The design was ahead of its time and it has gotten pretty much timeless. Unfortunately the E46 (and the E38 and E39) have been the pinnacle of a BMW era and everthing that came after that was the beginning of a new era. New people, new designers, new management, budget cuts, material downgrade, quality downgrade.... it took BMW a lot of years to get back on track but they still don't quite cut it yet. The simplicity and elegance packed into a single model with such a vast range of engines and specs to choose from was a dream up until 2006 when they stopped production. Sedan and touring are cheap to get these days but when you want a coupe with the 3.0 engine then good luck finding one that is in good shape and well equipped. Not talking about any M3 because that is a different animal and a good one will cost as much as two to three 3.0 coupes easy. Maintenance cost are about the same as running two to three 3.0 coupes :D
