One of the best films..EVER!!! Tracy was awesome, Marvin, Ryan, Borgnine, Jaeger, Brenann, Francis..the photography..everything about this film is wonderful!!!
The way movies should be made. I saw this movie years ago and I like to revisit it every so often. This review was the best I have seen on Bad Day at Black Rock!
Lone Pine is my favorite little town. Haven't been there in many years but it was serene at the base of Mt. Whitney and a stones throw from Death Valley. The eastern Sierra's are spectacular country.
Bad Day at Black Rock is one of the great movies that explored a Dark episode in American history. The movie was great because it depended on excellent actors and scripts, not on special effects.
Hi Roberta, thanks for the kind comments, and thanks for your patience on the gun stuff! My expertise is in filmmaking, but I clearly didn't drill down enough learning the cap and ball material. Funny story, we tried to shoot me demonstrating how to load the replica - and it was an utter fiasco!
Great video. I am going to talk my wife into watching a western with me tonight (I am gradually moving her from the "modern western" like Justified to some of the classics). Thanks!
Wow, the field trip shots are spot on, well done!! Are the locations difficult to find? I intend to go to Lone Pine one day and would like to visit the Black Rock locations.
I've always assumed that it was filmed in some little dying Mojave Desert town. There's no trace of anything, not even the train tracks. I suppose now it all built for the movie. By the way, I absolutely ❤️ this film! The cast is incredible. Great story, great acting.
The film was really ahead of its time. Spencer Tracy the protagonist was a one armed veteran, well in his 50s, wearing a dark suit and no gun. No looker, and not after any romance either. The villains, guilty of murdering a Japanese immigrant who we never see was pretty bold as it was just 10 years after the war. And of course, set in modern times with cars replacing horses.
Very cool. I only today heard about this movie and have put the story together from your description and a few short UA-cam clips. I don't have cable and if I did I'm not sure if I could rent it. Thanks for doing all the research and putting this short doc together.
Great video of a great film -- Bad Day At Black Rock. I'd only have one minor bone of contention over the term Neo-Western as you defined it here, while using No Country For Old Men as an example. The story of No Country was not set in the present day -- 2007 for when it was filmed -- but in the early 1980s, during the rise of drug trafficking and drug-related violence that were beginning in that decade.
@@themodernwestern4681 I get asked what does that mean? I tell them to go watch the movie and not one person have I met that's asked this question has seen this great movie.
Your last scene with Robert Ryan and Spencer Tracy shows you what acting is all about. Both were top actors but both plying to dominate the scene. I think Spencer did, sitting on a chair, looking down, whilst Robert Ryan was standing over him and acting! How good was that?
It would be cool to visit that area if some remnants of the set were still there. As for the film, Robert Ryan did an amazing job as Reno Smith. In real life the man was a champion of civil rights and liberal causes, but he played bigoted characters with great skill.

The controlled deliberate doing of nothing that ratchets up the tension. That is a good description of this movie.
One of the best lines in cinema "Not only are you wrong, you're wrong at that top of your voice"
I used it at work to a supervisor one day, safe to say, I don't work there anymore!!!!
...and the fight that followed!
I watched bad day at Black Rock last night for the first time here in 2024. It's every bit as excellent as you say. Thanks. Subscribed
Bad Day , is one of my favorite westerns, fantastic acting
Agreed!
Thank you! I loved those shots comparing 1955 to 2020! Awesome! And the director's vision not to have any extra town's people was "spot on!"
Great job on this classic film, Kevin! Keep it up!

Excellent presentation of a jewel of a film. Thank you for your great commentary and site visit wrap up.

One of my favorite movies. This was a really cool video, love the recreation shots.

Maravilloso. Aprendí mucho, gracias, amigo.
Excellent video and comment. I love seeing the locations today and appreciate your efforts to show how important the landscape is!
It would be so cool to see these classic films on the modern theater screens of today!
Great video, love how the landscape from the new pictures you took is extremely similar to the 1955 footage, amazing how much it hasn't changed.
Excellent comparison clips, not easy to achieve. As for the movie, it is in my top 5 of all time and so is No Country for Old Men!
Good job encapsulating the film and matching the shots!
Anyone ever tell you you look reminiscent of David Lynch?
Great movie. Cool video. Especially liked the side by side video recreation -- very well done!
Good job!!!!

Magnificent Seven might be a good starter too. Or Butch Cassidy?

Good topic. Great movie. Very informative.

Well done, sir. Just subscribed.
Thank you! More to come...
Great vid 👌.
I liked your video. Thanx
Came here from FB. Suscribed,. Love me a good Neo! Keep it up.
Hi James, thanks for the words of encouragement. This was a fun one to make.
Why was the railway line pulled up ? And where did the line lead to?
nice video,
More videos, please!! Lonesome Dove 🕊
I saw BD@BR when I was a kid. I still use this as my go to saying when things don't go my way. I say "Bad day at Black Rock!"
Haha, that’s a good one!

From Australia, I can’t get or buy this film any place. Very frustrating as on U-tube, lots of reviews and commentary, but no film.
Can you do Bone Tomahawk and Wind River videos?
Wondering if Banshee would count as a neo-western. I took it as a western/gangster/heist series.
Hi Bobby, I would say yes! It definitely at least has elements. But I also see action, noir, thriller, crime, all sorts of influences.
@@themodernwestern4681 Have you seen Flesh and Bone with Dennis Quiad?
First American film to show Asian martial arts in a fight scene I believe.
Do a video on Harley Davidson and the Marlboro man
That’s actually a great idea Cody! I need to work on that.
Their acting was top notch won't deny that. But movie felt kinda dull & predictable.
I knew it was just another bull crap channel
