    This was a very interesting and fascinating conversation. Really nice tone between these two. I usually think of Dylan as springing between laid back detachment and high-strung manic alertness, so it's nice to actually hear him sounding comfortable here with Marc.
    Looking at the image on the video just makes me want to do his accounts and serve him a glass of wine. And a ham sandwich. With a pickle.

    In just 15 seconds and with such simple words, Dylan delivers a message that - if everyone took heed of it - would remove a huge portion of the world's problems. It's such a simple and obvious message, yet the vast majority of people ignore it and cling to nationalism (and other more localised versions that come out in gang wars and the like).
    He's brilliant; funny as hell, and spot-on on so many societal observations that really should be obvious but somehow aren't.

      This is something I struggled to understand until I heard him say this. I never did history in school and was never interested in the troubles at all. I always thought sure we've our own troubles now! Why do people around me and in close circles still argue about that? But Dylan made sense of it for me!

    Moran said something very accurate that sometimes a person has a degree in something and talks authoritatively about an author or subject but hasn't really studied those beyond the main points. It's understandable since there's so much stuff to study and so much more going on in life in general. It's just that we all need to be a bit more humble, I think.

    Marc Marons podcast functions as a way to understand and get to know people. Its not based on "research" or presumptive questioning. If you listen to his other interviews or do an ounce of research on him, you'll find that his style is less of an interview to plug a show and more of a explorative conversation, chronologically starting from the roots of the guest up to where they are currently sitting. Its more natural and genuine. I havent heard Dylan enjoy an interview this much.

    I hope Dylan would do another show like Black Books. I can't count the times how often i already watched Black Books. Through that i came to look for more materials of him and Bill Baley and god do they have awsome stand ups.
    54:00 I never imagined Bill Hicks had a hard time in the USA because of his attitude towards the empire. Was he critisized for that? Sounds similar to the red scare in the 1950' ^^?
    1:00:30 As a none native english speaker i was not aware of the 'word' origin within the english language of 'believe' to be 'held/hold dear'. The german translation 'Glaube' gives a quite different meaning towards to be the opposite of 'knowing'. We have a saying which littarily goes "believe is not knowing". So when trying to fuse these together, it would be to holding dear something you do not know.
    1:03:10 They often still are, insulated and self governing, perhaps they have become better in detecting those which would cause trouble, but there are still cases in several countries again and again within the catholic church where this shit still takes place and the state often just stands besides doing nothing ... so much for secularism in the west, a project not fully concluded.

    Dylan is brilliant and I agree with him on the Irishness that americans go on about but I have to say I am interested in where my people came from and I did not grow up having it shoved in my face. I was not raised to stand on a street on paddys day in a bad dress and hop around like a lil idiot . But...I dig the fact that some of us have a deep history to our families. But the annoying, braggart thing that some people shove in your face ...my gawd. I am so happy to come from irish people but i am more interested in having a great conversation with an Irish person. And I mean from Ireland. But I love my grandparents so much.

    • @obscurebandfan
      @obscurebandfan 7 років тому

      stacyblue1980 I'm 2/4ths Irish American and I get what you're getting at it. Every St. Patrick's day you have some jackass with a last name that starts with "O" or "Mac" that goes on and on about being Irish and they probably couldn't name a town in Ireland other than Ireland.

    • @themaggattack
      @themaggattack 4 роки тому

      I'm American and I have an American accent. A person's accent is their defining element. I don't labor under the delusion that I'm Irish.
      Yes I do. NOBODY WILL EVER TAKE MY IRISHNESS FROM ME! 🤣 My blood is Irish and I'm a dual citizen of Ireland and the U.S.
      My grandma was borne in Ballina during the "Free State" days. She and her 13 brothers & sisters were spread to the winds, but they always kept us cousins in touch with each other. And they taught us some Irish language and history as well. We can trace our family lineage back ages and ages. It's literally written in stone... on the gravestones at the cemetary in Ballina. (Something the Brits actually didn't manage to destroy.) Despite my love of a good fairy story, I've no romantic delusions about Ireland. I love Dylan Moran, and I agree that we should try to get along with all humans across national borders.
      *However*, there is a reason why we say "lest we forget". The Brits are STILL AT IT, trying to fuck up Ireland with Brexit. Ireland doesn't even matter to them. (Not all Brits, mind you, some Brits are my lovely cousins, who are also of Irish descent.)
      I care very much what happens to my cousin's children, and that's tied directly to caring what my great grandparents suffered through to give them their freedom.

      +Leslie Graham - no. fucking. way. thats so cool I wish I lived in a place with such deep rooted heritage. but na maron has said the same thing to so many European guests, "your old walls and shít vs. young USA"

    Shut up Marc. Bring the guest on, ask a question and let them talk. This was 80/20 Marc Maron, it should have been 20/80.

      No, it was perfectly fine. Everyone else enjoyed it, including Dylan. You're the only low iq person here.

    OK. I have persevered beyond my endurance. Now, I will shut him up. Pity, all I wanted was to hear is what Dylan had to say. Why do these idiotic interviewers think that we want to hear them rather than the person whom they are interviewing. Oh. well. That is what is really going wrong in our world today.

    Why is Marc so afraid of being labelled an atheist. He literally says in the same sentence, "I don't believe in god, but i'm not an atheist". Sorry bro but by definition, yes you are.

      Maron has said on a couple of occasions that he's not an atheist because he doesn't care to debate the issue. To Maron, an atheist is someone who wants you to know that he believes there is no and wants you to know why he thinks that way. Maron has no interest in pursuing the issue.

      Still by definition an atheist, and everyone should care about it because if it were true then it is the most important issue there could be

      I think it's tied up the context of the term, if you describe yourself as an atheist then you're employing the language of theological debate. By refusing to take up the term he gets to avoid an argument that he has no interest in.

      Maybe you don't understand that this is not your typical interview format. It's a long form conversation. That's what Maron does, and that's what Dylan enjoys.

    From this, the interviewer is an eejot, because he talks and makes noises way too much. Terrible listener.

      Check out my comments just recently. I am furious at this spoiler who thinks he is much more important than the person who he is interviewing.
