Netflix's Star Wars Ripoff is a TOTAL DISASTER

  • For some reason, Netflix gave Zach Snyder $166 Million Dollars to make a Star Wars film. The result is a movie some critics are calling one of the worst sci-fi films of all time, and assuredly the worst movie Snyder has ever directed. Let's take a look at some of the reviews for Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire.

    13:50 Re, 'fake grittiness': Yes, there's a specific way of distressing costumes that all movies use. You throw the costume into a dryer for several cycles along with a scoop of dry, medium-gauge gravel. I think it was pioneered by the Lord of the Rings people. Once you recognize the pattern of fake 'wear', you see it everywhere, in every genre film since then.

    • @mikeydflyingtoaster
      @mikeydflyingtoaster 9 місяців тому +2

      I don't think this is even specific to movie costumes. Rolling jeans with rocks is a very common method in factories

    • @jeremy____5747
      @jeremy____5747 9 місяців тому +3

      @@mikeydflyingtoaster right but the context I originally heard this in was when they were trying to costume Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn and wanted his clothes to look like shit from a lifetime patrolling Middle Earth as a Ranger. Regular 'distressing' of costumes meant snipping little holes in the clothes here and there but they decided that didn't look right so they came up with something else. I've heard people who know about knitting look at the shitty sweaters everyone is wearing in The Matrix and say, "There is no way a sweater would unravel that way on its own."

      @@jeremy____5747 Gotcha. I suppose I can support the efforts of the filmmakers because of course they need to create a specific look for their characters even if they fail to do a job that holds up to scrutiny. A normal pair of jeans being ripped and having paint splattered on them before they are ever worn is really bizarre when you think about it. Saying that, I know I own jeans just like that. Fashion is weird

    Hey Vuti. I think calling it a Star Wars rip off gives Star Wars too much credit. From the trailer, I pick up some DUNE, WARHAMMER, ARCANE, FOUNDATION, EXPANSE, fantasy like DUNGEONS & DRAGONS/STARCRAFT and yes, also Star Wars. It's the sci-fi genre. I don't think we as creatives or as a public should allow Star Wars to claim that domain solely.
    As our reality gets close to advanced technology and even space exploration and continue to further ponder our place in the galaxy, I think movies like this will only increase and I'll be damned if they're all gonna be deemed Star Wars knock-off's. The amount of sci-fi and fantasy that Star Wars drew from at the time of its inception is immense and shouldn't be allowed to be packed up with a brand label.
    Anyway, I'm gonna give it a shot.
    To anybody who isn't creative for a living, here's an exercise:
    Think of a truly original idea right now. That hasn't been seen or done before.
    You have to think of what's been seen and done before.
    So the result is by its very nature derived from other existing things.
    In fact, the ideas you come up with are only seen as valuable and or novel precisely because of the significance they derive from other existing thoughts, characters, ideas, concepts, etc.

  • @havocstormbringer1503
    @havocstormbringer1503 9 місяців тому +6

    First, they should not have told people it was originally made for Star Wars.
    Second, they should not have said it was a part one.
    Third, They should have made their first movie, and maybe subsequent movies, a stand alone.
    Also, I agree that critics should at least like, if not specialize in genres they critic. For example, I don't chick flicks so I don't think I shouldn't be advising on one, lol

I guess I should should have kept it a personal choice for myself, that I would worry that my personal genre bias might negatively affect my critique to those that would look to my opinion. I suppose to get around that I would have to let let my genre preferences be known and ask people to judge for themselves

      The only time critics get it wrong is when they are dealing with franchise films like Star Wars. Properly critiquing a film like that requires awareness of the surrounding lore which many critics lack.
      Rebel Moon is a new franchise and thus the critics can be trusted.

    I never hear anyone say this, so i've decided to bring it up anytime Snyder is mentioned- the ending of Man of Steel- Superman snaps Zod's neck, screams with rage and cries about 'what he had to do',and the emotional impact Snyder wants isn't there- because it's a scene lifted from a better story, one i know Snyder is familiar with- Alan Moore's Miracleman. An exact panel reconstruction of Miracleman holding dead Johnny Bates😢.
    Snyder is a hack.

Why? Because I think alot of these people get paid very well by companies to give positive reviews and access. It's a movie trying to take away attention from Disney SW that certainly has all the wrong media attention and subpar content of the last several years with D+ struggling seem like a media slam campaign against Snyder's movie but I think this will have the opposite effect as now everyone will want to see this just to see if it is that bad. Again no one here has seen this movie.

    'Battle beyond the stars' was a Sci-fi 7 samurai. I would expect anything by Snyder to be shallow, he seems to base his plotting on the phrase 'Wouldn't it be cool if..' and the most complex he gets with his characters is 'badass'. However, to be fair, RT 'top reviewers are never going to give Snyder a good review because his fans seem to have the wrong politics, and they're the same people who gave good reviews to the likes of She Hulk, the Last Jedi, etc. - so we shouldn't really be legitimising anything they say. 9% hoewver you wanna look at it is major cause for concern and sure, maybe the problems aren't as bad as the critics are making it out to be, but that could just simply mean the movie sucks slightly less, therefore it still pretty much sucks.

    Honestly Vito, top critics also said the Last Jedi was a masterpiece so... I wouldn't go dunking on this movie until you've watched it. Some people just like dunking on Snyder. @@edreynolds8721 Star Wars has had 40 years to succeed and fail, and for the past decade it’s mostly failed. it’s released some stinkers. This is not even out on Netflix yet, it’s only being reviewed by round 1 of critics from top publications, watch the fucking thing before you start comparing it to how much money Star Wars has made. That’s like asking a toddler why they aren’t playing basketball like Lebron James yet.

      @@edreynolds8721 lol I only liked rogue one from Disney as well. I think I misunderstood your initial comment. Are you pro star wars being the (let’s say) gold standard for science fiction film for how much money it’s made? Is that what you were implying? Because I’d argue that it’s its detriment to the genre. I’ve been increasingly frustrated with how much Disney has taken the IP and cratered it (IMHO) so it’s good to know we agree on that. Frankly, I was looking forward to Rebel Moon because I liked the idea of how Snyder took his story pitch from Disney and gave it to Netflix. Especially after this entire past year of Disney SW. I was hoping for good things because I want there to be competitiveness in this genre, in entertainment as a whole. Aside from that, the trailer looked amazing and it has two of my favorite actors; Charlie Hunnam and Doona Bae. I’m sorry for the misunderstanding if that is the case. Watching a video of Vito ingesting the salt of critics who are probably very pro studio system and anti Netflix was also frustrating to watch. My original stance still stands: like “bad” alt Rock bands like nickleback and creed; Snyder is like Michael Bay in that he’s an easy target and punching bag for heady critics at major publications. Rebel Moon is fucking obviously a contrived Star Wars movie made by Zack Snyder, a guy famous for making shallow comic book movies (yes, watchmen) people knocking it for story structure and characterization are idiots to think it’s anything more than CGI and cool effects. You can expect more of movies, sure, but for Rebel Moon, that’s what I know i’m getting into. This comment is beyond my misunderstanding at this point. if I wanted a deep, rich, sci-fi story I’d fucking READ Dune. SW has always been kinda ass, and I hope it gets put to rest honorably someday. Anyways again sorry and good to know we agree on something.

    Action films like this are no longer interesting, and the "strong female character" trope, whilst it was already very cringe in 2015, has gotten so stale that even mainstream, normie audiences can't really take this slop any more. The only hope that Hollywood tells new stories that are much more character or world-building driven, either with male OR female characters.
    This used to be par-for-the-course in 2014, when we had great male-driven series like LOTR/The Hobbit and Star Wars, but also great female-driven series like My Little Pony. In order to save itself, Hollywood needs to go back to this kind of storytelling. It is very sad that the last 7-8 years of Hollywood have been an absolute disaster, a veritable QUAGMIRE of mind-rot and hackish storytelling, but the only way we can move past it is, as JJ Abrams so infamously and badly put it in 2015, "move backwards, so we can go forwards."

    • @chadmwilliams89

      What would actually be innovative that this point would be to make a story about a male action hero who does all the normal action hero stuff, one liners, pulling off impossible stunts etc, but who just happens to be in a loving relationship with another man who's definitely a little more feminine than him but not full Will and Grace gay.
