So for the next video about Halberd because apparently you all have halberd lust (Hey, no judging here. I do too) I'm thinking it'll be something relating to Halberd vs swords. There really isn't much in manuscripts that I'm familiar with that talks about sword vs polearm, but I have a couple ideas rattling around the dome that I'm sure you'll all enjoy. WHILE I"M HERE, the way you'd use a poleaxe and a halberd would basically be the same. I wouldn't be able to slice with the hook of the halberd as I would with the hammer of a poleaxe, but I'd strike with them in the same way. So almost anything that I present with a halberd, would be almost identical with a poleaxe.
Do you know of anyone who makes training Poleaxes? I have one custom made but the head either gets ripped out if I don’t have it bolted in, or snaps in the tang if I do.

I am. If you check the first video I mention that my Halberd interpretations come from Meyer's Art of Combat.
I believe that one of the shortcomings of HEMA is that we* don't practice the full scope of the halberd; wouldn't it be appropriate to fight with a dagger or rondel as a backup at all times? Given that, could you give your opinion and demonstrate some of the transitions between halberd and dagger/grapple maneuvers?
*Edit: I typed "we" despite myself not being part of any HEMA group or anything. D'oh! ;P
I dig the halberd, poleaxe, spears because they are the main weapons and not sidearms such as swords. They are the main course, I would love to see more of them, especially poleaxes. Cheers.
The thing is that Poleaxes and halberds are almost identical. Biggest difference is the hammer on the back instead of the hook. But the way you'd strike with them is basically the same.
I agree, however I once saw a style where you put your butt of the poleaxe in front like a quarterstaff and hit with the front when you create an opening. Which I would love to see you two show us in this channel. It's fancy and effective in a duel i assume.

For those interested, like myself, Purple Heart is currently in the design process of making a sparring safe Halberd in the vein of their spears.
I personally wasn't too much into their spear heads, very expensive for something I found didn't make things all that much safer. But I'll definitely check it out.

This is bloody familiar to when I was doing chinese weapon martial arts with quarterstaff and spear. Especially the drop and block.

Julian talks more about it in the Patreon extra content, but in short, not really. There's no material to be able to spar safely at intensity that is still able to represent the weapon correctly.
These techniques remind me very strongly of the techniques I was taught with quarterstaff in mantis kung fu. I guess same species, same style?

Thank you for this upload!! Really enjoyed seeing more of the versatility of the halberd. My hats off to Julian and Nicole for always creating easy to understand technical videos. I hope you guys can record some of your sparring sessions or competitions for us to see. Curious how these techniques would look against other weapons like the longsword. Is there any specific events aimed towards spears and halberds?

As of right now, there isn't any tournaments based on it, safety is the major concern. I talk more about it in the patreon extra content, but essentially the safer you make the materials on the weapon, the more inaccurate and useless it becomes.
But next halberd video will probably be related around it vs swords. There isn't too much about it in the manuals, but I do have a couple ideas to play around with that I'm sure people will enjoy.
Ah, gotcha. Has using two materials been tried yet? Example: structure is made strong but the edges have more cushion to it, curious how that would perform. One handed swords or the longsword? Either way, you should definitely write your own manual on it if there isn't much information historically. Looking forward to it!
A book in the future might happen, I'd want to find reliable materials to at least get some light sparring experience before I think about it too much. I'm not exactly the most construction savvy person in the world, so finding people who can make a prototype is more difficult. In the extra content I show these spear heads that have been made recently, they're a harder rubber so I do find it promising. There might be something there.

Given the nature of the weapon and its intended application some of thoughs techniques will be addapted to a smaller space. Running the head down the shaft in a short sharp move in transition to a thrust, strike or control for example. When pressed in close and the head is framed between the legs and haft held high your opponent may crowd your attempt to thrust, or to hook/cut the leg. Instead advance the head slightly placing the tip on the ground step in while raising the haft and close to one side. Again this is close and brutal but a common move most especially in war.
What are you using for the halberd? Would it be safe to spar with in the kind of gear one might wear for a steel longsword competition?

And no, not at all. We would kill eachother with these. In the Patreon extra content Julian talks a bit more about the materials in order to make sparring with a halberd safe, but in short, it's almost impossible to spar with a halberd (That's still accurate and acts like one) and be safe.

We do not. But a lot of the fundamentals will remain the same. For the most part what's applicable with one, will be with the other.
How much difference in distance or reach do you notice when using the axe versus the point? The axe-strikes look to me like you're standing notably closer than when thrusting, but I'm conscious the point is only an extra 6 inches or so.
Oh it's huge. With the thrust you can execute a flying thrust. But if I'm holding the weapon normally, the distance is about the same. It just depends on the technique and the distance between us when I set it up, and how far I step out vs I step forward.

May I ask if any of the manuals cover one handed axe, war hammers, or mace techniques? If so were they wielded in tandem with a shield, or perhaps techniques with just the weapon?
Not really. There might be some mentions of them here and there, but no comprehensive explanation on how to use them.
Closest you may find is that Fiore talks a tiny bit about a big stick or some sort of large cudgel. Theoretically could be mildly relatable to a mace. Your best bet to get an idea is go through sources and find similar ideas that could compare. IE, Meyer's Dussack could be a decent start to a single handed axe or mace, etc.

What are the advantages of your dominant hand being at the bottom? Surely you’d have more point control if your dominant hand is forward?
It's the opposite actually, you have more point control with the dominant at the back. I use the forward hand as a pivot point, and then the back hand to control the back which in turn controls the point. If you check the previous halberd video, watch the disengage, you can see what I'm talking about there.
If I use my front hand to control my point, then I'm moving the entire weapon which makes it very easy to overcommit and be taken advantage of.
would it work if a slice from a sword comes at you, and you use the space in the staff that you are not holding to knock it over, still keep your halbert at the ground. Then use your halbert to push yourself to your opponent to fall off.
We need more on halberds, also spears, more close combat with daggers. I need it i'm hema junkie :P

Don't the manuscripts mostly show the butt spike pointing towards your opponent and the axe head pointed away? Why is it different here?

Vdude - maybe you're thinking of pollaxes, instead of halberds? (they *are* similar weapons, too...)

I'l like to see you guys try poleaxes next but this is close enough for me.
They're basically the same. Obviously with the hammer at the back I can't hook and slice with it, but I can still use it for strikes just like how I would with a halberd's hook. It would just be more effective against armour.
So outside of the occasional little difference here and there, they're pretty interchangeable.

Would all of those movements work as well as shown, if Nicole had a halberd too (and not a stick/spear). She would have the same possibilities to hook/pull/bind as Julian with his weapon. I imagine knocking the shaft away is more difficult, if she turns the hook on her halberd to get contact with Julian's weapon.
For the purposes of this video, no. Of course there's lots of options that she can perform to counter my initial actions as well, but I'm just going through some basic concepts to give a general idea on how Halberd combat would have gone (According to Joachim Meyer anyway). If we were to actually spar then yes it would make a huge difference.

Now if only I could find a good halberd in the middle range. (About $250) Everything is either cheap garbage / wall hangers or $500+.

If you are not facing mounted cavalry or functioning as an area denial unit I don't see the point in the halberd. Something closer to a spear with some hooking/reaping functionality makes more sense.
