The reason that the processing is sooooo important is that this is what our eyes are so good at. Grass looks the same in blue morning light as in orange evening light. Whether the sun is out and bright or it's cloudy we feel quite a similar brightness, compared to the reality that it could be 1/4 the brightness. Basically our brains 'make up' much of what we see - e.g. blindspot. It's all about the processing (including cultural context!)
I don't think it really needs to compete with the pro model. It simply needs to out do the Z Fold like which I think it probably will in regards to that.
I'm pretty impressed by the Pixel Fold specs now. The leg-up IMO for the entire S23 lineup is the fact their Selfie camera has some level of AF now, which is a game-changer. So seeing the Pixel Fold equipped with that too is definitely a welcome.
One of the main things I see that will hold the Pixel Fold back for current Samsung Fold users/owners is possibly certain OneUI features that I think Samsung does better than Google. Google looks to have done a bit more than the bare minimum in terms of creating some unique additions across Android 12L and they've added to that a little in 13 but overall I think they are lacking in that area.
But for new Pixel Fold buyers with no prior Samsung Fold experience, this should be a none issue and the included Pixel Fold features should suffice for those users. I do hope though Google continues to work on Android specifically for foldables, taking advantage of the unique form factor. I suspect we will see them taking a good amount of "inspiration" from Samsung on this.
Don't forget f-stop is logarithmic so f/3.5 is much darker than f/2.4.
This is where computational photography gets so incredibly complicated. What you're saying is absolutely true, but when it's applied to a wide-angle camera and ran through a phone the end result is really hard to differentiate.
Speaking of LG! -Guess who, today, sent me "Android 13" on my Dual Screen Device from March 2020? Thank you LG!!! Hopefully Surface Duo users can hope to get Android 13 eventually! Wishing Duo owners best of luck! Or else, the Pixold Fold does look nice in term of aspect ratio and specs! - Why Microsoft, why ???
You can still take amazing photos on the Pixel 3 or 4 phones… Google OWNS photo processing.
It is hard to not come to the conclusion that the Pixel Fold will be similar to or better than the Fold5 cameras. I do not see that as an advantage to the Fold5.
So it comes down to other factors that differentiate them. For me, just buying a foldable for the larger display due to my weak eyes, then foldable-specific software is optional. Therefore the Pixel wins easily due to the design with a much more user-friendly front display. I do not game per se (chess. sudoku, bridge, and crosswords are the limit of my games), so performance is not the be-all-end-all. I do use dictation daily, so the Pixel wins that comfortably.
My first foldable that I may keep longer than a few months? Having tried the Flips and Folds, I found them to be disappointing and not for me. Hoping the Pixel does the job.
