    77 yrs ago my paternal grandad landed on the D-Days beaches. He was with the famed 51st Highland Division. My grandad sadly died 11 days, before I finished my basic training with the Royal Corps of Signals and started a 22 year career within the British Army. I finished in 2005. I miss my grandad.

    Apparently, the real reason he wore a kilt was that the military were unable to supply him with trousers specially tailored to contain his giant balls of steel.

      @Appeljuiceable When Colditz was captured by the allies, they found a fully built and operational glider hidden in the loft space of one of the buildings. The prisoners only ran out of time to attempt an airborne escape attempt.

      Meet an old bloke in Arnhem a few years ago, and he had met the umbrella soldier, Tatham Warter when he was a ten year old kid in 1944. A group of soldiers had spent the night in his house, and when his parents got up in the morning the kitchen was in a state, but there was a letter left on the table saying "sorry for the mess, the Tommy's", even under the strain of battle they apologised for what they had done to their home.

More so, my uncle got to know Tommy quite well as they both attended the same school in Edinburgh - Fettes and then joined the same regiment some years later. My uncle was awarded the Croix de Guerre. Major McPherson was awarded the same medal but on three occasions along with the Legion of Honour and the Military Cross. My grandpa was a Marine in WW2 . He fought on Guadle Canal and Okinawa where he was badly wounded having been shot multiple times in both legs by a japanese Machine Gunner while trying to move from one position to another while his unit was advancing. Decades later in the early 1990s and as a man in his 70s the V.A. Amputated his legs due to severe circulation problems due to the extensive damage to them during WW2. One was amputated above the knee and the other below the knee . And the man actually learned to walk on 2 prosthetics with the aid of a crutch at first and later with just a hand held walking cane . The WW2 generation was truly a generation unlike any before or since in my opinion. My grandpa is now just a handful of months away from being 100 years old having been born in oct 1921. He no longer walks on those prosthetic legs or even puts them on unless he is going out somewhere with one of us " kids " .... I am a 50 yr old Grandpa myself now btw. The man is as alert today as I have ever known him to be. He uses a motorized scooter and wont get caught in a wheelchair. Lives independently other than needing assistance with transportation to the market or Dr Appointments. And he has a much younger girlfriend who is about to celebrate her 80th birthday next week . The man is a Juggernaut to say the least !

They held off the Germans for 3 days without ammunition fighting street by street using their bayonets. He had some impressive scars. When we were boys he drilled us using broom handles in how to use a bayonet because he was convinced we'd have to fight another war and the British tend to use Highland troops for hopeless situations. I told him I was from Kansas City and was visiting. I didn’t know who he was so he handed me his book and started to tell his story. I told him I was going to read it on my flight back to the states. When I finished it I lamented that I didn’t spend more time with him. He was the highest decorated soldier in the UK army and lived a life of a national hero. Now, 6 years later I tell his story to everyone that will listen. Sir Tommy is a treasured memory to the MacPherson Clan. He was quite a guy! RIP

A “Territorial Decoration.” My father was a captain in the Royal Artillery who received the TD too and he was also Scottish. I still have that medal plus his others as well as his miniatures he wore for formal occasions after he became a civilian. It’s interesting to me that McPherson must have also started out in the “Territorials“ to receive the TD. Territorials is what the British call their National Guard.

  • @grahamlait1969
    @grahamlait1969 3 роки тому +1

    I saw Tommy MacPherson playing rugby when he was well into his seventies and met him afterwards. All right, it was just a bounce game, no hard tackles, no hard scrums, but he played the full eighty with no bother. He was a thoroughly charming elderly chap of slight stature. The legend then was that he had persuaded an entire German division to surrender while dressed in nothing but his kilt, towards the end of the war. The story went that while on a recon patrol with a platoon of soldiers he came across a German road block, so he took off all his kit except his kilt and strolled up to the roadblock, demanding to see their commanding officer to offer him the chance to surrender. Apparently he thought they'd take him to their Lieutenant or somesuch. Instead, they took him to see their General. Realising that he was now in deep kack, Tommy decided to brazen it out and told the General that if he didn't surrender immediately, the town the Germans were holed up in would be bombed to smithereens next morning and then he, Tommy, and his mates would come in and kill the lot of them. He then turned round and left town, still wearing nothing but his kilt, and was allowed to return to his platoon unmolested. Apparently Tommy and his platoon were amazed when a few hours later an entire German division, complete with all their equipment, came marching out of town, up the road, led by their General, who surrendered to Tommy. I never found out if Tommy had got dressed again in the meantime, but I suspect he would have done. Of course, how much of this story is actually true is debatable and it wasn't the sort of thing you'd have asked Tommy about on first acquaintance anyway, but I must admit, I liked the thought of an entire German division surrendering to some wee bloke dressed in a kilt... and nothing else.
