Heated wood such as this is set/cured. It is harder but at the same time it is easier to work with as it no longer has long and wet fibers that rip from the blank. You would not get good results from a “green” block. I suspect that there may be some effect on the color from the heat it was subjected to as well.
❤ If I where to name this piece I would call it the pheonix vase, but as the top has not been gauged out to put flowers in it, then an ornamental focus point, its very beautiful,,from the ashes to a new life hint the name pheonix.!!!
It's burnt only so deep. Fibers change, as someone else said, but otherwise not much different than an unburnt log. It's still nice to see the finished product.
Wow, moving the tool rest while the machine is in motion. This was something that would have resulted in one being expelled from shop class back in the early 70’s. I could see this as a beautiful lamp base, the color is perfect!
Ah! A lamp base. I was wondering what this was. While I thought it was pretty, I was trying to figure out what it could be used for. Yes, I agree, it would be a lovely lamp base.
Moving the tool rest and wearing a glove while a lathe was going, yeah. It's definitely a nice piece, but isn't the best technique to show off to people who don't know better.
Gorgeous! Wonderful skill/talent! I'm just wondering [because I need to know all the things]... Would the piece have turned out the same if it [the base log] hadn't been burned first? Keep being awesome.
Interesting that wood once burnt can harden itself. Gonna have to google this one. Unless someone out there can save me time with a simple explanation please 🤪. What I’d like to try is a burnt log that has been sitting in a swamp for a few years. I wonder 🤔. Has anyone tried this ? I’d love to hear and possibly see the results. Thanks from Canada. Heyyyy isn’t this the guy that turns those monster red woods ? I love how he uses a lathe that looks like it’s made from scrap tractors and turns works of beauty. I watched guys and gals here in North America use bazillion dollar machines and never can duplicate this fellas items. Just say. 😉😊
Thomas.Using burnt wood was to show any scrap wood can be used to create beautiful things. It was just an example , it could have been drift wood or a fallen tree.
Maybe I need to start doing this, and the idea of turning burn hardened mesquite *really* appeals to me.. perhaps it's because although I hate mesquite trees (everyone who has ever dealt with them does), I love mesquite grilled steak, and the wood is amazingly hard and beautiful when finished. It's like a devil with redeeming qualities.
Forgive me for being offensive in any way. (If anything im quite ignorant to this topic) I’m more curious than anything. Is this to be like a leg to a table? Or just simply a work of art? (It’s defo a nice looking piece) I’m kinda confused on this. I found The video very relaxing. And Honestly found myself wondering if this might be something I’d like to try my hand at.
May I ask the purpose, cause I don’t understand the expectations. The idea sounds awesome at first “glance”, and it might forever give off a nice Smokey scent if that’s ur thing, but the burn only ones a short ways down, and has to be entirely removed, cause it’s too brittle. Ud need to vacuum seal it with clear sealant, and then u can make it workable as far in as the sealant invades.
You DO NOT hold your tool like that. You grab it like a "dead lift" grip. In CASE your tool gets stuck in the piece. It won't grabnit and break your thumb.
When I saw how burnt the wood is, I expected to see some really cool patterns inside the wood..but once you got past the burnt surface, it was just normal wood. Is it possible to do this with wood that is burnt all the way to the center?
I suspect the point of using charred wood like that is that it should be A LOT drier than wood right off the stump or even wood that has been sitting around drying for a while. Drier wood is more stable and will not change shape as much after it is cut and shaped.
In some parts of the world the all seem to turn the same in different sizes. 🧐 Yes its nice, a bit useless and i have seen that type of i don‘t know what it is a bit too much.
So many steps where I know I'd screw something up and have to go back to square one! I admire these wonderful artisans.
My experience with charred wood is it has been substantially hardened which would change the turning and finishing qualities of the piece
It is beautiful...but I would have loved, just a bit of the burnt timber left on.😊

Got to be the "PHOENIX VASE", stunning skills👍😷👍
Absolutely stunning a lot of precise work there.😊
Really nice work, freehanding with the angle grinder. Nice looking vase!
Beautiful piece. Who knew something could be made with burnt wood.
He's making chipboard

Moisture content would definitely take finish well.

Very unique BOWLING PIN! 🥸
Brilliant! Just Brilliant!!

Amazing! , Fascinating to watch.

Beautiful projects sir👋👋👋👋🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩
Awesome piece ❤❤❤
Congratulations commander! Great word of art! 👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋
Before you burn it first turn it leaving about .5 per side then burn it then finish turning it. You get a lot more stunning finishes.
Beautiful!
watching this i can feel the dust getting in my eye..... so amazing
I WILL say. It looks very nice.
I love seeing wood that is so beautful after the work of skilled hands.

@13:20 - sounds like the dentist drilling my tooth
The discolored wood is amazing.. the smoke color is great
Very nice,great job!👍🏻
Very nice job maybe later you can hollow it out and make a lamp out of it
awesome, a faux vase. Other then the lack of a drill bit, nice work.
Newbie here!
You have taught me a ton.
please wear your safety gear. not like this guy.
This is so beautiful!❤💥
Nice tools ...now all you need is an idea
Looks good as new, like it hasn't been burnt
Very creative, thanks..
Very impressive with burnt wood
I have one of those grinders with the 3 carbide cutting cups. Those things are vicious.

Beautiful‼️

WOW... Really Beautiful!!! Good Job dude
What a talented man. Great Job!!! The only talents young people have today is smoking pot and drinking beer.
Hope a stained glass lamp shade goes on top of that.😊
Nice start for a table lamp, eh?
Starting before is the same as burning after. Working with wood creates a mess either way
AMAZING THANK YOU
I learned recently that the word for the heating of the wood is "torrify". Had never heard that word before.
Breathtaking
Exquisite shape. I was wondering, is the sanding drum fitted to the angle grinder a product you can buy or is it a homemade mandrel?
Very nice
Sooper cool.
awesome craftmanship
Very nice!
Thinking that it would become a lamp. Then I remembered it is bad luck to do that to a burnt piece of wood.
Nice piece kuya. God bless your work
What is the purpose of that creation? Display?
Very Beautiful
New luxury idea for the rich; Use fancy turned wood logs in your fireplace. 🎩
Ok, so what is it? A sculpture? A lamp base? A candle holder? What?
Let's be real here, that's not a piece of burnt wood, slightly chared maybe but not burnt.
It's not really burnt wood but charred wood.. Burnt wood would be black all the way through.
Nice, but I was thinking all that wood getting grind to pulp
Like to see some reburning on the lathe with a torch for some patina

Nice!
Where did you get that sanding cone? i've never seen one of those before.
The burning Ctually carbonizes the wood.making it water and rot resistant
Beautiful ❤
Nice wood SCRAPING
*Dong chi bộ đôi vẫn chưa được giải ngũ còn bắt đi lao động khổ sở thế này thì thật đáng trách.*
Haha 😂
Is it about saving a burnt piece of wood or something?
It looks like the top blew off a bowling pin.
Another 3 and a base you would have table. It started has fire wood and ended has a small bit of fire wood.
Looks like Rainbow Poplar.
Lovely, but I thought the char was going to be incorporated into the design.
May I ask the purpose, cause I don’t understand the expectations. Very nice. What is it?
Ok, he made a bowling pin where the alien exomorph has broken out to terrorize the bowling alley😅
Yes I’m kidding, it’s very nice…
What is it for? You can’t use it as a vase.
You DO NOT hold your tool like that. You grab it like a "dead lift" grip. In CASE your tool gets stuck in the piece. It won't grabnit and break your thumb.
So……once the char is off, it’s just a regular piece of wood?? Precisely!
Wood being burnt had no outcome in the results other than making a mess.
The wood should have MUCH less moisture content in it and should change shape less over time.
So, not burnt... rather chard on the outer edges. Hmm.
I was always taught not to wear gloves when working on a lathe.
Looks like all handmade tools also
Hello, why did you burn the wood before working it?
Good job
When I saw how burnt the wood is, I expected to see some really cool patterns inside the wood..but once you got past the burnt surface, it was just normal wood. Is it possible to do this with wood that is burnt all the way to the center?
Nope it will powderize if all is charred in and out
I suspect the point of using charred wood like that is that it should be A LOT drier than wood right off the stump or even wood that has been sitting around drying for a while. Drier wood is more stable and will not change shape as much after it is cut and shaped.
@@rice0009 i agree
The best way of getting a dark look is maybe to use a chefs torch to highlight the grain
..if you have to ask...😄
A bowling pin???
The burn is only near the surface, there is no good reason to turn this piece over an unburnt piece.
In some parts of the world the all seem to turn the same in different sizes. 🧐 Yes its nice, a bit useless and i have seen that type of i don‘t know what it is a bit too much.
Дяденьки очень нужны опилки.😂😂😂😂😂😂 Но получилось красиво.
Excellent
20 minutes to make a bowling pin 😂
Is it a vase?
I’m at 9:20 so I guess I’m not getting a glorious Vase? ❤
Wow!
The beauty is within.
I feel like I just wasted 10 minutes of my life…
"I'm not sure what type of wood this is but the customer said he wanted ash....Never mind, I know how to turn any wood into ash"........
What was the point of burning the log??
