I'm a children's book illustrator! It's nice to see some different styles from different types of children's books. If you want to get into illustrating children's books, I highly suggest going to the book store, taking pictures of some of the covers, and then recreating what you see. Get as many styles as you can! The more you have on your portfolio, the better!

Hi, I wanted to tell you that your videos have really helped me. I started watching them years ago when I was about 11 and just starting to be an artist. I wanted to say thank you so much for doing what you do and there's been a lot of people who look up to you and now I've become a pretty good artist and it's all thanks to your videos giving an easy very in depth tutorial on how to do things. So thank you so much!! Really you were a large inspiration and have gotten me very far today, where I'm actually at the point of selling my prints. I'll be turning 16 this year so 4-5 years of learning from you (and others, but you started me off). Thank you.

I really love seeing this art style being implemented for children books. Coloring with color pencils brings out a sense of warmth to the illustration~
I have gone back and outlined stuff after coloring like Mark Crilley did. It really makes the picture pop!

When I got back into art during the pandemic, I started with water colors, then went to acrylics, pencil, pen and finally colored pencil. This is my medium. I enjoy the other mediums but colored pencils are the best. Added bonus is there is no mess.

If you want a smoother finish with the blending, use paint thinner or baby oil on a small paint brush, which will fill in the grainy areas.

I came here after hearing Raymond Briggs died today, and so many reviews discussed his books and stories, but none bothered to mention his technique, which interested me.
He apparently worked in a number of media including coloured pencils, inks, watercolours and simple pencils, often mixing them.
As it happens, Father Christmas was done in watercolours, but probably his most famous work, The Snowman, was all coloured pencils, although I don't think he used black outlines, but instead simply darker colours. I also read something about him photocopying the pencils before colouring, somehow so they could be eliminated, (traced?) but I don't know much more.
Anyhow, fantastic video, very helpful, beautifully worked, and here's to celebrating the life of a wonderful artist, Raymond Briggs, R.I.P.

It's awesome to see someone tackling a coloured pencil illustration instruction. I really enjoyed watching it. I think the spout is in the wrong spot though, it should line up with the handle more.
I think coloured pencils as a medium for picture books is quite charming, but hardly anyone is doing it now, it's mostly digital or some other mediums. In the UK Judith Kerr was a champion of it too, although some of it could be a mixture of watercolours and coloured pencils. I think the same can be said about Shirley Hughs's wonderful picture book illustrations.

I use colored pencils in a very limited form on my drawings to highlight certain features. I find that shading with graphite pencils then going over it with a colored pencil creates an interesting look.
PS: on the topic of colored pencil being self taught. My dad took classes in high school and was drawing photo realistic cars using only colored pencil.

I am a big fan of lines, and inking. I DO in fact treat the line at the most important part (for better or worse).
I stumbled upon coloured pencils as a way to provide myself with great control over colour without doing it digitally. However, I discovered that there is one thing people will not tell you: the difference between wax based and oil based pencils. There is a BIG difference. Could you do a video on wax based vs oil based pencils?

Hey thanks, I like your explanation on colored pencils... I to build colors then black line. If I pencil draw then outline in black - it becomes a smudge fest. Born with the ability to draw what I see, make up in my head then apply to paper or walls. I like your explanation's, illustrating and will be checking out your books and videos ... . again thank you!

Mark. I would very much like to see you try other styles of drawing outside of realism and manga.

I love the art style Mark! I have been working on my own children's stories and i found this video helpful as I work with colored pencils and I don't consider myself the greatest artist as I have no formal training but am trying my best at it and hope to learn as I go! But I always find your videos helpful and hope you do do more videos like this one in the future! Thanks for all your hard work and again for all the great video lessons! :)
