks for the advice.
Hi. ❤️ your video. I have 45 Earthboxes with 36 of them planned. We live in Bradenton, FL and I planted Most of them from seeds three weeks ago using the little pod kits and then transplanted to the boxes last Saturday. So far so good. I’ve been doing it for five years. I want to plant cutting flowers in the other nine boxes which I’ve not done before. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Are those zinnias in the background? I love them. I want some of those too. Also, I’ve never planted garlic. I’d like to try that.
Welcome back, you have been missed. I hope you are doing well. I’m in San Diego and looking forward to fall garden. Quick question... Vermin problem. Mice and rats have been eating my lettuce, cilantro, tomatoes, melons and cucumbers :-( I have tried trapping, some are too smart; tried protecting them with netting but they either eat through the netting or cut it off the vine and eat from the vine end. Suggestions? I wish to avoid poison.
Historically I’ve had difficulty growing spinach as well (zone 10a). I’m trying “Lizard” variety this season which I understand has excellent heat tolerance. After sowing I cover the bed with shade cloth as spinach prefers cool temps to germinate properly.. soil temp above 80F will really hurt germination rates. Good luck with your spinach crop and overall cool season garden and thanks for the informative video!
I see you have some fun tall zinnias growing. Ive been using mine as a cutting garden flower, and they just keep pushing new blooms. Do you overwinter zinnia? Also, I love my Egyptian Walking Onion, a great green onion that is perennial.
Is fall really already here? My tomato and pepper plants I planted in August are in full blast now and I expect them to give me fruit till Christmas at least. One of my very productive cherry Tom. I planted three years ago. Still doing well.
I'm looking forward to the onion video I am in Southern California as well. Do I need to put the seeds in the freezer before hand? I also want to try ginger, can I put it in the soil now for spring harvest or in spring for fall harvest?
Thanks for your insights (as always) Just curious, would you consider Raleigh, NC a warm weather climate (I think we're zone 7b) or cool? This is my first year doing a fall garden (with great success so far). My greens are doing wonderfully as well as my cherry tomatoes and cucumbers. That's why I'm a bit confused as to what type of gardening climate I'm in. Btw, never thought I'd enjoy growing cabbage, kale, swiss chard and tatsoi - had totally given up on spinach, but right now I have a filled container in my fridge. Thanks again for all you do for us home gardeners :)
You mentioned that your tomatoes will still be going strong for a couple months and I’m in orange county ... is there enough time for planting another round!? I’m from the East Coast so this is kind of weird and I’m still learning what it’s like out here to be gardening.
I pruned my pepper plants and put them in my garage. They are starting to grow new leaves. Should I pinch off these new leaves? Same question for the tomato suckers that I planted.
I planted peas last month when I pulled out the zucchini. They are now putting out true leaves and tendrils so I'm hopeful we'll be having fresh peas in the near future. What variety of garlic do you like to grow?
Our irrigation water got turned off for the winter. So how often do I hand water my plants since it’s colder? We are in Idaho and It’s in the high 50s/60s during the day. I’m zone 6. When the irrigation was on, the drip watered them everyday. This is my first garden and spring/summer went great with the drip. Just not sure what to do now.
I love cilantro, but I cannot grow it, it gets aphids or this or that, or it gets eaten by something else that loves it. So I buy it in the grocery store.
The grasshoppers are annoying me keep eating on the brocolli which isn't bothering them still growing the cauliflower no head yet which worries me do u have an idea how help then out??? Id like get couple heads at least
Oakland here ! Glad to find your channel 👍
Glad to see you back. The gardening advice is a bonus- it's you we miss!
Glad to see you back my man
Woohoo your back ! :) hope you are feeling better ! You and your videos were missed !! 🥑🥦🥬🥒🥕🌶
Yay, you’re back! Take care of yourself, home you are feeling better. You’re my garden guru in central CA. I appreciate you.

You should try growing Green Malabar Spinach. It thrives in our summer heat, is perennial, and tastes amazing!

Glad to see you again, thanks for the list. Keep staying healthy, wear your mask, and wash your hands. God bless you!
Over here in Cape Town, South Africa, we are in a mediterranean climate. I plant anything at any time. Grows slower in winter and shaded in summer.
Welcome back! We missed you and your videos!!

I just planted garlic, leaf lettuce and kale. I live in the Lancaster California area so it’s tricky timing fall planting.
So glad to see your post this morning! I have never grown globe onions, definitely looking forward to a video of that!

My tomatoes are killin it too
I'm waiting for November for most of my winter crops cuz it's just too warm here right now.
Love cilantro!! I planted an entire row of the stuff. I can eat it straight out of the garden!!

I started cabbage from the cord of a store cabbage. I put it in water until roots came, then put it on dirt. 3 cabbage are growing well now.
Missed you Brian!
I love cilantro! It is so helpful to detox your body too.
He’ s baaaaaaaaaaaaack! 😊👍🇨🇦
Good to have you back! I love cilantro. I also love basil. lol
I've harvested broccoli in December with inches of snow on them.
Phew! I'm happy to hear this ty
Very helpful video! Thank you! I’m in zone 6b here north of Boston...I’m going to push my luck and try a few of your suggestions in a low tunnel.
I was harvesting giant spinach in January. Southern West Virginia here.
Thank you. Love cilantro.
Love to add cilantro to our salads enchiladas, salsas and tacos !
So beautiful and nice presentation 🙏👌
you also can plant egiptian spinach if you want it really withstands the high temps
Kale: the noxious weed nothing would kill so farmers sell it as a "health" food.
😂😂😂
I think you must be my long-lost son! LOL
MOM!!

I’m in San Diego and looking forward to fall garden.
Quick question...
Vermin problem. Mice and rats have been eating my lettuce, cilantro, tomatoes, melons and cucumbers :-(
I have tried trapping, some are too smart; tried protecting them with netting but they either eat through the netting or cut it off the vine and eat from the vine end.
Suggestions? I wish to avoid poison.
Try Longevity spinach. I grow in Florida year round. Very heat tolerant. And so tasty!!

Try malabar spinach and longevity spinach. Im in 9B and they grow well and tasty!!
The Coastal Home and Garden Thanks for the tip. I’m going to try both in addition to my regular spinach crop.
Good stuff 🌱🙂👍
I grow rainbow chard in my front yard because its pretty.
Enjoyed the vid Thank You. You mentioned your climate several times. Where is your climate so we have a guide please?
Great advice. Thanks ☺️👍
I see you have some fun tall zinnias growing. Ive been using mine as a cutting garden flower, and they just keep pushing new blooms. Do you overwinter zinnia? Also, I love my Egyptian Walking Onion, a great green onion that is perennial.
Try Sisso Spinach, it grew in dead heat of Summer in South Florida
Thank you
Just set up a seed tray with Texas 1015 super sweat short day onions.
Is fall really already here?
My tomato and pepper plants I planted in August are in full blast now and I expect them to give me fruit till Christmas at least.
One of my very productive cherry Tom. I planted three years ago. Still doing well.
Do you have a video on growing cabbage and cauliflower
Red leaf lettuce got planted here in Ohio end of September. Guess I could cut the bottoms off gallon milk jugs fir cover.
I'm looking forward to the onion video I am in Southern California as well. Do I need to put the seeds in the freezer before hand? I also want to try ginger, can I put it in the soil now for spring harvest or in spring for fall harvest?

Thanks again for all you do for us home gardeners :)
Hello! Thanks for this helpful video! I am in Massachusetts, are you sure I can do carrots and beets now? Please let me know! Thanks
You mentioned that your tomatoes will still be going strong for a couple months and I’m in orange county ... is there enough time for planting another round!? I’m from the East Coast so this is kind of weird and I’m still learning what it’s like out here to be gardening.
do you even check the Farmers Almanc for their suggested dates to plant and transplant? Missed you last week
too.
Tnx for ur info clearly
We started sugar pumpkin seeds in doors and they are ready to transplant. Am I too late to plant them? I’m in San Diego. Thank you for your guidance.
I pruned my pepper plants and put them in my garage. They are starting to grow new leaves. Should I pinch off these new leaves? Same question for the tomato suckers that I planted.
Great information, do you believe in companion gardening?
I planted peas last month when I pulled out the zucchini. They are now putting out true leaves and tendrils so I'm hopeful we'll be having fresh peas in the near future.
What variety of garlic do you like to grow?
6:46 Ahhhh! That explains why my peas died when I transplanted them!
We have kale that loves frost.
What kind of kale? I’m looking for a new type, thank you! 🌱
I’m in the mythical third tier of cilantro tolerance ,by itself or in large quantities, nah I’m out, but just a little bit can bring a dish together.
I’m new on your channel I’m wondering of your location? I’m in st George Utah and just read to build a raised garden .
What are those beautiful flowers behind your left shoulder?
Tc Anderson looks like zinnias
Definitely zinnias
Please state what month and temps you mean when you say " right now" (some if us watch these long after they're posted)
I live in Michigan
When you say we can plant beets, do you mean from seeds or from seedlings?
How about Try Putting Ice Around Your Plant's on Those Heat Wave Day's ... ?!?
Did CaliKim successfully seduce you to move to San Diego?
I moved here from Tahoe - nice skiing but I only could grow Ponderosa pines in my big yard.
