You could try putting the chips in foil, prick the foil with a fork and then put the foil packet on the metal grid. That's basically how my hot smoker works.

Have a couple of tips,wait till the briquettes are white all over and try the soaked chips in the moat with a cup of water.
How long do you soak the wood chips?
