Hi Guys I’ve just caught up with this video. I have ordered a copy apart from being a big Todd fan but to show my daughter (17) the art of being persistent and how if you keep working hard submitting your work building your portfolio things will happen .Love the page on the rejection letters and the volume of work Todd posted out . Awesome how you discussed each page and added more content to the story. Keep up the great work
Just rewatched the spiderman/xforce issues vid yesterday. This book gets shown off in that and how lucky to see this vid waiting for me today! Keep up the great work guys!
When Todd was on, he was *ON*. Back in the 90's I couldnt imagine anything better. But I was a kid and I grew up. He's still a great artist... He's had some rough moments though.
Cool vid once again, but Michael Jai White definitely knows how to throw a punch! Love seeing a martial artist who's also a charismatic actor. Highly recommend "Blood & Bone" (Kimbo Slice has a brief appearance in it), "Undisputed 2" and of course "Black Dynamite" is a good time
Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, with the McFarlane Studios animation, is pretty intense. The original book was about a group of misfit Catholic school kids who were fans of EC-style comics. The movie made them fans of more contemporary comics ( I remember one of the kids entranced by a Nestor Redondo Swamp Thing). Oppressed and bullied, they construct a fantasy world where they design their own superheroes (some are the lame sort of characters a young fan might come up with) and their made-up story/fantasy appears as animated sequences by Todd and friends. There are counterparts to their real-world antagonists that appear as super-villains, such as the nun portrayed by Jody Foster. The segment where the weirdest of them points out the work of William Blake as being a comics pioneer really spoke to me when I saw it. It gets really dark, but is definitely a worthwhile film, in my view.
56:15- that is some Stalin-level stuff - Hank Kanalz, lawyer-up, buddy! In all seriousness though: I've worked on nonfiction books, and this sort of thing is not okay by any editorial standard. Whilce's photo could have (easily) been inserted separately, with a small caption box explaining his absence in the group photo. Also, being a Cartoonist Kayfabe fan, I'm fairly certain that Hank designed the Image Comics logo - the iconic "I" - something still in use to this day on every single Image Comic cover. This is not an insignificant contribution by any measure, and it helped define the company as much as the artists in those early years. Todd should be as much of a champion of designer rights as he is with illustrator rights. They are artists too, and I assume that Todd was okay with this revisionist history presented in his book. As a designer, I'm not cool with it.
Skating on thin ice was a free anti-drug comic in the 90s in Canada. I brought 50 home with me from school. Since gotten rid of, or I’d send you guys one.
Great review. I have this book, my only question is why in the Toys section it doesn’t give his Metal Gear figures any showcase. He did 2 awesome waves for both of the MGS games for PlayStation. And they don’t even show 1 figure?
Wanda quit/was fired as editor by McFarlane (depends who you ask) because of the way Kincaid's death was shown in the book. It is mentioned in McFarlane's 'Devil You Know' documentary (up on UA-cam)
That last drawing was a random t shirt design he did for a loot crate thing, and I got the loot crate just for the shirt so that proves he can sell anything he puts his name on haha.
I bought this book when it came out. I can't tell you the number of hours I have spent going through it and studying. Uncle Todd and Granddaddy Tim Vigil always did hyper rendering/detailing.
The animated section is for the Spawn The Animation which was a secondary series to follow on from the HBO show. Kinda like how Batman The Animated Series was followed by The New Batman Adventures. Todd released a teaser for it way back at comic con in 2005 and has just sat on it even since. Guess he just wants the marks (me included) to know he's got more content for us to lap up when his toy sales start slipping. Here's a link for it: ua-cam.com/video/Sh-HLuTae-s/v-deo.html
I'm sure somebody else already posted this but a high res scan of the Spidey 300 original cover is on Heritage, comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/todd-mcfarlane-amazing-spider-man-300-cover-original-art-marvel-1988-/a/7099-92276.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515
ASM issue #306, I always wondered how the the editors missed the fact that the guy on the cover, standing behind the fountain was missing his foot. I guess it comes down to one of the dynamics of the business and that Cartoonist Kayfabe has shone a lot of light on, and that’s the fast pace of the industry and deadlines, deadlines, deadlines.
I bought a random copy of Spider-Man that Todd had done at my local comic shop and fell in love with the art. I went back and bought all of the back issues for $1.50 each. A few weeks later they were selling for $20. I thought I was the shit. Haha
I've really had a laugh at the Spawn movie, after hearing people saying to go and get it that it is worth watching. The only thing worse than the movie was hearing Todd talking about his character. I wonder if he was doing ludes before doing that or too much Labatts.
Not only, is spawn in mk11, mcfarlin toys also is behind mk11 action figures. Some dc figures too, that must feel satisfying as f, having 1 of the "big two" scratching at ur door to produce their merch, cuz u simply outperform hasbro, mattel in all the other toy coorporations.
Ummm I know that Kimbo and Michael Jai White video. White is a legit martial artist tho. He knows a things or two about punches. If in doubt just google him 😊
Man, completely forgot abt the reckoning video game. They got R.A. Salvatore for story and McFarlane for art, but nothing of his personality comes through, looks like generic fantasy.
I was in my late teens and early 20s when the future Image creators hit the Marvel scene, and I was absolutely smitten. Rob Liefeld was mind-blowing. McFarlane the same. Not sure how long it took for me to figure out that I wasn't really enjoying ANY of their stuff once they had full creative control (Spider-Man #1 and that first McFarlane-written arc definitely was my "Phantom Menace" moment, as Ed alludes to in the video...). 30 years later, looking back, I honestly wonder what exactly I admired about it all.
First thing in the morning and I see this video posted. Yes! Part of a complete breakfast!

I could listen to Ed do a whole episode as Todd McFarlane. Hilarious!

16:04 love the backwards left handed checkmarks

Swollen Members was a great underground rap group. I'm unsure but have an inkling they were Canadian.
You are correct!
Todd is the Lorne Micheals of comics - if you're in the game, you have a Todd impression, bud.

Swollen Members. Early 2000s hip hop band from Canada.
50:27 The first ever honest-to-Gawd Todd McFarlane impersonation! Someone call Godfrey the Comedian!

Enjoyed the book. Had an awesome interview/chat w/Todd for two hours about his career. Still waiting on Image United to finish, Todd! Ha ha ha.

Pretty sure Michael Jai White is an accomplished martial artist.
Todd's records are an analog version of email.
I just subscribe and hit that like button because of this video! You guys know your comics! Fantastic guys !

Great episode!
Spawn Issue #8 would love to know your thoughts...Another great vid thanks for what you do.

Wild that even one of the biggest artists of the past 30 years still had to start out filling his own invoices at 60 bucks per page.
I was a huge Spawn fan, and a fan of Todd in general, so thanks for causing me to spend money on this TPB guys. LOL

Man not gonna lie a image start formation movie would be pretty cool to see haha
ty for this
Ed, Swollen Members, 90's hip hop from Todd's backyard Vancouver, BC...
i love that Ed admits to the shit we all do, which is completely mispronounce words we never heard of in our heads like PalAydin
Fellas i just picked up those batman year 2 books. I so wish I had triples but I fought for these 🤣 such beautiful work
If Jim had been pointing out all the full moons this video would be 3 hours
Wait. How DO you pronounce Quasar?
I've really had a laugh at the Spawn movie, after hearing people saying to go and get it that it is worth watching. The only thing worse than the movie was hearing Todd talking about his character. I wonder if he was doing ludes before doing that or too much Labatts.
Ed... Zero Zero WAS the Fantagraphics anthology 🙃. It all blurs together.

Erik Larsen could be played by Woody Harrelson
If you watch "The Devil You Know" Mcfarlane Documentary, his wife says after issue 5 she left as editor....McFarlane claims he fired her lol
I finally knocked this book off a few months ago
The companies just don't appreciate anything until it's gone.
That Photoshop!!!!!!!!!!!!

You ssid it by accident make a 3d Spawn show HBO
Am I the only leftie in the world that doesn’t draw check marks backwards?
Fan boys!
This computer coloring full of gradients and effects is really terrible. It ruins drawings completely.
Enough with the McFarlane propaganda already.
