I love that he doesn't consider making a joke about the sexual abuse by priests, low hanging fruit. Sensitive, intelligent and down to earth. Love ya man.
There’s nothing you can’t make funny, I’m not for censorship. Perhaps only to make funny if it’s mocking the church and the perpetrators...I was wasted when I made that comment, thanks for reminding me.
Black books is one of the best shows ever made. Wish they had more seasons. I have to go read my little book of calm now where the cheap wine is gooderer
@@haveagreatday9865 thank you, you're right, I found the entire series on Dead Parrot channel! Fantastic, especially from last episode furst season and forward (as far as I've come binge watching these lol). Dylan's a good actor too!
I only saw Black Books on UA-cam. While it is very good, Dylan Moran's 'Monster' is surely more important to standup than Black Books is to sitcom. And most of his career was in standup. So I see him as a comic before a sitcom writer.
Dylan is very astute. His remark about Catholic Ireland going the way of the Soviet system is spot on. Schizophrenia is the word when it comes to the late Soviet and post-Soviet world.
Listening to this to day, when it was just anounced that the irish goverment will seal the records of the woman and children abused by the church, is giving this even more gravity!
It's shameful beyond comprehension. The Catholic church's history of violence is unparalleled. It perpetuates an entire culture of violence and oppression. Dylan is a great man for both delivering his arguments when he feels it's relevant to what he discusses and not making his writing about an anti-religious mission as such. The thing is missionaries are the problem in the first place. And that type of attitude some do have doesn't serve the purpose either bc it causes a complete disconnect with those who might need to question where they invest their trust and devotion, like the man said here briefly.
Yes, and ideally an interviewer would have, but I think that shows what Dylan is really all about, which is standup. It's more people who talk about Black Books - which was more mainstream - without talking about his exceptional standup career and it's culmination in the epic 'Monster'.
I went to Catholic school for 8 years. Confirmation was the first time I had a man slap me in the face and had to thank him for it. That was the Church’s stance on abusing women. When St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland, it was a reference to driving out the Celtic kings who had dragons tattooed on their forearms. Christianity was used to keep poor people poor and ignorant and constantly pregnant while giving them people to hate, ie Protestants and Jews and anyone who was not Catholic. Bravo to you Dylan for speaking out against the dogma that kept Catholic countries filled with an underpaid, overworked and ignorant population.
I remember being on my knees with a "Christian brother" standing over me today it would be denounced as child abuse but we thought it was just part of the curriculum. The good old days.
I randomly chose 20 different points through this interview. At all 20 points, it was the host talking. I think Maron talks too much for an interviewer
Maron has his virtues. If you were to put on paper what he gets out of his guests in one hour podcast it would outweigh everything they told on all the other interviews and podcasts together.
I grew up in Ireland too and am a few years older than Dylan, and some of what he’s banging on about here is exaggerated. I was equally agnostic growing up and yeah while we all had to go to church every Sunday (that was just the done thing and we all paid it lip service anyway), which only continued until our mid teens anyway. The majority of those I knew stopped by then (mid 80s). My folks, and parents of my friends at the time, never pressurised us to continue going. I’ve no time for the catholic church either (or any organised religion) but the pedo priests were a tiny minority here, and yeah they were protected by some of the equally criminal bishops, who instead of calling the police, just shunted them on to the next parish or overseas. But this wasn’t the sole preserve of Ireland! I had a great laugh and freedom growing up in Ireland late 70s and 80s. Church here was already dead by then in my view and absolutely held no sway over us. Might have done back in his folks and my parents day though, I wouldn’t disagree with that.
The Church was finished by the 80s? Despite the fact that homosexuality was still illegal and an imprisonable offence. In 1983 the 8th Amendment was voted in with a >66% portion of the vote banning women’s right to choice over their own bodies - something which was only reversed in 2018. Divorce was illegal until 1995 and only passed by a 1% majority. And the rape of children was more than a ‘ah sure only a minority are at it’ issue. The abuse of children was widespread in the church and was met with perpetual silence. To be honest there is an inexhaustible list - banning of contraceptives, Magdalene laundries operated until 1996. I’m glad you grew up without that sense of stigma, but try chatting to anyone who had a ‘child out of wed-lock’ and ask them about social freedom. If anything, Moran has understated it.
I find his analysis on God and religion in Ireland very narrow and uninformed. Im the same age as dylan and thats not the what i grew up with. How condensing to say only "poor people" pray. I expected more from dylan than that cheap comment. To say catholic church ruled over ireland is rubbish. You don't get the Irish to do anything they dont want to do.
I really don’t get why people like this guy. Not funny in the slightest. Everyone creams their pants saying he’s a great, edgy comedian. Never seen it He does the S Lee diffident stick without being convincing and he has the comedic originality of father Ted
His love and depth of language is amazing. "Entertainment is from the Old French word entretenir meaning hold together or support. It was associated with hospitality--when you entertained a guest, you were keeping them happy. From there, it came to mean amuse or distract"
Brilliant interview. Really interesting. Great interviewer and wonderful interviewee.

I mean he’s done them. “Granny, how MANY priests do you have to blow to get into heaven?” Springs to mind

The conversation was interesting. Surprisingly, it seemed Marc had never watched an episode of Black Books. That’s pretty ridiculous.
