- Achara & Steph watch Francis Ford Coppola's best adaptive film of all time, The Godfather. Based on the novel by Mario Puzo, about Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando - Apocalypse Now & Superman (1978)) who wants to hand over his mafia empire to his youngest son, Michael (Al Pacino - Dog Day Afternoon, The Irishman, Scarface (1983) & Heat).
We wanted to provide all we could by splitting our reaction into two parts.
This film is directed by Francis Ford Coppola & it also stars: James Caan (Elf, Misery, & Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs), Diane Keaton (Annie Hall, Father of the Bride & Something's Gotta Give) & Robert Duvall (The Apostle, The Judge, Jack Reacher, The Road, & Deep Impact).

Does The Godfather deserve its reputation as one of the greatest American films ever made?Personally, I would say yes.

I would say: The Godfather II is THE BEST, followed by The Godfather I.

One of, easily but you could argue #1 and many have.
Out of all the people present at Connie's wedding day, Luca Brasi is the only person who actually came to the wedding to pledge his loyalty and congratulate Don Vito.
He was also he only person who didn't ask for any favours unlike many others who had their requests.
Maybe that's the reason why Luca Brasi was referred to as "my most valued friend" by Don Vito Corleone himself.
It's also because Luca was a literal psychopath that even Don Corleone was a bit freaked out by

Luca is a dangerous man, if you go by the book.
To all those person who tryna prove me wrong by saying Luka is dangerous and a psychopath, I never said anything about Luka "not being dangerous".
And for the people who tryna give me the bookish knowledge, Luca respected and pledged his loyalty to Don Corleone in the book too.

About Michael:
The beginning of the film is just after the end of World War 2. At the wedding, Michael is wearing a WW2 US Marine Corps officer's uniform. The insignia on his shoulder epaulets show his rank is Captain, an officer commanding a Company of 160-200 men. The ribbons on the left front of his jacket are: top row left to right Silver Star (3rd highest award for combat valor with serious risk to own life), Navy and Marine Corps Medal (highest award for non-combat life saving valor with serious risk to own life), Purple Heart (for being wounded in combat), 2nd row left-most ribbon is WW2 Pacific Theater Campaign Medal with 2 Stars (indicates participating in a total of 3 Pacific Island battles).
Prior to being promoted to Captain, as a 2nd Lieutenant and then 1st Lieutenant he would have commanded a platoon of 40-50 men. He is a combat veteran who has commanded a significant number of men (40-50, later 160-200), is trained and experienced in marksmanship and tactics (attacks, defense, ambushes, maneuvering for position, etc., as well as individual combat skills), taking decisive action and clear thinking in stressful situations, been promoted through 3 officer ranks (2nd Lieutenant -> 1st Lieutenant -> Captain), shown personal bravery in both combat and dangerous non-combat situations, been wounded in combat, and seen some of the bloodiest battlefields of WW2. Most of those battles had very intense hand-to-hand combat, no just shooting, as they almost always ended with desperate Japanese soldiers making massed banzai charges. Being a Marine officer during wartime is not a union job, there are no promotions because of seniority; he was promoted twice because he had demonstrated competence at leading men and killing the enemy.
At the wedding and throughout the movie, he is almost always the most experienced, hardened killer in the room. The older mafiosi laugh at him for proposing to shot Sollozzo and the police captain, but really have no idea what his experiences are or how coldly ruthless he will be to decisively defeat/eliminate his enemies.
Be all that as it may, how much of all that did Michael actually accomplish? His father didn’t pull some strings for him to protect him?
That's the prequel I've always wanted to see - what, exactly, DID Michael do during the war?
@gv7217 Remember, the Don had politicians in his pocket and almost the entire family disapproved of Mike enlisting. If Mike insisted in his service, there was no way the Don was going to risk letting Mike suffer through everything.
@@Wired4Life2The mafias pull did not go as far as the military. Once you were in basic training you were the Army's property and nobody got preferential treatment.
However because Michael had dropped out of college to join it might have earmarked him as prime officer material but he would have got that all on his own as leading a platoon is more likely to put you in danger than shield you from it.
Michael wanted to make his own way in the world and although it hurt Vito as every father wants to protect their son I think Vito probably respected Michael the most out of all his children

That cat in the beginning wasn't planned. It was just a stray cat roaming around the studio so they grabbed him and handed him to Brando. Totally unplanned and this little character goes down in movie history in the most Iconic film ever made.
The cat was purring so loudly in the opening scene that the actors had to re-dub their lines afterwards, yes?
Crazy nobody at the studio wanted Pacino as Michael but Coppola was adamant! Thank god! Coppola gave me my all time favorite actor
Same for Brando who was considered a has been by then. There is a great story in the making of the GF where they talk about auditioning Brando for the part of Corleone at his house without calling it an audition as not to insult Brando. Brando, then in his late forties, used just a couple of props laying about and in a matter of minutes transformed into Corleone. Legend.

Luca Brasi was played by Lenny Montana a former wrestler and probably
connected with the mob. The Godfather was his first movie and he was nervous about having a scene with the famous Marlon Brando and actually spent time practicing his lines before each take. Coppola noticed this and wrote it into the script.
Also if I don't remember wrong he were a part of the reason that the mob stopped following the crew and actors because they learned about how well and respectfull they made the movie.
Yeah, he was a mob enforcer.
Johnny Fontaine/ Frank Sinatra From Here to Eternity
What most people miss is that Micheal was a WWII marine corp captain in the pacific theater. He knew how to plan missions and he knew how to kill. What he didn’t understand was that Sollozzo wasn’t the main figure in the plot to kill Vito. Killing him wouldn’t end the threat.
Fun Fact: Talia Shire who played Connie Corleone is the sister of Francis Ford Coppola who directed this iconic movie, and is the aunt of Sophia Coppola and Nicolas Cage and the mother of Jason Schwartzman.
A lot of things are clearer if you've read the book. The Godfather might threaten terrorize or even order someone killed, but he's also notoriously old fashioned about certain things. He doesn't take the deal with Sollozzo because he truly doesn't want to get involved with that kind of business despite the potential for enormous profit
I will keep saying it. Of all the new additions to the channel, Steph is the best by far; she is probably the smartest of the channel, appreciates well-acted, written, and filmed scenes, doesn’t talk over every dialogue and about unrelated topics to what they are reacting to, etc. She is so good; I missed her when she was gone, and I am glad she is back. I would love to see Achara and Steph react to Mr. Robot, Dark, The Bear, Barry, Fleabag, or Severance.

21:09 - in case you missed it, the guy who shows up at the hospital is Enzo, the young man who the Godfather arranged to marry the daughter of the baker in order to stay in the U.S.
Also, one of my favorite details is outside the hospital after Michael and Enzo have successfully scared off the men who came to kill Don Corleone, and Enzo's hands are shaking as he tries to light a cigarette but Michael notices his own hands are not shaking as he helps Enzo.
And Enzo, who simply came to personally thank Vito, stayed and supported Michael. The Corleones never forgot this and made sure Enzo had a successful career as a baker.

When there are short moments in the Italian language without subtitles, it is because it doesn’t matter to the progress of the film, exactly what they are saying - the audience has the general idea of what is going on, but it makes the audience focus more on what shows on the faces and body language of these phenomenal actors, and watch their reactions to each other, and we also can absorb the atmosphere built up in the scene through camera movements, lighting, music, sound fx, placement of the actors, etc and we get whatever information we need from all of that, without specific words. You will notice the same in Godfather Part 2.
I learned something new this time.....after the Don was shot and Tatalia is telling Tom to make the deal....Tatalia said "Sonny was hot for my deal wasn't he?" I realized that by Sonny opening his mouth at the meeting with his dad and Tatalia is what put his dad's life at risk

Luca Brasi(Lenny Montana) was muscle for the Columbo family. Joe Columbo allowed The Godfather movie to be made as long as they didn't use the words "Mob", "Mafia" or "cosa nostra". They were able to use the words in The Godfather part 2 because Joe Columbo was dead.
As close to a perfect movie that has ever been made. It's really flawless which is why it holds up even today...
Well, maybe, except for the scene where Sonny is kicking Carlo's butt out on the street. A couple of those punches that Sonny throws at Carlo missed hitting him by an obvious, considerable distance. Once that is noticed it becomes to obvious to overlook on repeat viewings. Someone in the film editing process somehow let that clip slip by.

Part 3 was never supposed to be made. It was a money grab. Francis always intended it to end as part 2 ended, With Michael alone. Al Pacino murdered the michael character in part 3 anyway. I don't know who he was playing.

Calling _The Godfather_ "one of the best films of all times" is *definitely* NOT a stretch... It's been rated for decades now and documented at IMDb as #2 best film of all times, only bested by _The Shawshank Redemption_

One of the all time greatest films ever made! I remember growing up as a kid seeing SO MANY nods to this movie in kids cartoons and never understanding them without proper context until I finally saw this movie.
Fun Facts: They didn't want Al Pacino for the role.
The horse head is a real horse head they got from a slaughter house. They didn't tell the actor to get an honest reaction.
Marlon Brando was notorious for not learning his lines. They use to put cheat cards in different areas so he could referencing them during the scene. |
It was Brando's idea to have the cat in the beginning to show the juxtaposition between the character and he kindness.
At 24:56 Steph becomes a believer and becomes a believer that this movie is one of the best movies of all time.

if there's anything that impressed me like this movie, it's the struggles the filmmakers had to face while doing it. Really recommend the recent Mini-Series "The Offer", where the making of this movie is documented. Especially the cast for Coppola and young Pacino was great.

Many reactors did not pay attention, and they were clueless about why the guy in the car was shot.
The actor playing Luca *was* nervous but it didn't help that Brando was making faces at him while he was delivering his lines ;) Brando also loaded his stretcher with bricks. Watch the ambulance bearers faces while hoisting him up ;)

Marlon Brando is the greatest actor of all time
That first scene is great, and not just because it tells you who Vito Corleone is. It tells you WHY he is. He's an immigrant and immigrants get treated poorly. So he became the government/justice system for his community. They come to him for help and in turn owe him It's one of the reasons he's so powerful, more powerful that the other mob bosses. His first scene tells you all that without having to spell it out.
This was a close to a perfect reaction. I value the commentary and they had the best expressions/ facial reactions.
My buddy and I quoted this constantly. We regularly called each other "my Kraut Mick friend!" but only one of us was even a little Irish.
This is such an American story, not just an Italian immigrant movie. It's the blend of the New World and the Old World that forged the modern nation. What is fantastic about it is that every scene is like a "slice of life" - you tend to forget that the lighting and camera are there, and that the actors are even playing a part. The effect is seamless.

This movie is my fav of all time. Actually this one and Part 2. I go back and forth. I really hope you two react to that one as well.

Regarding the hospital scene, according to the book, when the assassins saw two men standing outside the entrance acting like guards, it looked like the whole place was guarded.
Why take risks when you can call a police captain for help?
Yes Steph,Talia Shire "Connie" besides The Godfather & Rocky Series was also involved in the Filmmaking of 3 films during the 80's the most memorable for me was "Rad"(1986) Talia & her late husband Jack Schwartzman were both involved in the making of the movie,a Family,Cheesy but Good Film she also stars in the movie as well.
Its hard to argue that this is one of the best American films ( along with part II) of all time

Michael isn't fluent in Italian that's why we don't see the subtitles. The perspective of the film is shifting into his pov.
"The Offer" will answer any questions you have about this movie. And Achara and Steph, you *must* do Part II!!!!! My home city, Newark, N.J., was run by these people in the middle of the last century. (Where I'm from "The Sopranos" is a documentary :) ).

For Marlon´s Brando character in this movie, Don Vito Corleone, Francis Ford Coppola put a jaw prosthesis in his mouth and a gauze, to give him that particular face. Brando was relatively young in this film, and Coppola pretended to age him and look more threatening.
In Francis's DVD commentary (which is awesome btw), he said the jaw thing was Brando's idea. He told Coppola that he should look like a bulldog when they were doing make up tests and screwing around at Marlon's house

Okay ladies, you are CORRECT, girl on the left, that yes the actor that plays Luca Brasi was extremely nervous to act in front of Marlon Brando!! Which is kind of funny if you think about the fact that that actor, whose name is Lenny Montana, was actually a SOLDIER in the Colombo family (Mafia)! Joe Colombo, a mob figure in New York, at first did not want a film being made from the book!! The Italian American community felt that it through a negative light on the Italian people!!!
But the producer was able to befriend Joe and get him on board!!
There is a great series on Paramount called "The Offer" which tells the whole story of trying to, and eventually getting to, make this FILM!!! Lots of great information on The Godfather is contained in THAT series!!! Including that the horse's head was actually a real horse's head but they didn't kill a horse to get it!!😮
Also DON'T let anybody TALK YOU OUT of watching the third Godfather!! It completes Michael's Arc as a character!!! It's not as great as 1 and 2 but it isn't necessary addition to the story!! I think you OWE it to YOURSELVES to watch it and JUDGE it for YOURSELVES!!!❤
I love watching people seeing this for the first time. BTW.. if no one mentioned it.. the actor that played Luca was actually a enforcer for the columbo family in real life... The actor playing Fredo only made 5 movies and all of them were best picture noms... You never see the actor, you only see fredo...
The great slow zoom that opens the first scene is IMO the best film beginning ever. It tells you something really special is coming...

Lenny Montana, the big guy who plays Luca Brasi was actually a fighter and a member of the mafia Colombo family.
There is a series called The Offer that shows how difficult and spectacular this movie was to produce. Highly recomended!
That nervous actor is a real mobster, he was in the movie representing Colombo family (as I recall) to supervise if everything is going according to cosa nostra will.
Michael served as a Marine in WWII. He was trained & had killed before.
That actor playing Lou Cabrassi was outside practicing his speech for the Godfather was him actually rehearsing his lines and the director decided to film him doing so. Wasn't a bad idea.

Alex Rocco, the actor who plays Moe Green, in real life was part of the infamous The Winter Hill Gang in Sommerville, Ma. fronted by Whitey Bulger. Nice reaction ladies! 👍

A Masterpiece
This must rank as the best film (along with part 2)of all time.An ensemble performance that has no weak spot.
Particularly, John Cazale ( Fredo) and Richard Castellano ( Clemenza) give wonderfully understated performances. You just have to believe that Castellano WAS Clemenza, he brings a real touch to his role.
John Cazale brings the troubled Fredo to life, and you can see the weak Fredo desperately trying to live up to the family reputation but knowing that he can never be what his father wants.
The story of one man's reluctance to be drawn into the murky family business,and his gradual change through circumstance, paints a vivid picture of this violent period of US history.
The horse's head was real. It came from a slaughterhouse where horses were being destroyed for dog food. A member of the production went to the company, chose a horse that resembled the thoroughbred used in the earlier scene, and asked that when the time came, the head be sent to the filmmakers. The company later sent a box with the head packed in ice.
I also read that during rehearsals a fake horse head and blood was used, but when the actual filming was done, they used the real horse head, which shocked the actor so his reactions were authentic. Can anyone verify if this is accurate?

I absolutely loved your reactions. This is a top 3 of all time movie for me. The second film is even better, but the original is my favorite. The third one is a worthy conclusion that deserves more respect. It has its flaws, but it has some of Pacino's best work as an actor. The ending is unforgettable.
An even more interesting story about the actor who plays Luca Brasi. He was an actual mafia enforcer for the New York crime boss Joe Colombo. Joe Colombo got his hooks into the production of this movie and had script approval. The actor that was slated to play Luca Brasi became unavailable due to illness I believe and they had to scramble so they offered the part to former wrestler and mob enforcer Lenny Montana.
Damn. " Leave the gun. Bring the canoli" is one of the most legendary lines of the movie. Definitely shouldn't have been edited out.
I think that the first 2 Godfather movies make the greatest movie ever made. The 3rd one is a let-down, but still has it's moments.

I recently watched the 3rd film (1990 cut), and I liked it more than the 2nd film. The 2nd film felt more like a sad documentary. Where as the 3rd gave me more emotional depth. The ending hits so hard. It actually made me cry.

Every time he called out sick, the hit men would watch how the Don's security adjusted till he finally got careless and only took Fredo with him as a bodyguard. Tom has his people tap the phones of Pulie and all his friends and catch him calling Tattaglia for further instructions.

Also please watch the whole trilogy. 1 and 2 are basically.one long movie that requires seeing both. And even though a lot of people hate on 3, it is actually a very good movie and a good cap on the story. The theatrical release of 3 rather than the "Coda" version is better in my opinion. These characters are so richly written and so well acted, all 3 movies are great

I am not sure if you guys watched Apollo 13. If you have not, I would strongly recommend that movie. It is based on a real incident and it is one of the most authentic and very well crafted movies ever made. A reverting story(of course a true incident), a stellar star cast such as Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Ed Harris, Gary Senise and Bill Paxton, excellent performances, great BGM by James Horner and direction by Ron Howard. Do watch it.
