Bo Burnham Thinks Everyone Acts Like An Eighth Grader Online (HBO)

  • Bo Burnham’s career started on the Internet.
    He was catapulted into the entertainment industry after UA-cam videos of him performing silly songs in his childhood bedroom went viral. His career took him bounding from comedy albums to stand-up specials, bit parts in sitcoms to starring in his own television series, directing specials for Jerrod Carmichael and Chris Rock, and now, his very first feature film, "Eighth Grade."
    Burnham’s directorial debut chronicles a week in the life of a 13-year-old girl as she graduates from middle school. Confessional videos that his main character, Kayla, records on her laptop function as vignettes throughout the film. But this is not a nostalgic story of a teen whose online antics lead to unexpected celebrity. Instead, Burnham focuses on a more anonymous experience of digital life.
    “I've always been annoyed that we only talk about the people that go viral on the Internet,” Burnham told VICE News. “And as someone that goes viral, it's actually not that interesting.
    The result is a gripping snapshot of anxiety and adolescence in the digital age, but unlike most Hollywood glamorizations of youth, Burnham leans into hyperrealism. He casts real teens, lets hormonal acne have its close-up, and deliberately leaves in every “Um,” “Like,” and “You know.”
    “Rather than making a movie that makes fun of a UA-cam celebrity with a bunch of subscribers and stuff which everyone has done, why not make a movie about a kid that's watching one of those people? That wants to be them and is sort of drowning in the cultural standards set by all those people?" Burnham explains. "Because that's really what's happening.”

    People dont give him enough credit for what he's done...to me he's the first genuine artist to transition into t.v and film from UA-cam...and that's because he's brilliant...as an entertainer, artist, and a person. Very smart guy. I admire him a lot...and I'm 30 but wish I was in 8th grade...as in back in 2001....I wouldnt want to be in 8th grade in 2018 LoL

    When I went off internet and TV for a month I had the groundbreaking realization that youtubers are not my friends. They are not people I know, not people that know me, and certainly not people I should go to for emotional support. It was insane to realize that I had actually been looking at someone on a screen in that way, and I hadn’t really realized why until watching this video.

    This is sounds like a great movie, with all the drama that netflix fat-shaming movie presented (also "thirteen reasons why" netflix series), people need to release some better researched movies that will help a younger/newer generation rather then everyone hating on how bad its delivery was/is. This is probably more important towards the teenager movies that are popping up now. teen movies really just suck now and are inaccurate to how teens actually act.

    • @0thrman
      @0thrman 6 років тому

      good movie to watch about teenagers called "the dirties," it over the top in lots of the plot, but seem more believable any story i've seen.

    • @no_misaki
      @no_misaki 6 років тому +1

      That Netflix movie is not "fat-shaming" at all. Reactionaries will drum up whatever baseless claims needed to serve their agenda and you're merely regurgitating their talking points.

    • @0thrman
      @0thrman 6 років тому +1

      Белић Нико I'll take your word on it, haven't seen it myself, but the premises of fat girl becomes skinny through having her mouth shut doesn't feel like a good plot point to have in our "feel good about your body" world we live in now.

    • @no_misaki
      @no_misaki 6 років тому

      0thrman it's meant to be a relatable character arc that accentuates the amount of damage that vilifying and dehumanizing fat people can cause to ones psyche and body image. Being shamed to the point of risking bodily harm to conform (lose weight) is a situation I'd venture to say a large portion of fat people have found themselves in. The whole body positivity movement isn't focused on improving the realities of their situation, rather, they're more focused on denying those realities and promoting pseudoscience (such as being obese not being inherently unhealthy when, you know, it objectively is) to avoid working on themselves.

    • @0thrman
      @0thrman 6 років тому

      Белић Нико O I know what they were trying to do, it's just whether they accomplished that through their story is a question for debate.

      p.d d.p That's fine if you don't like that brand of humor. I actually initially found him through his UA-cam music videos which were probably still somewhat versions of that, but were written with so many lyrical jokes that had double meanings but fit so well in song format. It's kind of crazy and not something I would have expected from a kid in high school, nerd or not. To each his own, but I find deeper meaning in alot of his stuff ignoring some of the "childish" jokes he was still a great lyricist, and able to make music out of a small number of words. I also thought that Art is Dead was a good kind of commentary on comedians in general including himself.

    I think it is a common misconception that the average human being behaves or even thinks very far above an 8th grader. I mean this both on and off the internet. The average adult admits they haven't read a book since high school. I have a theory that people don't maintain their current intellectual position if they do nothing to grow personally. Instead they slowly lose the ground they once had. America is a perfect place to showcase adults acting like children, but only because those adults give as much attention to personal development as a child does.

      I've always been creeped out by the "relationship" UA-camrs have to maintain to keep their audience. It's all fake. They don't love you, they don't know you, and they don't care about you (and there's nothing wrong with that). And the "emotional" attachment fans have for their favorite UA-camrs also creeps me out. I tend to think they have mental or emotional issues. It's okay to be a fan, but... It's just a person on the internet and nothing more

      cause if it was an actual relationship, where it works both ways, it'll be a friend not a fan. Also, with having a personal relationship with a fan the power dynamics are off.

      "Personal relationship with a fan." is an oxymoron. It's not personal, and it's not a real relationship.

      Why do you think "hot" girl youtubers leave half assed replies to random creepers on their videos? Like the dude will comment "omg I fucking love you so much, you're the best and most Beautiful woman ever I enjoy your videos soooo much!1!1" and then she reply like "😍". The ONLY reason she does that is to give that desperate ass guy some incentive to keep watching, giving money to her Patreon, etc. she will do this for every other comment. It's all a ploy, its to get money from desperate ass dudes that are so dumb they think she actually cares about them. It's fucking sad honestly lmao

    "When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child. But, when I became a man, I put away the things of a child." No one listens. That's why 8th grade mentalities are everywhere.
