  • 2.19.23 | by Adam | MANHATTAN - A pedestrian was critically struck by a car. It happened at 3:35 am Sunday southbound on the FDR before 23rd St. The car stayed on the scene. A large truck initially protected them from traffic. The windshield had a hole in it. Upon arrival of first responders they found the victim on top of the car with his feet on the roof and the rest of the body and head facing the rear of the car. FDNY and EMS rushed him to hospital unconscious with no CPR performed. The driver and his girlfriend appeared to be in distress, crying, and the driver also seemed to be concerned with the damage that was done to his car. Traffic was initially shut down and one lane was freed up eventually.

Why would you say that "the driver also seemed to be concerned with the damage that was done to his car" in a tone that suggests he cares more about his car than the person that was hit? Are you kidding me? In this day and age with insurance companies I would have done exactly the same thing. He also waited to take his pictures until the very end of the incident. These two individuals were obviously in shock. I think that is an extremely unfair statement.

You're reading wayyyyyyyy too much into that statement. Reread the tone of the entire description--it goes frame by frame. It's merely an observation not to evoke judgment. Try to approach things objectively--not everyone is out to cause offense! It's beyond obvious that the driver was way more concerned about the pedestrian than his car.

It was a good call out. More interested in checking the damage taking pictures before the guy even left.

That's what he observed so that's what he reported. Don't fault the messenger for the message.

Really good video, Adam! You really captured it all here, and that’s why I consider you one of the best stringers out there. Keep up the hard work! It’s extremely impressive.

The traffic passing the first responders shows that most New Yorkers being self centered.

I can't believe that traffic isn't stopped! Some of those cars are going by pretty fast.

I feel bad for the driver and passenger. I don’t feel sorry for the prick New York drivers that are inconvenienced. If I was those firemen walking holding those drivers back, I’d walk until my feet gave out, just so they couldn’t get by. WTF

I mentioned above that I knew somebody who was killed while walking on the freeway. He had had mental health and drug problems for a while.

Maybe the gentleman couldn’t sleep and decided to take a walk on the southbound FDR to clear his head

Hope the guy is okay. The pedestrian shouldn't have been on the FDR unless he wanted to get hit.

Wow! Aren’t we a judgmental group. I pray the person hit comes out ok. I also pray for the couple that hit the person. They probably will have their own type of trauma to get through. Accidents happen. New Yorkers are passing by because the flow of traffic needs to move as much as possible. Maybe there is somebody in that traffic that needs to desperately get somewhere quickly. I saw a cute couple. I loved how concerned he was about his girl. Don’t forget there is a lot of shock going on as well. We are to swift to judge!!

This made me sad because some people that walk on the highways should know that cars on highways are driving at slow speeds at 60-65 mph that’s fast enough to fly pass someone but knowing how some people drive in huge cities with millions of people some people speed which is crazy.

My best friend's little brother was killed while walking on I-95 in Providence RI a few years ago. He had had mental health and drug problems for years but was still a good "kid" (around 50 years old when he died). I thought of him when I saw that man in t he video.

Even in a situation so dire....the phone addiction kicks in! Incredibly disrespectful and pathetic. Treatment centres for the addiction will be necessary in the future.

This is simply stellar footage! Im a NYer living in the UK right now and oh, how I love me some good NYC chaos! I hope that pedestrian fully recovers. He looked alert on the gurney. And the driver and his gf looked so upset. Time heals but they will definitely drive differently regardless of how the accident happened.

You love some good NY chaos sounds inappropriate here... We're dealing with deaths, sufferance, disabilities, etc...If it were yourself or someone from your family, how about strangers expressing their enjoying on some good NY chaos??!
