It’s so sad that so many people feel entitled to others people’s property nowadays. I’m sorry.

You’re such a sweet lady. I remember when we spoke by phone because I was having a problem with two Polish roosters. I’m so sorry this happened to you. My best friend has a ranch in West Texas. Three guys broke onto the ranch, stole equipment, tools and burnt down their barn because they couldn’t reach the cameras. Amazingly, they were caught. We are living in a world that people do not respect other people or their property. I would set up Korean ghost pepper traps. You empty a tea bag then carefully fill it with the above mentioned powder. Attach with fishing line and hang strategically. Low enough for someone to run into in the dark. They can’t see them and will run into them. It does the job. We had squatters trying to break into my parents home. The neighbors reported them running away screaming when they ran into them. It works. Also, paint your fence post tops purple. These thief’s will know what that means. Also cameras. I guarantee you they are selling them at a local flea market.

That is sad. I live in a senior community, and I have a huge garden and It's always been in the back of my mind that someone would come into my yard and help themselves. My yard isn't fenced in. I just have to trust God that he will send his garden angles to protect my food I'm growing.

I know the feeling... I had to put locks on as people stole my eggs last year.
And yesterday someone's dog got into my Chicken Coop and killed 10 of my 11 hens.
I have never been so upset in my life.

So sorry Audrey. That feeling of being violated is horrible. Sadly this is the new normal. When people are told over and over by the powers that be that they are entitled to other peoples stuff without having to work for it, buy it, feed it , nurture it, invest time and love into it. Its happening around us, chickens, ducks, goats, sheep , cattle even people’s vegetables farms. I suggest you do what most of us are doing now, cameras, protection devices amongst other things like a few protection trained dogs. The legal system is no help, police are never out in rural country areas so its up to the farmers and their community to help one another.

Thieves are everywhere. Transient populations (like mobile work crews) have a higher percentage of thieves.
Lesson Learned - what if this had occurred in a time of economic downturn when you depended on the chickens and eggs for food?

So sorry for your loss! I know that hurts your heart!
I agree with other about getting camers and trespassing signs.
I got solar cameras off of Amazon.
Also, in Georgia - possibly other states, register with the court house about the trespassing signs which covers you legally. You will get a number that you put only on the main sign.

I had chickens disappear, too. All hens. The expensive ones and colorful ones. The black ones and game hens and roosters were left.
I also had about five week old bunnies missing. The prettiest ones.
We're in a small rural subdivision and no one can see into my yard. It had to be someone who knew we had them and knew our dogs don't bite.
    It's so frustrating!
Another neighbor had a dog stolen and some chickens, too.

I’m very sorry. For this reason I changed my plans for my front edible garden and moved a fence to fence it in. I changed my plan for exterior fruit trees because while I don’t mind sharing the fruit, I’ve heard stories about the nuisance of people climbing the trees and bringing groups with ladders. My home is in a high traffic area where teens and adults come through biking and on electric bikes or golf carts so instead of my “let’s share the bounty and encourage gardening” idea, I went for “keep the front secure and the veggies and fruits near the cameras or behind fences. I’ve already had my solar lights stolen and neighbors trespass in our yard often and let their dogs come here to poop, so I assume I have to take the more secure approach. I wish I could have done my first idea but I don’t have the energy to manage people that go too far. :( thank you for sharing.

Yes, I have had eggs and hens stolen over the years when I lived out east of Snowflake, AZ. It was so disheartening. I had to put paddle locks on my coop doors, egg house doors, fence gates, and put up additional gates. All they had to do was ask and I would have given them eggs - but my hens were my babies and I kept them until they died from old age. I rehomed them when I had to move into the city and they are just as spoiled there. I'm sorry you had this experience.

I'm so sorry, Audrey. It is, unfortunately, the sad truth of a lack of integrity that people have. I hope you alerted the farmer they were harvesting for, at a minimum. At least you know, and it's a reminder to keep an eye on your little boy. Living out in the country, we forget sometimes, that there are misfits, deviats, and downright evil beings among us. I hate to even call them humans.
Again, I'm so sorry about your chickens and probably your sense of security on your own property. The Good Lord sees, and karma is a "B" that I hope the thief/thieves meet up with...over and over again!

@AudreysLittleFarm I am sad that this happened to you, especially since you make a living keeping and caring for your chickens. This is wrong! 😢😢😢 Perhaps someone had a starving family that depended on them... still wouldn't make it right but the thought of little starving bellies filled by their eggs makes it sting just a little less. It just the way I try to look at things to ease the pain. And it is painful. The time is coming when we will not have to worry about security or being without. A time is coming when we will be able to trust anyone around us because everyone will have solid values and value & respect each other. No one will ever make us feel insecure or afraid again. (Micah 4:1-4) I am eagerly awaiting the fulfillment of this promise. ❤ And I hope it comforts you also. ❤
Audrey, I have been reading your emails for a while and although I don't have chickens you make it sound like fun. And I loved seeing how your coop is in the video above (just wish it was for a sifferent reason). You did all you could to keep your flock safe. Like putting the tin 18 inches into the ground. I had thought about that too. I wonder, have you thought about getting a rooster and letting your hens go broody. I hope I used that term right. I like to grow my plants as organically as possible, and I would prefer to have plants that are as quality as my garden plants... It just seems to me that you have put so much work into keeping healthy girls. I would think you'd have a stronger flock from hens you've fed and the chicks they've hatched, than from chicks you won't know the background of. Surely it wouldn't take much longer for your own hens to raise their own chicks? Your chicks wouldn't have to be socialized into the flock? Maybe someone has a "stud" rooster? LOL Is that even a thing? Just some thoughts... hope this can give you some comfort and a good laugh. ❤

Honey, we have THOUSANDS of folks, now here, that do NOT live by our standards. We had to get a new roof. I asked where the workers were from, and was ASSURED they were legal. Not a single one spoke or understood English. I'm not sure what language they were speaking. Legal or NOT, these men did not have, lets say, internal moral standards that we were raised with. I was sitting at my computer and something at the window caught my eye. There was one of the men, stripped in front of my window, taking a BATH using my water hose. THEN he washed his clothes, and draped them across my fence. I went out, and draped down my fence line were several sets of clothes where the others had done the same. They had ZERO shame! Didn't try to hide anything, and the house behind me had children at home. THEY DID NOT CARE! They may not have spoken or understood ENGLISH...BUT, my STANK EYE let them know, really fast that this AINT happening around here! Also, YOU NEED to be more careful- you DID have predator's- of the human kind!

What a terrible thing to walk into. Do you have any cameras monitoring your property? There are solar powered ones so you don't have to take them down and charge them all the time. If wifi is a problem there are a few that use a SIM card if you have decent cellular service. You can buy stand-alone SIM cards, might be cheaper than adding a line to your cellular account depending on what you pay. If you had one or two of these cameras, you might not be able to ID anyone if they cover a large section but at least you'd know where they got in to your property.

The farmer responsible for the crew should apologize and make it right. It amazes me, with tech where it is nowadays...that "pickers" are still needed. It's a huge impact on the entire country that there is an entire industry around bringing in illegal labor to meet farmers' and food processors and hospitality industry demands.

This is just awful to hear and I’m sorry that something happened to your hens.
I’m wondering how or why would anyone want to take chickens, they aren’t the easiest to catch. They run around and I’m sure would have been evident someone was inside the coop. It would have been messy.
I’m wondering if there is another explanation other than a coincidence that the pickers were picking on the same day the hens went missing. Otherwise it would have had to be planned out. They would have had to know you had hens and had to known you weren’t close by. It just seems to far fetched to be honest.
Just that with 12 hens they would need to put the hens in something to keep them contained well working and I’m sure there would be a lot of evidence to support this. Is it possible that the door was left open and they wandered out and away from the property? And are probably in some trees or maybe some coyotes found them? Anything is possible but someone taking that many just doesn’t sound right.
I’m sorry that something happened to your hens. Praying that the truth be revealed to you.

We live for in the country and they had a crew of guys picking the orange trees on the property which is right behind the chicken coop. They have huge sacks that they put oranges in and so it would have been very easy for one person to fill one sack with 12 chickens and quickly walk back into the orange grove where they were.
