I have a PhD and worked as a postdoctoral fellow and watching your PhD diaries I am very much struck that you seem to spend a lot of time planning, sub-planning, sub-sub planning and doing side research projects but not actually doing the research on the question you have in front of you or writing your thesis. I'll be honest sometimes I watch and am literally telling the screen for you to get your research sorted and just write!! Yes you need to create your own structure when doing your PhD and man it is hard... but you also need to suck it up and get drafts to your supervisors to critique or else you will never do it. Your drafts may be terrible in your eyes but it will give you direction and an idea what you need to tighten up

Everyone’s PhD journey is different. If it was the same for everyone, you wouldn’t need to make significant and original contribution to knowledge. Instead it’d basically just be a research master’s degree.
Things change over time, people complete their work differently, and everyone has a different process.
This difference in process is something scholars learn when they interact with people going through the dissertation process outside of their own cohort.
It’s also why new professors are usually not allowed to chair committees. They have a false sense of what it means to do a PhD and they overestimate their competence (The Dunning-Kruger Effect helps to explain this beautifully).

Agreed however the fundamental nuts and bolts is a written dissertation/thesis..... if one cannot move forward to producing a thesis then any significant or original contribution is less meaningful@@lajourdanne

Think abut it like this: the ones who have PhDs and who are now being accused of plagiarism, while having high profile careers, would have benefitted from extensive planning. Kaelyn's dissertation just takes significant time to ensure she has the ideas right given the literary period and topic.

I’m relieved to hear that I’m not the only one who LABORED over her prospectus and still felt lost when starting on the dissertation 😅
loved this video as always ❤

It's actually a piece of advice that was given to me by several lecturers to not start at the beginning until you know exactly what all the points in your paper will actually be.

I've also started from the middle and worked my way through random chapters to suit my mood... it really helps to relieve some of that pressure

Do you have any instructions for how to customize this Notion template? I bought it, but the sizing and spacing is all off, I can't update the countdown timer, etc.

I have a beginners guide to Notion coming soon but you should be able to toggle the vertical bars on the page to adjust the size or drag and drop in order to create a custom line or side by side option

Hi, thank you for yet another fun video! I really like the template and it seems super helpful and organised.
I had a question (that might take an entire video to address, which I would thoroughly enjoy): I was wondering how do you manage to avoid burnout? I tend to work all the time and normally I do not mind, but not having taken a proper break from the PhD over the Christmas break resulted in burnout with several health implications as well. I normally really enjoy my work and the PhD requires large volumes of work - to the extent that taking a break now means soooo much more work later down the line, so I just end up kind of working most of the time. Right now, I am taking the time to relax more and to do the bare minimum, however I am trying to figure out a long-term strategy that does not involve a burnout-healing cycle. Long story short, how do you manage to work at the rate that you do whilst avoiding burnout? Any insights would be welcome.
