Wow! She is brilliant. I hope one day she realizes that. (I wish everything she said wasn't so apologetic, self-deprecating, and fueled by unwarranted self-criticism, because she deserves none of that!)
Thanks so much for this! We had a piano in the house where I grew up that had been a player piano but was gutted and made into a regular piano in the 1930s.
If you want to hear some really interesting mechanical music on the piano visit a collector of Reproducing player pianos such as the AMPICO DUO ART or the Welte Mignon player pianos that re enact the artists expression, these instruments have their own paper rolls with the expression perforations on the left and right hand side of the roll, these player actions were mainly manufactured in New York. Music is anything from classical to foxtrot from famous American artists such as Adam Carroll, Edgar Fairchild Erving Berlin and Col Porter, that's when music was music. Many thanks for the video. Jim from AUSTRALIA.
My family has a (pedal pumped) player piano that looks very similar to her's, our works though. We also have Scott Joplin's ragtime melody as well as many other rolls. Many fun memories of growing up and the family standing around and singing to the rolls (the lyrics are printed on the roll as it goes by.) Kind of a primitive karaoke!
She also gives a fascinating talk at the Long Now Foundation's "Interval" lounge in San Francisco: theinterval.org/salon-talks/02019/aug/20/horological-heritage-generating-bird-song-magic-and-music-through-mechanism
I don't think they were implying that it was a unique instrument. She was just showing something mechanical that she plans to fix after being asked about repairing things

Aw, that's wonderful! Nico's great!!
I've had a crush on this woman for way too long. 😅
How is a “Self-playing piano” any different to a regular Pianola?? 🤔
