I was blessed to have met Trane and Alice Coltrane at a Book Store in Los Angeles. Saw him several times live.
wow that's fantastic to hear-great icons of jazz and humanity
That is a blessing 🥰❤️🖤💚✊🏾❤️🖤💚 I'm fortunate enough to have lived in the same city as Brotha and Sista, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾the chocolate community is truly rich and blessed 🥰❤️🖤💚✊🏾❤️🖤💚

what bookstore?? amazing
Barnes & Noble😮@@zg-mzga
As much as I love John Coltrane's music
I've never seen any footage of him speaking
thanks!
I was thinking the same thing. I’ve been looking and can’t seem to find anything…in a way it’s so fitting for JC. He forever lives in the universe of sound.
I am 43 years old and I play A Love Supreme and Crescent every day. I also play Alice Coltrane. What a blessing to human ears and human heart. Spirit music
you got me beat but i definitely play a love supreme 2 to 3x a week for sure and will be checking out crescent tonite lol thanks!!
I’m Listening ~aNewly to “Ascension” again @2023.
Namaste’ 🎶🕉
I am an idiot, for a moment (I am a Jazz musician) I thought that you played it in your instrument and that would be a strange routine, to play a "Love Supreme" every day.
Same here@A Love Supreme.
Have you heard Equinox?
Love all his works!
@@KingofgraceSARA Check out McCoy Tyner, the piano player from his quartet. He has some stuff you'll like if you're into the quartal voicings you hear in Coltrane's music.
Such a wise soul!
He left the planet just a few months after this, but his music lives on strong as ever!
indeed a real true one off
It’s timeless
I remember seeing Trane playing a Bass Clarinet at the It Club in Los Angeles before the show. I found out later it had been given to him by Sally Dolphy (Eric Dolphy's mother).
I went to Angelus Rosedale looking for Dolphy’s grave…I saw Ivie Anderson’s(Duke Ellington’s singer)grave…and others but I never found Dolphy’s

My Dad's Boy. As far as he was concerned THERE'S COLTRANE ! and there's everything and everyone ELSE!
Amen!
Love hearing Trane’s voice. Kofsky could have asked better questions. Thanks for posting.
The questions seemed to have a strong motif, he leaned particular hard on the African American “negro” experience in the music. I wish he would’ve leaned more into the worldly implications and technical aspects of his improvisations IMHO
Yes, I feel Kofsky was trying to pigeonhole Trane and reduce his work to a political stance in line with his own. Nonetheless, I like the interview.
Thanks so much. Despite the some rather uncomfortable questions from the interviewer, Coltrane remained professional and redirected them where he could, and did it masterfully. I could hear the humility, thoughtfulness and respect that Coltrane had for music, and his complete commitment. The part about playing in the clubs was very insightful - he needed to put in the work over the years to master the instrument and his command of the music, but once that was sufficient, he really wanted to continue learning and growing creatively and sharing that with the audience, and they weren't always ready for it. It's interesting how often listeners want to hang on to a particular performance or recording and keep experiencing it (which is great for everyone), but for the most serious artists, they are always trying to capture a new moment of connection, and pushing the boundaries. Once they master one thing - they are always looking for the next. You don't get to Coltrane's level without that sort of an attitude. I think it's got to be tough in many ways though, because you're always pushing yourself, never completely satisfied with what you've done - always wanting to go further, but it's the journey that is exciting, because there's no goal line in music. That's the impression I get from Coltrane.
Loved ‘Trane,,,,
Goodness. This is Gold. What a Treasure.
John Coltrane was a very creative and innovative artist who was a real and important trendsetter.
This my cousin my 5th cousin may he Rest In Peace ❤
Listening to J.C. music is one of my all time favorites in Jazz although it is much more than just just music..it's like a language unto itself that conscious people Listen to..his genius is only match able to those who translate music and mind. I met Alice and most of musicia who played with but I never met John..peace
If the music doesn’t penetrate than one has No Soul……
What an incredible musical master!
THANK YOU!
Love you John. Wish we had more interviews
RIP . Thanks for the upload.
John COLTRANE : his voice, so soft, gentle and warm🥹🥹🤍🤍🤍
Always thought his voice was deeper. Still a cool cat 😎
Beautiful ❤️
Pure truth
No disrespect to Joplin, Hendrix, Marley,Beatles, Stones etc. fans, I would imagine Trane hits me on a similar level. Surely a spiritual experience when listening
An 🎶Spiritual Assimilation of Mind’ time.
I have to admit the interviewer made me feel somewhat agitated and on edge he didn't seem to be still or relaxed enough to let John answer before he was on to something else and a lot of the questions were somewhat questionable but he was just at that stage of his journey however, John Coltrane's wisdom, maturity and character shone through like a train whistle in middle of the night...Love, Peace and Assention ❤
Thank you for posting this.
Today is the 97th birthday of the saint
Thanks for sharing….it was enlightening. 🫡
Merci beaucoup !
Damn these questions are so bad 😂. First time I’ve heard him talking, he sounded like a sweet thoughtful man. We are blessed with his music

The Greatest! Coltrane!
52:10 is the quote: “You have to be still to understand.”
Journalism is the art to separate the wheat the chaff -unfortunately the interviewer mostly acts as an imperious chav’ …
Even so; John’s grace, generosity, strength and stillness shines through.
That is inspiring.
Bless his soul, family friends, fans and musical legacy amen❤️🖤💚🙏🏽❤️🖤💚he looked like a younger version of Brotha B B King and he sounds like him too😘
There was an attempt to connect the Music with Movement. When Reading interview in Simpkins Coltrane or Chasing the Trane seem like they admedietaly pressed Trane trying to Connect what Malcolm was saying and Musicians.
Prometheus gave man the gift of fire, and for that he was punished by the gods. Coltrane taught us to put the fire out, and for that, he is god themself. Coltrane must have a lot of courage and wisdom to dare protest against that great sacrifice.
My hero.
Mine too brother.
Style aint black. Style is Style.
Thank you Mr Coltrane.
The God speaks. Finally.
BEST SAX PICKER TO EVER SHIT BETWEEN TWO SHOES!!!!!!
Ase' my brother.
coltrane was as they traditionally said a kind and gentle soul, none more true than here and these questions. the interviewer's perceived to be untrained and perhaps a bit crude. a testament to the good and pleasing grace of mr coltrane.
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Maestro Trane !!
Thank you.
♥️His 🎶
god this guys asking him some cringe questions. why is he so focused on race? i love how coltrane wasnt though
Look up my Uncle Tyrone Washington. He is a jazz master. A great jazz musician who played with the greats!
Ok, lets check it out
@laylahalgharib3150 STILL HERE ? Greetings if so. He s not that much talked about, though has @ least an lp on BN. Gotta look up if he has a topic ch on the forum. Suggest interview and release if still possible.
thank you for sharing. I will do so!
Listening to Tyrone Washington (Jody Grind w/ Horace Silver.) YES!!! A Jazz Master no doubt!
it's a tribute to coltrane that he respectfully and patiently answers this guys stupid questions
想像していた以上に声質が高い事に驚愕。
Imagine being able to talk to Coltrane and just asking him this nonsense
I have it on Cassette!
These questions are WACK! But Coltrane answered like the champion that he IS.
6:45 issues are important , "issues are part of what is this time. " aint it odd how you don't hear any subversive lyrics about the government, or political issues anymore? could it be that they are blocking all this music from getting to the main stream?
Yes it is!!! The first thing that Dictators do is control the Music.
interviewer is doing the same thing that they do today. wasting time on politics and race....kudos to Coltrane for not taking the bait.
Only an intellectually and emotionally infantile adult with less than half a brain cannot comprehend the interconnection of Music, Politics & Race. Your comment is highly appreciated.
this reporter IS NOT a musician.
very evident lol
I think the interviewer is Franz Kofski
Coltrane play the changes
Play OUTSIDE THE CHANGES
PLAY NO CHANGES
PLAY BEAUTIFUL, SPIRITUAL.
--------THE ONLY ONE-------
Why is the interviewer insisting so much in tying up Coltrane's music to any radical political movement?
He's a musician, let's talk about music.
Music Is Performed. ItSelf is not
the interviewer frank kofsky was apparently a marxist historian
The interviewer is apparently a radical left socialist
Saint John
for some reason i feel dissonance between the way Coltrane looks and talks, it's my first time hearing him talk
What does he say around the 3:00 mark when the interviewer says "but it does seem to be a fact that most innovations are by black musicians?" It's interesting that players like him and even Miles seem to not be that bothered by white jazz musicians (despite everything you hear). Seems to always be these interviewers pushing race divide on them, and they're like 'whatever, if he can play, he can play.' They tried to build rapport with Miles saying, white folks haven't had the black ghetto experience, so can't play etc. He was like (paraphrasing) "My Mother was pretty, and my Dad was a dentist - I grew up a rich kid & can still play, so it's BS" lol.

Could very well be the most annoying interview I have ever listened. The line of questioning was amateur; lacked any depth. I had to check out at 4:34.
I naturally wished that Ye Comment had entered so more Positively posed. Though I recognized the too- natural…?
The Young downbeat Writter followed We 🌎🌏🛫over Years; asking fore interviews.
Eventually He Took I to He’ AUTO 🚘 & played This Interview. As an 🦻🏿Credential??? So I Talked with He, after That.
Most annoying? Drama queen.
this interviewer seems obsessed with trying to get Coltrane to say something profound (or perhaps controversial) about Race, but Coltrane just refuses to take the bait
Seems likes he's just asking race based questions about white or black audiance. Not a good interview, but it's nice to hear Coltrane speak
looks like Denzel !!!
Wow! He DOES!!!
The Interviewer does not seem to get to the interior of Trane's thinking nor does he allow for Trane to muse on the feelings he was delving into with his music. The interviewer comes off as sort of frenetic which is a stark and profound contrast to Trane. It's a shame..but at least we are able to hear Trane's voice and get a sense of the extraordinary gentility of the man.
Every Time...#FreeTibet2022
Seems like the interviewer keeps trying to talk about the race issue and John doesn't wanna go there... very interesting.
wow - terrible questions at least at first - not thought provoking enough to draw coltrane out...
Most _actually Mr.F.K. was afforded the opportunity of …an TransInner response to the??? That Intellectually existed since 1920’-19.. Now.
The interviewer is annoying.
Ye __missed IT. & Mr. K. did as Humbly as ENGLISH 🇺🇸speaker could allow assimilate.
What's the point of this interview. He can barely speak. He's talking but literally saying nothing.
tha' is the worst interview to an artist like Coltrane.
2 bad he ruined his health prematurely !
Poor quality water, inadequate dental care and nutrition were the beginnings of his health problems. These were compounded by his musician's schedule and drug abuse, especially tobacco products. No one even considered these aspects back then. So many poor people who didn't use illegal drugs died early because they were denied good health in childhood and then had to work themselves to death for meager salaries.
@@Simon.the.Likeable damn dude you nailed it
John Coltrane was talking. Kids needed to stfu.
