I just watched this for the first time a few days ago and it was amazing. The pace is incredible for a movie that's mostly a man wondering up and down a single dirt town road.

I need to rewatch this movie now. It's been so long I had forgotten about it. But what I haven't forgotten is, and I could be wrong, but it seems when ever Spencer Tracy is in a movie the opening scene is 10 minutes of Spencer Tracey entering town.
Hey! I live on the other side of that mountain in the background (Mt. Whitney). I definitely need to see this film now. I normally avoid westerns, but I love film noir.
I wasn't familiar with this film, but it reminded me of the plot of a 1984 episode of the detective show "Remington Steele" (2.17). Pierce Brosnan's character directly references Bad Day at Black Rock after similar events happen in a small town with a secret. The show's episode plots often call back directly or indirectly to classic films. Great fun.
(3:32) You can see little black hole that briefly appears in the corner that they used to show the end of the movie reels in the theater. I guess they were called "cigarette burns". :)
I wonder if Stanley Kubrick assigned Sydney Pollack in Eyes WIde Shut to double-knock on the pool table based on Spencer Tracy's double-knock on the Hotel counter at 35:43 in the movie.
A superb movie with all the hallmarks of subtle greatness oozing out. Tracey was a legend and of that, there is no doubt. But ably supported by Ernest Borgnine who would get an Oscar one year later for his part in Marty. There was also Robert Ryan and Lee Marvin to give it plenty of clout. The fight scene, one of the best and superbly acted - Borgnine showing plenty of authenticity, skill, in the way he took the beating. The director John Sturgess would be immortalized in the early sixties for his orchestration of the 'Magnificent Seven.'
What's your minimum number of shipping containers for a shipment of Hiptang to Diego Garcia during Hurricane season, and are undocumented diamonds OK for payment?
As soon as you mentioned Macready having use of only one arm with the bit showing him getting into the car, I remembered that I watched this film ages ago. It's a brilliant film. Also, while watching it, it made me think that this sort of sociopath bull shit and selfishness is where modern day America started getting corrupt. It's so manipulative and spiteful what the character of Smith does in the film. It bogs everybody down too.
Tracy and Borgnine are great in this but Ryan is off the charts. Anyone playing a sociopath, ruthless businessman, or shady politician needs to watch and take notes.
I have watched this movie many times. I love it for Spencer Tracey, but more for the slow paced drama that unfolds. No Bruce Willis could pull this off.
Spencer Tracy was a brilliant actor and in this film shows off his acting kills by his forceful and determined characterisation of a middle aged, ex - serviceman, on a mission to find the father of a dead soldier but instead uncovers a web of lies and ugly truths. However, I agree with another contributor who observed that Tracy was too old to play the part of a returning soldier. Indeed, casting Robert Ryan as the ex serviceman would have been a better choice with Lee Marvin playing the ring leader ‘Smith.’
It was a great film, but I can't help but feel that Tracy was miscast. He's supposed to be a veteran just back from World War Two, which had only just ended, but Tracy was 55 when the film was made. I think the story was written with a younger actor in mind, and that comes across even in just the few clips you showed: they repeatedly call him "boy", but he's older than any of them.
Maybe he was a higher up? Like a General? I haven’t seen the movie so it’s probably explained he is a normal soldier but if it’s left vague that’s a possible answer.
@@croisaor2308 I don't remember if the film ever says exactly what rank he was, but he was not a general or other high-ranking officer. Again, it's not just that they call him boy. There are other points that make it clear that he's supposed to be much younger than Spencer Tracy was at the time.
and I was deadset on igniting aersolized hiptang using a mixture of one part water to eighty part hiptang in order to enchant brass for my local band of otters in front of an audience of cats and unsupervised children. Thanks for setting me straight!
The reason another film, even remotely as good as this, will never be made again, is because those dudes actually had character and backbone. Something this generation would even struggle to spell, let alone achieve!
They brought out the welcome wagon. Search along with the stranger for the mysterious Komoko. What secrets await in this off the beaten path township? Follow along to find out but be prepared for bone chilling events. Its bound to be a bumpy ride.
One day I'll get all these Hiptang bits ripped and use them as odd clips for mixes... just telling you now while your in the closet, seems like you'd be more understanding from that angle and perspective... Hope Tom's hands weren't too clammy...
Dude, I saw it for the first time about 3 weeks ago, and I’m in my late 40s. So don’t feel too bad. It’s superb, btw. A real slow burner. Give it a watch.
A great movie. And sadly shows the ravages of alcoholism on Tracy. Compare this with the vital Tracy of 15 years before in Northwest Passage. He looks like he aged 25 years, not 15. Tracy's first picture was Up the River for John Ford. That was Bogart's first picture too.
The fight scene is an inspiration because it does everything you expect it to. The big-headed muscle freak gets licked fair and square with the minimum of fuss. When you watch it you feel a sense of old-fashioned normality - Like, there s a GOD and he's on your side.
I just watched this for the first time a few days ago and it was amazing. The pace is incredible for a movie that's mostly a man wondering up and down a single dirt town road.
Cracking movie featuring some of greatest performances on film ever. Classic that sadly rarely gets mentioned today.

I saw this movie many years ago. It's really good and well worth a watch. Thanks for refreshing my memory!
This is the first I've seen of this years round of recommendations, spectacular mustache! Anyway I've seen this movie already, it's awesome.
....is that a real "stach"..I thought it was fake..
I hope you got out of Prince Andrew’s party in one piece.
Or, in a one piece.
He'll be fine, he looks over 14
Love the film - the quality of the light too, amazing

Thank you for showcasing little gems like these! Can’t wait for tomorrow! 🙂
I love this series. Little bite sized morsels of interest.
Low-key Yojimbo in a western town in the ‘40s. I’ll check it out. Nice closet.
Is he hiding from a now sentient lava lamp?
Patrick Mike that’d make for a good horror thriller.
He wants his payment for all these years of work.
The lava lamp's broken free of its jar and has began growing and eating everything in the town =P
I decided to watch this on your recommendation. It's a very subtle and well paced film, like a well wrapped present for Christmas. Thanks!
Hey! I live on the other side of that mountain in the background (Mt. Whitney). I definitely need to see this film now. I normally avoid westerns, but I love film noir.
I haven't even seen this film but I love the blocking and framing of the actors in the wide shots.
Wonderful Movie and yes in more ways than one ahead of its time.
“High Waist Drifter”
Momentary confusion there when monetisation meant that Jake Gyllenall appeared in what I assumed would turn out be a Hiptang ad.

I had a feeling Bad Day At Black Rock was going to be the choice. Good film. Good choice.

@@handsomebrick "Little things hitting each other. THAT'S WHAT I LIKE!" is a direct quote from the movie.

Robert Ryan was a fantastic actor who in real life was the complete opposite of the sociopathic, broken characters he was usually asked to play.
Tracy and Borgnine are great in this but Ryan is off the charts. Anyone playing a sociopath, ruthless businessman, or shady politician needs to watch and take notes.
Ryan's star fell as he aged. Look at The Professionals, where Lee Marvin is now the boss and Ryan is a supporting character.
I have watched this movie many times. I love it for Spencer Tracey, but more for the slow paced drama that unfolds.

Red Rackham Pretty much any outsider in that area might be called boy, but I get your point.
And he looks closer to 65, which makes it worse

For such a tight little film, it has 6 Oscar winners in the cast (if you count 2 for Tracey)
Actually Walter Brennan was a 3-time Oscar winner.
