Benfica 2012/13. Lost the League lead they had for months to Porto, with a 92' goal by Kelvin, that saw Jorge Jesus kneel in front of 50.000 Porto fans, Lost the Europa League final against Chelsea 4 days later, lost the actual league title in the last match day 4 days later, and the Portuguese cup final against Guimarães a week later.

As a Porto fan, that was the greatest collapse in my life :D My Benfica-fan friend to this day despises Jorge Jesus from dropping on his knees. Worse off, he went to watch the Europa League final in person. Never has he gone from such a high to such a low

It was worse for Ballack. he went on to star in the World cup in the summer scoring the winner in the semifinal as Germany reached the final of the world cup. However he was given a second yellow card in the semi final and missed the final. In total he missed out on the treble AND the world cup all in one season. AND he wears the number 13 shirt!!!

I was too young at that time, so I cannot tell how it felt, but being a Leverkusen supporter is not always easy. Nobody knows what would have happened if they had won three titles in 2002, but the chances of winning any trophy today are relatively low. Germany is dominated by Munich for years now and I honestly don't see that changing in a foreseeable time. So, finishing second or third in the league and making it to the national cup final is basically the best we as Leverkusen supporters could hope for, which is definitely not the same as seeing your team winning a title

River Plate 1976. Libertadores -Campeonato Metropolitano - Torneo Nacional
Cruzeiro 2009. Libertadores - Campeonato Mineiro and at the Brasileirão finished 4th with 4 point less of Flamengo the champion, wining only 1 match of the last seven and loosing by one or two points the qualification to the south-american competitions so I think is worst. At the south american championship loosed the final in their stadium 1-2 with they scoring the first goal.

      1. Liverpool and Arsenal arent rivals
      2. It was not a two goals in added time comeback
      3. It wasn't even a tight game
P.s. I'm not saying that the 89 Arsenal win wasn't better because it was, but by no means were the the two situations similar. They were very different.

    • @uglyunicorn5622
      @uglyunicorn5622 6 років тому +10

Sanchez Bashir Benfica wad ahead in the league (4 points I guess) and the team was hyped since it looked like they were going to win (including the fact that they were in the finals for the Portuguese Cup and Europa League). But after drawing against Estoril at home and losing to Porto, they lost the league. And it got worst since they lost the UEL to Chelsea and the Cup to Guimarães).
TLDR: Something similar to Leverkusen but with some notches down in comparison.

I think Ajax's collapse in 2015-16 was the biggest collapse in the modern day of football. The Amsterdamers needed a win against confirmed relegation playoffs side De Graafschap to win the title, while PSV travelled to PEC Zwolle, who were in need of a win to qualify for the Europa League playoffs. It goes without saying that the Eindhoven club had a much more difficult match. PSV won 3-1, while Ajax shockingly drew 1-1, despite having the lead by halftime. De Graafschap ended up losing in the relegation/promotion playoffs, thus going down to the Eerste Divisie, but can forever hold in their memories that unlikely result against the almighty Ajax Amsterdam, bribing the Eredivisie trophy to PSV Eindhoven.

Bulgaria 2012-2013 season - Levski Sofia. A last minute win in the direct game vs Ludogorets put Levski in the lead with 2 points clear and a home game vs. Slavia Sofia remaining while Ludogorets had an away game against Montana (average team playing for nothing). Ludogorets won 3-0 while Levski needed just to score another win and claim the title. The final score was a 1-1 with an own goal equalizing the score and the title went to Ludogorets. Still hurts to this day and Levski Sofia hasn't won any silverware since 2009.

I think you should do a video about teams that were unable to fulfill their true potential, due to wars, disasters or bans. Everton were champions at the start of BOTH World Wars, and also at the start of the 5-year European ban on English clubs competing in Europe. Then there's the superb Man Utd and Torino teams who were killed in plane crashes. There must be more examples.

My team, PSV Eindhoven, snatched the title away from favourites Ajax on the final day of the 2015-16 Eredivisie, because Ajax miraculously drew 1-1 at second-to-last-placed De Graafschap. I cannot even begin to describe how amazing that felt. The 2016 win wasn't half as crazy as the 2007 one though, when PSV came from 3rd place on the final matchday to edge leaders AZ and Ajax on goal difference after beating Vitesse 5-1.

Hearts 1985-86. Leading for most of the season they only had to avoid defeat at Dundee on the last day to win their first title since 1960. They conceded two goals in the last 7 minutes and when Celtic won 5-0 they clinched the title on goals difference. To make things worse Aberdeen beat them 3-0 a week later in the Scottish Cup final. Heartbreaking stuff.

Arsenal 89. Why the hell isnt that in this list. That was way way more dramatic. Actually snatching the title from the league leaders on the final day of the season in goal difference will never be beaten. Man City played a bottom table team. They should of won the game quite easily. Arsenal were playing one of the best sides in Europe and won. Not only by the exact amount needed but in the last seconds and away from home. Cumon now.

I was so young and wasn't even into sports, but I'll never let go of Arsenal's title collapse in 07-08. We really should've won the league that season, and we would've had Eduardo not been injured. We also most likely never would've lost Fabregas, Adebayor, and Van Persie. Winning the league that season would've made a statement that kids really can win. Arsenal that season were pretty reminiscent of AS Monaco in the 16-17 season (good thing Monaco won their league title).

Even as a devote Dortmund fan I've got to admit that Schalke should be on this list, for what happened at the end of the 2000/2001 Bundesliga season was simply unreal.
Schalke have never ever been champions since the highest tier of German professional football is called Bundesliga (1963/64 season).
34 games in total, Schalke lead Bayern Munich after 32 games of the 2000/2001 season on better goal difference. Schalke then lost 1-0 to Stuttgart and Bayern wins 2-1 over Kaiserslautern after Alexander Zickler scored in injury time. So before the last game of the season, Bayern leads by 3 points but Schalke has the better goal difference.
For the last game of the season, Schalke faced Unterhaching at home, ironically the last game ever to be played at the old "Parkstadion" in Schalke (now it's Veltins Arena). Bayern faced Hamburg at the same time.
Schalke trail behind 0-2, then manage to equalize before Unterhaching take the lead again with only 20 minutes left on the clock. Schalke somehow manages to come back, winning 5-3. Simultaniously, Hamburg's Sergej Barbarez, that season's league top scorer, scores for Hamburg in the 90th minute, making the score 1-0 for Hamburg with no official time left on the clock. After hearing that, the Schalke fans go mental and storm the pitch, celebrating, people crying of joy etc. unaware of the fact that game in Hamburg was not ever yet. In the 94th minute, a Hamburg player seemingly plays the ball back to the Hamburg keeper, who ironically was on loan from Schalke, who then took the ball ball with his hands, which is technically illegal, so the referee awards an indirect free kick for Bayern Munich inside Hamburgs penalty area. Stefan Effenberg touches the ball and Patrick Andersson scores his first and only goal for Bayern Munich, making the score 1-1 and giving Bayern the point they need to win the Bundesliga over Schalke by one point.
As you can tell, the Schalke fans were not amused...^^
You can look it up on UA-cam, just search for "Meister der Herzen Schalke" and you'll find enough footage of that infamous season finale.

Brighton 16/17 season. As a Brighton supporter I can vouch for the the disappointment felt by all who support the Albion. Promoted to the Premier League with 3 games left of the season to win the Championship title, but a 93’ minute equaliser from Aston Villa on the final game of the season denied us the title and gave it to Newcastle. That has to be one of the biggest promotion cock-ups along side United loosing it to City.

Losing out on a treble? It's not just Leverkusen, ask the 2012/13 Benfica team. Lost to Porto 2-3 on the penultimate matchday in the last minute to put their destiny out of their hands. Lost to Chelsea in the EL final in the last minute, 1-2. To top it all off, they couldn't find a consolation in the Portuguese Cup, losing to Vitoria Guimaraes. Now that's sad.

Disagree re. Liverpool's 2013/14 campaign being a title collapse. Arsenal started the season great then faded, it wasn't until February that LFC got any momentum and had people talking about their title prospects. They needed a bunch of other results to go their way (like Sunderland beating Chelsea) and they had to win their last 14 games in a row to secure the title (from memory it was 14) and this was something only done once before in league history. They had a great team up front but leaky defence (quite a few games they'd concede 2 or 3 goals and win) and BR was tactically naive as a manager. They never looked like getting on top of Chelsea in the match at Anfield, regardless of whether Gerrard stayed on his feet or not. That game and the Palace game only highlighted their tactical/ defensive weaknesses as a squad. If Klopp had been in charge they might have got the extra 3 points in the season that would've placed them above City in the final standings...

AZ Alkmaar in 2006-2007 season. They were top of the league on the final day of the season ahead of Ajax in 2nd and PSV in 3rd, all 3 teams on the same points and separated on goal difference. AZ were on their way to breaking the dominance of the "Big 3" of Dutch football till they suffered a shock defeat at relegation threatened Excelsior in the final game, playing with 10 men after 15 minutes in the game. Ajax won 0-2 at Willem II, and PSV beat Vitesse 5-1 so PSV and Ajax both finished on 75 points, but PSV become champions due to a better goal difference by just 1 goal (+50 for PSV, +49 for Ajax) to end one of the most exciting and closest title races in many years.
Understandably AZ were average and still in mourning the following season but finally did win the title in 2009 with LVG as manager
