Has to do with Kabbalah(Qabalah, Cabala). A subject that cannot be simplified/explained in a comment. Edit to add-several of the band members are into Hermetisism
LD50 is probably top 3 favorite metal albums of all time for me. It’s absolutely amazing. To this day, I’ll still put it on, and listen on repeat without skipping a second of it.
Ryan Martine was my main inspiration to play bass guitar. Even got a Warwick Thumb five string just like his in my twenties. Ended up selling it so i could get a army tent and sleeping bag, in a way that bass saved my life.
Ryan Martini is the best metal bassist of all time. Definitely the most creative and so skilled. He changed metal bass guitar forever. Chad Gray's vocals on LD50 are so deep, dark, emotional, intricate, and very dynamic. All 4 of them are just so talented and they gel perfectly together. Mudvayne changed "nu-metal" and metal forever.
I think Mudvayne is the only band that i ever known that the guitarrist is the least talked about member. And not because he isn't good or anything. But this trio of bass, vocals and drums are just so freaking good.
The line "spit on my own plate" really solidified what I believed this song to be about which is self sacrifice, severing of ties, divorce from who I am right now. Either for the better (leaving a toxic situation) or for the worse (leaving your support circle, flipping the table over)
Please do every mudvayne song 😭😭 And spot on with the lyrics. They have tons of songs about letting go of ego, and other philosophical concepts. Though they also talk a lot about identity and thinking for yourself which almost contradicts the other work. They’re a deep band, and super ironic and don’t take themselves seriously, despite being miles ahead of their peers. I always call them Tool but with louder and shorter songs. I also named my company Ain Soph because of this song! Ain: nothingness Ain Soph: limitless, and Ain Soph Aur infinite nothingness is what it boils down to in basic terms Love that you like them 😁
Non video related: I feel like there are some interesting stories of your past. If you’re willing to share some I would love to see a weekly (or monthly) segment about stories from your past. Video related: Great video! Love the content, the reactions, and hearing your viewpoints on songs I love now, and some of songs I grew up with. Great stuff! Thanks for sharing!
Hey guys and yes my favorite song as well. What a great debut from the band! The bass is just ridiculous and great playing and nothing much like it out there. Got a chance to see them back in the day at an Ozzdest, great show! You guys went deep on this one and some intense stuff from Judson, great reaction man...
Thank you for more mudvayne! I'm glad Judson liked it even with all the explicitives at the end. Definitely want to see more from them. And if you like the bass playing you need to check out Soften the Glare.
He wrote a song called Drink Drank Drunk. Come on. He was good in Mudvayne, but Hellyeah was a steaming pile of shit. I don't take pleasure in saying that. Three of my favorite bands (Mudvayne, Pantera, and Nothingface) came together to make the worst supergroup. It bummed me out big time. I was so excited in the beginning. I bought the first and second album when they came out and that was it.
Mudvayne is very nostalgic for me. They were a major influence in my younger life. Especially this album and this song. So many memories wrapped around this song and album. Great video guys I'll be sure to check more of your content 🤘🏻 cheers 🍻
Cool conversation. I thought he was just speaking of suicide in the sense that he tries to free others of his pain, which is only done by freeing others of himself as a whole. Idk. The Patient Mental is my fav song of theirs I think. Great lyrics too. Specifically the line "I'm just like a clock upon the wall Always moving but never going anywhere." I always thought was pretty on point.
I just got done listening to this whole album the other day and I gotta say this album is amazing!!!!!! I do gotta a couple songs I like from this album!!!!
I think in connection with the song and Ain Soph Aur. The song is structured to reflect the 3 veils. If the song is not about the singer personally, all we need is to picture a avatar of sort. But a avatar who's in inner conflict with themselves to achieve greatness through personal growth. Needing to strip away everything negative, physical and emotional ties in oneself to achieve that goal. Like all these attachments we make as humans is a virus that we must train for to reject (or spit up on my plate and then I turn and walk away) as he puts. I think that fact he mentions Ain Soph Aur, is to connect the listener to that concept to dig this deep in the content. Not only can you now follow what is playing out in the story he tells of this avatar, but you can now pose the question of what happens to an individual who goes through these steps. Is it achievable? Is it worth it? Are you better for putting yourself though this? Just a theory but obviously it's art so it's all subjective
Damn, I actually saw them live like, 20+ years ago at a tiny club in Fort Myers, FL! Pretty sure it was the same place o saw Everclear and Static X..still can’t believe bands used to come here lol
I love not falling, is one of my favorite songs and videos, Judson that likes aliens may love that profusely and is an opportunity for him to experience the and playing to give him some levels of perspective
Very important album and song in my teenage years. This album is a Masterpiece. Tottallly underrated and misslabeled into the whole nu metal genre and movement of the early 2000's IMO. I think because of this Mudvayne fell into the trap of this labeling in the way they approached all their music writing in the albums that came after. What would be calling this album if it was made today?
Nice reaction, and better that existential discussion, that album is a masterpiece the next one could be death blooms in it they reached their best sound.
I just listened to the album 3 days ago, and for so long this cd was on shelves for more than a decade now, coz I’m no longer excited to listen to this record, And when I gave it a shot again, I realize that this is a pretty good album!!
Another great review and song Mudvanye is a very unique and fun band to listen to great stuff hey Richard just wondering did you hear Kerry Kings new song yet sounds like old school Slayer another great song
Hey Richard, I think Judson would really like some Ayreon! I think The Day That the World Breaks Down would be a great intro since the video gives some insight on all the artist Arjen works with. Also anything from the Ayreon Universe concert is top tier performance (The Theory of Everything, Everyone Dies, Star of Sirrah, and Loser features a didgeridoo hah)
To enlighten anyone with the background of Chad the vocalist, he was a crew lead for a manufacturing company that was making a lot of money. He alone was making an estimate a little over $40,000 USD yearly from it, which back then was a lot of money. He plucked himself and pulled himself away from that lifestyle, just to chase something that was seemingly bigger than himself. It was the music, it was the band, it was everything. So I'm thinking maybe he was reflecting on his recent choices up to that point and manifesting them into the song.
Seriously. I hold Ryan martinie up to the likes of Les Claypool. His stage presence and technical ability are out of this world. Check out his jazz side project. Even if jazz isn't your thing, we can all agree that the bass lines are insane. The side project is called Soften the Glare.
Hey guys, I've been loving the videos. ld 50 is one of my favorite albums of all time. If i could throw a recommendation at you i would appreciate it the song is i was buried in mt pleasant cemetary by woods of ypres. It has a solid piano line throught out the song that really adds emotional weight to the doominess of the track. It's a really good one from david Gold the late frontmam, thank you!
I think nu metal is right for them. Nu metal, IMO anyway, is defined by metal (mainly 90s groove and alt metal) + hip hop (primarily in the back beats, not necessarily rapping vocals) + "x" (an outside influencing factor). The "x" is the most defining characteristic of nu metal, and what makes it so hard to define nu metal bands cleanly. To give a few examples: for Korn it was kind of a mix of the grunge and darker alternative stuff from the 80s and 90s, for Slipknot it was extreme metal (mainly death metal and grindcore), and it Mudvayne's case it was progressive music and jazz.
It’s somewhat true that nu metal has grooves and alternative sound but it’s more of borrowing the groove the groove sound by making it more sludgy nu form or make it a down tuned seven string, which differentiate from the groove sound( despite groove metal is a broad term), but for influence of Alternative Metal, there are certain Nu bands who uses Alternative/ groove sound but they only use a small portion to alternate influence in their music; you have used Korn self titled for your example and it’s true that Korn used grunge and alternative metal in their album but it’s only a small portion in their album and it didn’t really define their style, what defined their style from the self-titled and second/third album is the hyper anger, whispering, quite singing, down tuning, hyper anger/screaming, hip-hop( which you have included), weird singing vocals, angry shouting, refraining, harsh-death vocals, and scatting. I understand that nu-metal is hard to define but we can say for every genre; thrash metal has inconsistent sound due to power metal, death metal, crossover punk, and black metal. Death metal having thrash death with the combination of thrashy-punk- death shriek vocals( while playing thrash instruments)-to Cookie Monster vocals- to sludge death metal- 90’s metalcore ( hardcore) vocals or proto deathcore vocals. Alternative Metal have inconsistent sound too and most of them don’t sound like Faith No More or Helment.
I think at this point in metal sub-genres, it's almost easier using star chart tracking instead of the traditional umbrella brackets. Then you could see all the different sub-sub-genres in their orbit.
I wouldn't put Mudvayne in the genre of Nu-metal either. There maybe some sections that are nu-metalish but overall they're in a genre of their own called Mudvayne. Same with System of A Down.
Supposedly, there are more Rock subgenres than Metal subgenres. Wikipedia has 150-ish articles for the former and 62 for the latter. Not a perfect way to compare the two but it does make sense. A lot of Rock subgenres just don't have "Rock" in the name. Or the "Rock" part gets dropped in everyday speech.
No disrespect to Mudvayne, but I did not expect one of their songs to trigger such an existential discussion. Good to still have you with us smashing those pumpkins Judson.
Because there’s literally something about their songs, especially early ones. It’s kinda between the lines. Or in the way the music and the lyrics go along together
Late to the party on this one. Hey Richard… there’s some pretty sick metal riffs on Mellon Collie… it’s a real mixed bag. I think you’d be surprised by some of it :p
Great song and reaction! Would you consider doing a reaction for a track off the album The Blackening by Machine Head? Preferably Clenching the Fists of Dissent - Cheers!
I always got Tool vibes from L.D. 50, at least the heavier side of Tool. So much more prog metal than numetal or whatever. That changed after this album, though.
I think the reason this album stood out is because of Ryan. The man is an absolute machine. I just wish mudvayne didn't mute the bass in the albums that followed. The following albums would have been much better in my opinion
After which time Judson died, he came back autistic? In all seriousness, the deep lyrical analysis is some of your best moments. I get the feeling you both have seen some shite.

Mudvayne was so slept on. They came at a perfect time. I will forever love them.
🤘
I mean they were popular as hell though
@@hamburgersandfuriousanger6820 They were and they weren't at the same time. It was weird.
Yup I heard Digg and was instantly hooked.

Matt is a monster behind the kit
Really cool and interesting discussion at the end.
this is what I really enjoy from this guys, the different perspectives
what a wonderful conversation this song gave to you.. so deep!! mudvayne is awesome and so underrated.. we want more.. pharmascopia next!! please
One of my top Mudvayne songs 🤘
LD 50 is a perfect album, start to finish 👌
Facts!!!
This is by far my favorite Mudvayne song. Anyone going through dark times can find relevance in their lives for this
The line "spit on my own plate" really solidified what I believed this song to be about which is self sacrifice, severing of ties, divorce from who I am right now. Either for the better (leaving a toxic situation) or for the worse (leaving your support circle, flipping the table over)
That's how I always pictured it...either way god those lyrics hit me
Please do every mudvayne song 😭😭

Classic song from a classic album. This album and the album after is a must listen thru.
Severed/nothing to gein/death blooms were always my favourite tracks on the album. The bass work was phenomenal!
My favorite song of theirs!
I like Smashing Pumpkins! I love the opening classic piano piece then goes into Tonight Tonight is stellar!
Absolutely fuking masterpiece album!!!!
I always comment this. I played this album so much it stopped worked on my Walkman. I had to buy a new copy eventually. LD50 is perfect.
Ohhh i still got this cd....this band it's amazing!!!
Nothing quite like this song or the bass performance 💯🔥🔥🔥
Such a total banger of an album. Every track is awesome. My favorite is probably Cradle
Was impress by this album back then. Didn't know that it will became a timeless masterpiece 👌
Chad's lyrics on everything he does are 10s. Best poet of our time.
Close but not quite..
Dax Riggs (Acid Bath, Agents of Oblivion, deadboy & the Elephantmen, self-titled albums) is a far superior lyricist
He wrote a song called Drink Drank Drunk. Come on. He was good in Mudvayne, but Hellyeah was a steaming pile of shit. I don't take pleasure in saying that. prog!! definitly!! so good man and nostalgic!!
Id call em New wave of American heavy metal, I think they got branded nu metal because of the lack of solos and the sampling
I loved this whole video.
first 10 seconds, like for MC&IS, plus one more like for Mudvayne
Nice reaction, and better that existential discussion, that album is a masterpiece the next one could be death blooms in it they reached their best sound.

Wasn't expecting to hear naughty by nature but there it is
Not a fan of most Mudvayne, but ive always loved that song. As usual the bass is so unique and interesting its what I key in on.
To enlighten anyone with the background of Chad the vocalist, he was a crew lead for a manufacturing company that was making a lot of money. He alone was making an estimate a little over $40,000 USD yearly from it, which back then was a lot of money. curious to see him reacting to Sepultura's Roots Blood Roots or Desperate Cry.
Smashing pumpkins intro! Mellon Collie indeed
You guys should check out the bass players solo video. Its called Soften the Glare-March of the Cephalopods.
The bass player is like the Danny Carey of Bass Players… always busy always tearing shit up
