300 Bird Challenge Peterborough Or Bust

- We want to see 300 different bird species before the end of 2024. In this video, we chase down a couple of rare birds, take a look at the world's fastest animal - the Peregrine Falcon, before taking a trip to Peterborough.
Unfortunately, we don't have much luck in this video. But birding is at a bit of a lull here during February. We will be back with a more satisfying video soon!
We are going away for the weekend of Feb 10/11. We anticipate the next video being released around Feb 21st-22nd. See you then!

That's birding for you -- it's feast or famine sometimes, and this time of year it can too often be famine. That peregrine falcon had just had a big meal -- look how full its crop is.
Yep, lookong forward to April-ish, for sure.
Good spot on the crop. Must have just missed that. Unlike the pigeon, or whatever 😂

I enjoyed this video as much as any of your other videos... I think this reflects what real winter birding can be like, and so don't feel bad at all. the bird you show repeatedly diving, while talking about grebes, is a Bufflehead drake
Quite possible that I ended up using the wrong clip, oh well.
That’s not a Bufflehead. Horned Grebe!
Congratulations, I see you passed 1000 subscribers! Its great to see birding videos from a fellow Toronto resident. I do have one question: I notice you don't tend to go to Tommy Thompson park.. Just curious why, as isn't it supposed one of the best birding spots in the city?
Thanks Naomi, we really appreciate all the support from everyone. TTP is probably the spot in Toronto with the widest number of species through a given year - but it's quite a slog to get through the whole place. That's perhaps why we lean more towards going to Colonel Samuel Smith Park more frequently. It's a bit more compact. Having said that, our last video from TTP was in November, and I'd expect us to be back at TTP again as Spring arrives, if not sooner
Awesome Falcon footage and information about him, he is quite documented that bird.
I have never had good luck finding any wildlife in Peterborough either Lindsay and surrounding areas yes but never Peterborough.
You guys need to visit Nawautin Nature Sanctuary just East of Cobourg any time of year is usually good sightings.

You get both of these Grebes over there, but they are not super common and they have different names in The UK.
Eared Grebe is called a Black-necked Grebe (its neck is mostly black compared to the Horned Grebe, especially in breeding plumage).
Horned Grebe is called a Slavonian Grebe. No idea why it has that name lol...
I'd love to see more of the background on your process. Do you use eBird's target bird feature and needs alerts emails to help search out new birding opportunities?

I'll see about including some of that information in a future video.
Mostly though, yes you're right, eBird email alerts help us choose what to do. But also Ontario specific Facebook groups and chat rooms can help. Sometimes I might be lucky enough to get a tip either in-person or online. Sometimes it's just our own experience of which general places have worked in previous years during different seasons.
Hi love your videos I have what i think is a hawk that comes to visit my chickens and tries to take them out to lunch It has a grey back and a white front i tried to find it on the internet but no luck I got some footage of it and put in a few of my videos "Just More Fall Stuff" and "we won the war" If you get a chance The footage is not that clear I live in Nw ontario Near Thunder Bay Anyway good luck and take care👍
Hi Ernie, thanks for the comment. You have a Cooper's Hawk watching over your chickens, there! Field markings are the black cap on the head and the tail that has black and white stripes or bands across it, especially when seen from the front. Stalking of domestic birds is a fairly common behaviour for these hawks. They'll sometimes stake-out birdfeeders in people's back yards.
It's always possible that it could be a Sharp-shinned Hawk. They look very similar and are found in the same region, but I lean towards Cooper's Hawk.
