If you are new to my channel and Fy Nyth (Welsh for "My Nest") in general, welcome! I'm Ariel. Along with my husband Clay, our dogs, and some poultry, we live in a tiny house on wheels in the mountains of western Wyoming and are working on setting into our own new little homestead. I've been living this lifestyle since 2014 and my wonderful partner has joined me more recently. What will you find if you follow the channel and watch the videos?
Real life here. I try to show the good and the bad. The ups and the downs. What works, and what doesn't. The parts I love (most of it!), and the things that suck. Not just the showroom version of a tiny house, but everyday life in a tiny house. Not just the romantic idea of "homesteading" or off grid life, but the everyday details of this lifestyle. We split wood for heat, fill the water tank from a gravity fed spring, and attempt to grow as much of our own food as possible between the weather and wildlife here. I hope to help others learn from mistakes and make life just a little easier for anyone else interested in pursuing a similar lifestyle.
We live in a somewhat harsh and cold climate, but enjoy the stunning scenery and wildlife that we are surrounded by on a daily basis. You'll also see videos of the nature and wildlife around my home. If you are interested in my photography or purchasing a photo, I'd love if you follow that over at mewe.com/join/arielcelestepho... or ArielCelestePhotography.zenfolio.com!

"And ducks are like "WATER"! I enjoyed that bit particularly, and of course it is always a joy to see Burley bring you a smaller and smaller piece of stick. Thanks for the duck update, done in such a humourous way.

I loved my ducks back in my homesteading days…mine were muscovies & this was in the opposite climate that you reside in…(Southern Nevada). But, so right you are - - - they are messy, messy critters & so much fun. Like you & Clay, we loved their eggs. This was a time I my life when I had a little side business of cake decorating…Yowza! duck eggs made a noticeable difference in my “from scratch” made cakes 👌. Your videos remain so special,to me, Ariel, because you constantly awaken such sweet memories I have of homesteading. Your harsh climate in Wyoming reminds me of my harsh climate in the southwest desert …each a challenge in their own way, but so worth it.. You are a gift to so many of us.💝

I've split wood with a 'Peetonk' (what we called a Wood Maul) and it's no easy task. Watching you swing that thing without breaking a sweat really is impressive. I am admit I am sad for the three 'drakes' that didn't make the audition; I'm certain you'll make them delicious in their 2nd go round. Burley is as usual hilarious in his antics. Thanks for sharing with us.

😢 gotta say that I adored those ducks and I’m kinda sad. However I totally understand and think it’s cool that u grow and raise ur food. I guess I don’t like to think that the meat I buy all wrapped and refrigerated in a store started out so cute. I hope there are more ducks in your future. Thanks for another great video!

We have two Peking ducks and we have one sitting duck she hangs out with the chickens she is able to fly but since she has discovered the chickens she now sleeps in the coop with them and hangs with them all day free ranging around the field. I think I caught my chicken the other day trying to quack. Ducks have a big heart they are so lovable

Hey friend, I haven’t touched base in awhile. Good to see you doing well on your new property! I’m so sorry to hear about your brother though.
Thought I’d comment on our duck water system in case it’s helpful. We use a big blue water drum with chicken nipples on the side of it. We have a trough heater inside the drum to keep it from freezing. Our ducks have been okay without dipping their heads for the winter. They’ve just used those chicken nipples and it keeps things much cleaner without so much water (and ice) everywhere. Then of course spring to fall they free range with their swimming pool filled.

We had been having a snow a little and then 50’s and it melts for a couple weeks but this week starting on Tuesday we got 18+ inches of wet heavy snow and then a few flurries through till Friday night we went out this morning (I work for the DOT) and salted and now it’s sunny again with more snow coming tomorrow. So so we had the spring of deception and now we are on third winter after this is over we should have actual spring.

Ariel, thank you for the update about the duck situation. Glad there is harmony now in the Quack compound. This conversational video was great to watch (I felt tired from the wood chopping) and great to hear (I was hopeful about duck eggs for breakfast) and smiling to watch the best dog in the world patiently wait for his stick to fly through the air. All the best to you and those you love.

I let my chickens out of the coop and into the run and I feed them in the Run fermented grain and I leave until about 9 then I turn them loose to free-range and I've never had them try to hide eggs out in the yard or anyting so they always go back in the coop

Few things tickle me enough to laugh. The short comment, “How else am I gonna get my yoga practice in”, just lit me up. I think you must have a little Tennessee Smart Alec DNA. I actually chuckled. Dominance of farm birds is a real thing. Show them you are the boss…always. My great grandma used to have a wood chopping quote. When she would get aggravated about something she could not effect, she’d say, “That makes my a-s want to chop firewood.” You have a fine work ethic. I love what you’re doing. Texas

Very interesting topic. Does it make sense to get another batch of ducklings? Has Mrs. Quack shown any sign of brooding? Do you need to be concerned with genetics?
I like the idea of a duck pond, with a small circulation pump, to keep it from freezing, if that is possible. Plus, it might be a nice place to sit around during the summer.

I know that with chicken eggs you have a dark room and hold the egg up to a light. You can see the chick developing inside. That's called candling. I Don't know if that will work with duck eggs.

Looks like southwest Wyoming? I could’ve mistaken it for western colorado.
I plan to buy land. It’ll be Wyoming or Alaska. If I’m gonna freeze I’m gonna freeze in Alaska.
I cannot help but personify my fickle human body onto animals. You see an elk trudging through snow and wonder how damn cold they are.
I got some ducks and hoped to be friends with them. They seem too old. They’ll like the pond.
We had them living with some turkey chicks. Basically pets. Emotional support farm animals with some bonus eggs 😂
Our last turkey was a sweetheart. Once she started laying she would just walk no run over to me and lay down next to me while I work on knives. She died day before thanksgiving when we took our eyes off her for a moment. Total anomaly.

I mean this in the most respectful way and am not judging. I’m just wondering if it’s difficult for you to end the lives of animals you’ve raised from babies. I sure couldn’t do it and I know that makes me a hypocrite. And I know you provide a great life for them until it’s time….but I’m just curious if it’s hard for you to do. My great grandmother would wring a chicken’s neck and not blink. Left me traumatized..ha!
