Have you considered buying pullets versus chicks? I recently had my flock of chickens stolen and so I purchased 9 ISA Brown pullets so that we could start getting fresh eggs quickly versus waiting months for new chicks to start laying.
Starting with pullets is a great idea because you don't have to put in the work of raising chicks and you'll get eggs much quicker. We bought our pullets from a local chicken ranch called Dadinno's Egg Ranch in Clovis, California but you can also order pullets from various hatcheries and local chicken farms.
If you want to hear more about the story of my chickens that were stolen you can watch that here, • My Chickens Were Stole...

We homeschool our daughter, and through our school were able to get eggs from a Sacramento area farm with school funds. It was her biology lab. Out of 7 eggs, we got 5 chicks. Unfortunately, three were boys, and we weren’t ready to go through the butchering process, but the farm took them back and sold us a couple new ladies. We should be getting eggs in the next couple months.

Glad it was helpful! It’s a great way to start getting eggs quickly. I also got chicks and will be adding them to the coop as they get a little bigger but all of the pullets are already laying every day 😊

    Audrey,
Looks like you’re headed towards triple digits. We lost our first couple hens a couple years ago when it was 110+ for multiple days even though they live under a big beautiful oak tree with lots of shade. . Felt horrible about them going that way.
Do you have/could you do a video on best practices about caring for hens in extreme temps? I’m rebuilding our chicken run and trying to incorporate geothermal cooling (yes, I am an enginerd), but don’t want to miss the simpler processes too.

I do have a video on keeping chickens cool I will link it here - ua-cam.com/video/84L0HvNdPs8/v-deo.htmlsi=EUlCioPz6wKnkRR0 if for some reason, the link is not clickable to you. You can just search on my channel about how to keep chickens cool and the video should pop up. I also have a blog post you can check out as well!

I got pullets to add to my flock, but my original girls are mean to them. I understand there need to be a "pecking order" worked out, but just when I thought they all settled in, my pullets now have mullets...meaning my older girls have plucked the feathers from just behind the pullets' top notches Will this bullying ever stop?

I’ve heard that it’s best to keep the girls separate until they are all the same size/full grown.

The best thing to do is to wait until the pullets are similar in size to your existing chickens, when there is a big difference in size that is when they tend to get more picked on more frequently. I would recommend keeping them separate till they’re similar size, then I would also pay attention to which older chicken is the one that’s picking on the new pullets. Sometimes it ends up being just one hen and you can just separate her from the rest for a while and then integrate her back in and that should stop the problem. There is a free chicken keeping checklist in the description of every video, if you want to check that out and get onto my email list. Also, feel free to reach out if you have any more questions! 😊

@@AudreysLittleFarm thank you so much. It didn't happen when they first were introduced. It seems now that they about the same size is when it's happening. I will be happy to look at your checklist and get in your email list too. Love you videos
