The audio came through great Kevin. Only hear birds chirping in the background so far. I'm using tulle fabric to protect produce from pests. Greenhouse in hot sun can be too hot even in fall. Please do an updated program on pest prevention in future . I grew marigolds from seed started in March and they are just blooming now. Unlike previous years my nasturteums have no aphids...none of my garden does while those are usually gross black aphid magnets.

Know what's brutal on your garden? Evacuating for 17 days! If I'd gotten around to putting in irrigation for my food plants they would've done much better, but my huge thriving tomatoes were also under outdoor grow lights (minimal sun under redwoods), and enclosed in reflective panels. The water and electricity were both cut off much of that time. Bought some IBC 275 gallon tanks, and looking into upgrading to auto-starting generators, so next time I will be less dependant on the infrastructure. Another benefit of container gardening: you can take all your plants with you when you evacuate! 🤪
All that said, I'm lucky (by about 100yds) that I'm just regrowing a garden, not sifting through ashes.

I don't know anyone here in nnys that has ever tried it. I've been gardening for about 50 years and I'm still learning. Learning is a lifetime commitment. Knowledge is the one thing you can take with you lol.

The ash (potash) will help with your Cauliflower and Broccoli as they are mostly grown for their flowers . Also would suggest growing carrots surrounded by a barrier of at least 18 inches if you wish to avoid carrot root fly ( the little beggars can't fly that high) , else wise your usual informative horticultural standard .

Hope that now... 5 days later... you're still out of the fires. I'm north of you in Riverside County and all is well here, except for the smoke.... but it's shading us and helping with the temperatures.
Last weekend I planted a few flats with things like: cabbages, broccoli, kales, iceberg lettuce, and a variety of short day onions. I still have to plant peas, minowase radish, early wonder beets for greens (they even can well), parsley root, parsnips (grow great in 15 gallon pots), carrots, leaf lettuces, parsley, cilantro, spinach, fennel, and red mizuna. I must admit, I plant so much because I know I'll have my share of failures. Last year, Sept 29th was when I got to planting for Fall and it was great. Hoping starting sooner will be good too.

Try boiling diced beets in some vinegar, sugar and some cloves (those small black claw thingies not garlic)
You can add a diced apple to the mixture.
Don't boil them to mush jus a minute or so is enough..
Its the way my grandmother made it and its great !
Cooled and draind in a salad is great too (you don't have to boil them if you use them in a salad jus let them sit over night)
    Its a duch recipie 😉

Thanks for the tips on what to grow! Will definitely apply them to our garden later in the season (spring here). Like you I never liked brussel sprouts until I started frying them or roasting them in the oven with salt and oil. 👌
I still find it amazing how similar Perth weather and San Diego weather are to each other.
Good luck in the garden and stay safe! Hope the fires don't affect you any further. Looking towards the bright side of this situation; at least your garden is getting a bit of potash added to it with the ash rain...
Nevertheless, I really hope those fires are extinguished soon!

Love turnips! Growing up in Ireland, swede (rutabaga) is way more common than turnip and it's even commonly called a turnip there. My mother always cooked swede mashed up with carrot and parsnip. The first time I had an actual real turnip (they call them white turnips there to distinguish them from swedes, which are much bigger and have yellow flesh) I thought it was so delicious...

We just had 6" of snow and freezing temps yesterday and will have an even colder night tonight! Spent about 3 or 4 hours creating tripods over plants and covering them and laying down tarps, etc to try to save as much as we could of our veggie garden! Smoke and ash have been covering us too, but not as badly as where you are. Have planted some beans and more lettuce, and hope to get some produce out of them in October or late September. The challenges of gardening in Colorado are always fun and enjoy what we do! Hope the fires get under control in Cali soon! Cheers Kevin!

Hoping you and your loved ones are safe from the fires! Thank you so much for this fall video, I live in SE Georgia and was really debating when to start my fall crops. We're like y'all and have those loooooong heat spells well into what would be "fall" for so many people! And I think you may have made me attempt to try brussel sprouts this go around as well -- roasted with some salt sounds amazing! :)
Also when you come into my yard in the dark of night to bless my garden, what should I leave for you Garden Santa? lol

Please be safe! I have family in LA County with some being FD. May He watch over you all and keep you safe 🙏🏻❤️ I was able to harvest some broccoli earlier this season (7a) but decided to leave them in the planters. A few weeks ago I planted bush beans around the broccoli and holy moly! They LOVE each other! Making notes this year and this buddy duo is on the list for next year. For carrots I direct sowed in a planter with peas, nasturtiums and some herbs. They all seem happy together. And my goodness. This year was the first time growing peas (sugar snap and snow) and I may need a 12 step program 🤤 I’ll be stocking up on seeds for 2021. Just this evening as soon as I came home from work, I pulled the peas I have in planters with some cukes by the stairs and I ate them all before even opening the front door. And this is someone who NEVER had peas like this before this year. 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 Crack peas. Yup. I’ll be trying to figure a way to grow them inside over there winter under my grow lights. I may go thru a withdrawal 😩 Am I dwelling on the peas too much?.....

Here in Oakland the sky is apocalyptically orange due to wildfire smoke. The light is so red and looks so wrong. 😖 When I checked the garden this morning I felt like I almost couldn't see whether the cherry tomatoes were ripe because it was like looking at everything through a red filter.

Yes, very weird, I was glad to see it wasn't due to my local fire, mostly higher in the atmosphere. I guess some gentle filtered sunlight will probably help my plants that sat unwatered for 17 days recover.

Could you do a video about growing in hot climates, I live in Los Cabos Mexico, I am managing to grow some herbs in containers, but would like to see how i can make the most of my garden in high heat.

Use shade cloth, grow in foam boxes, I dunno, it's hard. I will try drip irrigation this year, Australia is hot too. Block any hot winds.

You definitely don't need to slather Brussel sprouts with oil in order to make them delicious!!!

I tried yard long beans from my friends that were urban growers in Long Beach. They have so many different kinds of vegetables. I don't recognize the different tomatoes and peppers. Ground Cherries, Cucumelons.
