THANK YOU SO MUCH! THIS WAS FANTASTIC! IN ADDITION I NEED A DOORBELL TRANSFORMER WHICH I DID NOT KNOW EXISTED. THANK YOU FOR HELPING A 60 YEAR YOUNG DO THE INSTALL!
You have been the best on explaining the use of the transformer needed for the ring doorbell...I have been searching for the right instructional installation video that also includes installations of the transformer and found you....Good Job and keep up the good instructional videos...now i can buy my Ring doorbell with the correct transformer for my installation, thank you!!!
Very good video and I will use it to install the ring doorbell pro I bought my aunt for her birthday. I’m retired Navy so safety first and safety glasses when drilling.
Thanks so much for watching! Yes, safety first for sure! All of my new videos that I will be doing I will be showing more of the safety precautions while doing work or construction videos. Always good to lead by example! Thanks!
Great Job Jeff, thanks for the detail. I have been planning to get the Ring Pro, but was hesitant because of the additional power unit supplied with it. I have an electronic bell with three different chime units on three floors. After watching you install the new transformer and attach the supplied power unit. I checked my transformer and found a way to attach one wire to the transformer and fish it to a chime unit. Solving my problem of presenting a way to make it work. Never sure until the bell rings and the phone chimes.
Thanks so much for watching! Wow 3 different units on three floors! That would of made for a great video! ;o) Excellent you figure that out! I hope everything is working perfectly for you.
Your video was the best by far! Especially for a novice DIYer like myself. It was very detailed . . . even down to the part where I nearly forgot to remove the film that covers the button . Thank you.
None of my nearby Home Depots had a 24V 40VA transformer, but I just ordered one from Amazon with next day delivery. I've had a Door Bell Pro for about a year. My old mechanical bell rarely worked, and the Door Bell Pro just stopped working. I've dropped both of the little security screws and lost them among the landscaping stones next to my door, and I was just waiting for you to drop yours! Also, the transformer can be mounted directly to the hole in the junction box by putting the wires through and tightening the long diagonal screw from the inside of the box to secure it.
Thanks Jeff great video. I upgraded my transformer and got everything working but it only worked for less than an hour. I have 4 other ring and they are all online. There is power to the transformer but can’t get the doorbell to go back online. Would an extender be needed?
4:20 Thanks...Great clear and well articulated install...Now please get some joist hangers where those floor joists meet that header. The building code where I live would not allow that.
Jeff, I would put a bead of silicone around the Ring casing since the wiring is just attached to the back. I haven't had a called back water damage for my installations. Other installers have gotten callbacks.
Thanks for posting this well explained video. I've been considering purchasing one of these and wondered how difficult it might be to install. I could definitely use this video for reference whenever I install my own.
Thanks so much for the support! I could probably do a better video but I'm improving as I go along! I'm thinking about installing the Ring Home Alarm System. I'm also going to install another floodlight cam in my backyard. I will do a better video on those! Thanks ;o)
Great video! I consider myself very handy, but I had no idea about the transformer! Now I know what I am up against! Thanks again from your Nieghbor to the south (actually almost straight west) Good day! 👍
Hi Jeff, I am adding this comment so that the safety issue in your video stay’s current. Ideally, you would update the video. The transformer you’re installing in the video CAN BE installed using the knock out where the previous one was located. In fact, it must be as per code. Instead of a lock nut, this particular transformer uses a small bolt as seen at 9:01 - 9:15 to secure the transformer - after the wires are fed through the knockout and the transformer is flush against the device box, tighten the small bolt against the inside of the box. I hope that others will see this comment and the others that have been posted as there is so much wrong with this -- those wires are not rated to be free-aired, should not be unprotected passing through the knockout and an opening that size should never be left exposed.
Thanks for the comment! I will be doing an updated video on this issue shortly and correct that. I will post the update for everyone as soon as its ready! I appreciate the help and taking the time to mention that! Thanks so much!
I just wanted to say very detailed information. Like you I research Ring Pro like you before I purchased 18 months ago. I knew I had to replace my doorbell transformer which I knew was not a 16 24 transformer. I never heard of a Edwards, but bought the HeathZenith transformer. So far it has worked well, but I have to wonder if Edwards is better? I do see Amazon sells Edwards, but no problems with the Heathzenith to date 2/10/19. I am only 5:15 into your video, but I give you 5 out of 5 stars for being so interesting. Good job feeding wires on angle for doorbell. The only thing you didn't cover was pairing to app by pressing setup button on doorbell before placing cover on. I like Ring products and occasionally refresh my memory on install and operation. Thanks, Don from Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Thanks so much for that! I definately like to watch videos and research before I buy. if your transformer is working then you should be ok I don't think you will have a problem. I should do a video on setup and also I will be doing some videos on all the products after using them for so long. I think I'm going to also buy the home alarm system.
My three Ring cameras, doorbell, floodlight and spotlight are over a year old now and I needed to press setup button on all. I think with new Ring products including in house security, you just scan units now. I have been playing with idea of buying Ring in house security. I don't know if you ever saw him, but I also watch LIFEHACKSTER on UA-cam and he reviews all Ring cameras, plus other things. He's very informative too on his reviews.
What you called the Self-Leveling tool is the conversion plate from the Original Ring to PRO. It covers the holes, as the Pro only needs two screws and they are in the center vs the corners.
Hi Jeff. Thanks for instructions as we have same setup with recessed door moulding beside brick. How did you fill.in existing old doorbell hole? Why didn't you use video door bell back plate? Thanks
Hi Jeff You certainly have some scary wiring in Canada compared to the UK by the way. I bought one of these to increase the security around our home, it does work well, I would advise going on the ring website as there are some small software issues for fine tuning the cam. I bought a plug in Transformer as I have a socket (Electrical outlet) near the front door (from Amazon) Christmas greetings
I'm actually going to be shooting a new video for the transformer upgrade. Yes, I did see those plug in the wall ones that work fine as well. I'm going to go over those in the new video it might give some people more options! Thanks so much for watching!
nice one Jeff on the inside i saw two white leads coming into the ring bell mechanism from the transformer and on the same connection please throw lights on it or explain thanks
great video with explanation of transformer issue most people are having. I got the Ring Doorbell 2 , digital chime that I have verified will work with the doorbell 2, ELK transformer 24v 40va, do I need that little white box that you installed in the chime? it didn't come in the box I received. Happy New Year!
Nice video, i'm going to have to do the same for drilling my mortar. How did you go about sealing the old door bell location and protecting the wires that first go into the mortar? Just some caulking?
All I did was push the wires flush against the brick and door frame and used white silicone. I should of shown that part in the video I didn't realize how many people had the same issue as I did.
Hi Jeff, great video. I’m confused though - surely when you connect your transformer to the light, the doorbell won’t work when the light is switched off because the light switch will control the power output to the transformer?
Thank you Jeff for this video. I’ve just installed the Ring Doorbell Pro and new transformer, but I only used a 16v - 30VA transformer. Seems to work great for last week now. I initially wanted to go higher with a 24V - 40VA transformer, but heard going too high may damage the doorbell. Is that not accurate? And is there any noticeable advantages going higher (e.g. faster/clearer live video feed)? My live feeds loads in about 3-5 seconds and pretty clear - which I assume is normal. Thanks in advance for your feedback.
Jeff, thanks for this video and the effort you put forth. Can you tell me what gauge wire you are using from the door bell to the transformer to the mechinal chime. I will be running new wire. TIA
Hi I bought the ring doorbell pro since last year . I took it out of country in Africa but I have problem to install it because the voltage in Senegal is 220 volt and I don't know what type of transformer or adapter to use to install it.I really need help.Thanks.
Ok. I bought a ring pro. From offer up , but I have a problem, it was owned before , so it’s already programmed too someone else , so how do I get around that ? Or reprogram it ???? If you can help. It would be great !
You should be able to do so on the app but if you are having an issue with that you might have to call Ring Support and have them clear the Mac ID # from the system and start new with a new scan or set up!
Jeff Lepard I’ll answer my own question, as long as your transformer is at least 16 volts or after you upgrade your transformer you don’t need it. Mine works without it.
Thank you Jeff for the video. One quick question; I purchased a Ring Video Doorbell. What would it be the best bell Voltage Transformer to use if I reside in Australia. The voltage in Australia is 230v 50Hz.I would be appreciated if you can answer my question.Thanking you
Thanks for watching! Depending on how much voltage amps your doorbell transformer is putting out now it may work or you may need to change. Everything would be the same only that your transformers input would be either dual or it would have to be 220-240 volts with the same output needed to run the ring doorbell. I can see some of them on amazon even if you click my link you can type in the search the proper voltage transformer. If you can't find one let me know I will find a link for you.
I would like to ask you one question if it is possible. I saw your UA-cam video about ring alarm system. I want to ask if this system can be connected with wired sensors. I am asking that because I already have an old security system in my house and I have already installed sensors motion detectors etc. thank you in advance
The main concern for me and what's keeping me from buying one is that because of its location, pretty much anyone can do something to blind the camera by covering up the lens with tape, or smear it with something. I wonder if this is a problem?
I guess is someone is there to do something wrong they could do that but camera are everywhere now. Most likely if someone is there they won't even waste their time blocking the camera they will just do whatever bad they are trying to do. In the end I think having is better than not having. That's the way I look at it.
I suggest you measure the voltage before going to the effort of changing the transformer. It's simple. Measure the voltage at the doorbell switch wires. It must be 16-24VAC, which is correct. If less, The Ring won't work reliably. Yes, replace it with a 24VAC transformer. Ring does make a "Plug in Adapter" transformer for US 110v power only, just another transformer option.
Jeff one more question... my current doorbell looks like it’s using a thin “Telephone cable” wire. There’s like 4 thin very flimsy cable encased in a larger cable and it uses 2 of those 4 cables... would those be ok with the upgraded power adapter you’ve shown in your video?
Yeah that sounds like they used telephone wire or something like that. The good news is that the door bell runs on low voltage so you would be ok to use the existing wires there with an upgraded transformer.
Question, if my house was built this year, do you think the transformer that was included with my current doorbell will be the correct one for the ring doorbell? I dont have a basement and I'm not entirely sure where the transformer is located. Also, it wouldn't be a Canadian video if it didn't start snowing mid video lol
Hi jefff I got doorbell pro. But I have issues installation. Because my existing door bell was a speaker intercom ??? Can u help??? Ho to do the installation plz
Hey Jeff. How do I wire the doorbell chime to the newly installed transformer? Your video was obvious when it came to wiring the transformer to the Ring Doorbell. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Otherwise great video.
Love to move the Ring to the brick front but it leaves wires exposed from entrance into brick, an easy clip for bad guys an unsightly as well. Jeff never shows us what he did to address the problem at the close of this video. Please advise.
All I did was tuck the wires flush against the brick and the door frame and used white silicone to cover them. I should of put that finishing touch in the video I didn't realize that there were many more people that had the same issue as I did.
Just upgraded my rings doorbell to rings doorbell pro. But am having hard time connecting the pro to my iPhone 7 for setup. Tried rebooted my router, reinstalled the app still cannot connect the pro to my phone for setup. Any suggestions and advice is greatly appreciated
I wonder if there is a problem with the Mac Id on the ring system. I would say to contact Ring customer support and get them to check everything out they are normally helpful.
It was crappy that I had to do that but the door wouldn't close if I mounted it where the old one would have been. I could of extended it with a piece of wood or something but it would still have to spill over onto the brick anyways.
Question: I will be installing a Ring Pro. My existing transformer is 10VA, which is what my existing digital chimes calls for. When I install the new transformer with 30VA will that cause any problems to the digital chimes I now have? Thanks.
Great question, it should not do anything to your digital doorbell as some new houses have stronger transformers I'm sure they would of designed the product to be good for either or. Let me know! Thanks for watching!
Nope, you can install the doorbell higher or lower as you need it. The range of view is excellent it really captures a wide view so you won't have to worry about that.
Hi Jeff. Great Video: Question; I'm also in Canada - Northern Ontario - How has the Doorbell Pro held up in winter? I hear after a certain temperature (-5?) the unit doesn't work anymore? Can you confirm?
Yes I have heard issues with the cold weather! I haven't had any issues with either the doorbell or my floodlight cam. I've had ice build up on it as well and they were still functioning!
I'm having an issue with the wires being stuffed behind the door jam. Guys who installed the door put the wires behind it. Also I have the same issue with the doorbell being too wide to fit it in between the door and the brick.
As long as you can access those wires you can always extend them to where you are installing the unit. You might have to drill like I did to extend the unit if its possible.
Hi Jeff, is the transformer for the chime or the ring doorbell pro? I purchased the ring doorbell pro and the ring plug in chime that plugs into the wall and connects via WiFi.
Great video, thank you!, question: Do you know what size is screw driver, I lost mine and I need to buy it in Amazon, are all screw drivers the same size. Any help will be greatly appreciated Thanks
Jeff Lepard We thought the same, until we opent the box 😄 Even in the description you can’t see its included 🤔 weird! My sun is electrician and wanted to order one at work, luckily he didn’t yet 😅
I have an Edward transformer # 592 with 24V 20VA written on it. It’s written chimes on the transformer. I see it in the garage next to the circuit breaker. I think I need to wire the corner most screws either side for 24V 20V since it’s pointed towards the further most screws. My question is can any wire go to any screw? I see one wire is greenish white and the other red. Right now, Red is connected to the middle screw and green to the corner screw. What exact connection do I need to do for ring doorbell pro? Please note this is quite an old house built in 70s but the circuit breaker itself has been modified. Which exact beaker should I switch off since I do not see any general switch? Can I switch just the mains off to be safe before I start?
Does your transformer have 2 wire poles to it or 3? Yes if you don't really know which breaker to switch off you could kill the entire power if you need to be safe. If your transformer has 2 poles it doesn't matter which wire you connect as it will produce the same results.
Jeff Lepard It has 3 poles and I am thinking the further most poles or screws are 24V 20VA since I can see the arrows pointed between them. Voltage is good to go but I am not sure if 20 VA is good enough power for the door bell pro. I will probably need to play individually on the circuit breaker since I see everything from bedroom, range, kitchen etc. but the chimes.
I would then check first the door bell button to make sure the wires are not touch each other or crossing each other somewhere. Then check the actual chime unit on the wall. You could use a tester and see what voltage you are getting. It's possible you may need to change the chime unit itself.
@@JeffLepard Hi from Toronto! I would like this too, please. I would like to tie into a pre-existing exterior AC outlet. You can use my house to do your video, and I will record!
I’m scared of dealing with electrical stuff now cuz I was putting up my Christmas lights and I just didn’t get shocked, I got electrocuted !! Omg so painful ! half my body was paralyzed for like less then 20 mins ! So scary dealing with wires now lol
Quetion i put another transformer but i don't remember the voltage i charged my rig door bell but as soon as i connected the door bell it last like 30 seconds and then it dies does that mean i have the wrong transformer?
Thanks Jeff. I just replaced my transformer, which is attached to a smoke detector. Now I am not getting AC to the smoke detector and am not sure why. Black to black, white to white and green to ground. The rest of the smoke detectors are working but not the one with the transformer. I noticed the old transformer has an additional black wire coming out of it which was attached to the white wiring...not sure why. Suggestions anyone?

Jeff as i would say a great blow by blow presentation on how to install Ring Door Bell Pro. Did as you directed and it works just fine.
That's excellent and Thanks for the support!
None of my nearby Home Depots had a 24V 40VA transformer, but I just ordered one from Amazon with next day delivery. I've had a Door Bell Pro for about a year. My old mechanical bell rarely worked, and the Door Bell Pro just stopped working.

What you called the Self-Leveling tool is the conversion plate from the Original Ring to PRO. It covers the holes, as the Pro only needs two screws and they are in the center vs the corners.
That is called the Retro Fit Kit.
Hi Jeff. Thanks for instructions as we have same setup with recessed door moulding beside brick. How did you fill.in existing old doorbell hole? Why didn't you use video door bell back plate? Thanks
The back plate would not fit where the old doorbell was. I just used caulking to fill in the holes and caulked over the wires after tucking them in.
Great video!! This will help me with brother's full system install. Already saw floodlight video. 2 thumbs up!!

One of them is just a bypass and goes directly to the door bell button. I'm some houses you won't have that there.
Great job Jeff.

Thank you Jeff. Video was a great help.
I'm glad that helped you out! Thanks so much for watching!
Very nicely explained. Thank you.
Can't believe Johnny Sins taught me how to install my Ring Pro
Your the 2nd person to say I look like him! LOL I've actually been told I look like Michael Bolton most of my life.
LMFAOOO as soon as i saw the thumbnail i was like woah johny sins has a ring tut, and wanted to see if anyone else knew who it was

Travel Fun 69 you can purchase the ring video doorbell pro at ring.com
Woooh! Representing Toronto :)
I'm new to this. Why isn't a resister being use in conjunction with the transformer?
Thank you for your video, a great reference tool for the rest of us.

I'm not too sure what the Gauge wire is since I am using the existing wires. They are very small maybe a 20 gauge approx.
@@JeffLepard thanks, I did some further research and Ring recommends 18 gauge wire for optimal performance.
Hi I bought the ring doorbell pro since last year . I took it out of country in Africa but I have problem to install it because the voltage in Senegal is 220 volt and I don't know what type of transformer or adapter to use to install it.I really need help.Thanks.
Any videos for installing into a house that does not already have an existing doorbell?
I could make a video on that easily I would use a plug in transformer in that case and just hook up the door bell. Thanks so much for watching!
Perfect and helpful video!
Thanks so much for watching!
Do you have to use that little white power box even though you upgraded your transformer.
I believe so, that is what taps into the chime box and allows your existing door chime to work.
Jeff Lepard I’ll answer my own question, as long as your transformer is at least 16 volts or after you upgrade your transformer you don’t need it. Mine works without it.
That is certainly good to know that would eliminate 1 step for sure.
If you can't find one let me know I will find a link for you.
oh,thats nice chef arabo
Thanks for watching!
Great Video Jeff! You made it easy as pie! Thanks
Thanks so much! Thanks for watching!
What if you dont have an existing doorbell. How different would this install be?
That would still be fine then you would have to run your own transformer wires or power wires from an adapter or transformer to your Ring Doorbell.
Wish I had your help with swan cameras. Ring wont help with people walking around 3 acres at night. Good and helpful video for sure.
I would like to ask you one question if it is possible. I saw your UA-cam video about ring alarm system. I want to ask if this system can be connected with wired sensors. I am asking that because I already have an old security system in my house and I have already installed sensors motion detectors etc. thank you in advance
The ring alarm cannot be connected with with wired devices. Thanks so much for watching!
This is what l should have watched first.
Nice tutorial, and you are cute. Just a little more work than I expected.
Thanks so much! Yeah sometimes it can be an easy install or a bit more work. Thanks so much for watching!
Hi Jeff , great video by the way. I can’t seem to find my transformer, checked my circuit box as well.
Any issues drilling into brick? I’ve heard it can create cracks over time. Btw Great video, Jeff! Thank you!
Yes it can just as long as you are using a good bit you shouldn't have any problems. Thanks so much for watching I appreciate it!
Hi Jeff, what is the size of the drill bit when you drill through the brick to get the wires through? I got the same issue. Thanks!
Hi jefff
I got doorbell pro. But I have issues installation. Because my existing door bell was a speaker intercom ??? Can u help??? Ho to do the installation plz
What kind of power do you have at the intercom?
Jeff Lepard I have no idea.
But Iook like low voltage csble
What if I don’t have any existing doorbell to replace a transformer on?
I like your videos
Thanks for watching!
Hi Jeff, Ring state that their doobells should be mounted 120cm from the ground.
Yes that's correct so that you get the best view from the doorbell camera. Thanks so much for watching!
@@JeffLepard why didn't you lower it?
Hey Jeff. How do I wire the doorbell chime to the newly installed transformer? Your video was obvious when it came to wiring the transformer to the Ring Doorbell. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Otherwise great video.
+Quint Yates your door bell is it mechanical or digital. Thats 1 thing i forgot to go over in the video.
Thanks for the reply Jeff. It’s a mechanical chime.
What is the purpose of the Power Kit? can I install the ring without it?
Just upgraded my rings doorbell to rings doorbell pro. But am having hard time connecting the pro to my iPhone 7 for setup. Tried rebooted my router, reinstalled the app still cannot connect the pro to my phone for setup. Any suggestions and advice is greatly appreciated
I wonder if there is a problem with the Mac Id on the ring system. I would say to contact Ring customer support and get them to check everything out they are normally helpful.
Great video! Thank you for making it.
Thanks so much for watching! I appreciate the support!
Especially the part about how you moved it over onto the brick.!!!
Jeff you didn’t put a grommet to protect wires from power to transformer
Does the doorbell need to be at eye level or can it be lower and still capture a face in video?
Nope, you can install the doorbell higher or lower as you need it. The range of view is excellent it really captures a wide view so you won't have to worry about that.
Hi Jeff. Great Video: Question; I'm also in Canada - Northern Ontario - How has the Doorbell Pro held up in winter? I hear after a certain temperature (-5?) the unit doesn't work anymore? Can you confirm?
Yes I have heard issues with the cold weather! I haven't had any issues with either the doorbell or my floodlight cam. I've had ice build up on it as well and they were still functioning!
Ted the ring video doorbell will still function but there will be little problem with the motion detection
@@JeffLepard Thank you for the reply
I'm getting a reading of 37 Volts at the door, when pressing the button I get 18 Volts....will this setup work with the ring pro???
That sounds like you have lots of power going to the door you should be fine!
Hi Jeff, is the transformer for the chime or the ring doorbell pro? I purchased the ring doorbell pro and the ring plug in chime that plugs into the wall and connects via WiFi.
Yes it is if you need to upgrade the transformer. I will be doing an updated video on this coming soon! Thanks so much for watching!
Great video, thank you!, question: Do you know what size is screw driver, I lost mine and I need to buy it in Amazon, are all screw drivers the same size. Any help will be greatly appreciated Thanks
In not too sure what the size is but the Philips screwdriver would be a small one. Maybe a 1 or 2 size.
Great video. Thank you.
Thanks so much for watching!
Excellent
I bought one this week (Netherlands), but the transformer is included nowadays 😊
That's amazing I was wondering if they ever were going to do that!
Jeff Lepard We thought the same, until we opent the box 😄 Even in the description you can’t see its included 🤔 weird! My sun is electrician and wanted to order one at work, luckily he didn’t yet 😅
I bought a transformer in preparation, so I kind of hope that mine doesn't have one included, lol
What if u change the transformer and it's still making a humming noise... what else could it be
I would then check first the door bell button to make sure the wires are not touch each other or crossing each other somewhere. Then check the actual chime unit on the wall. You could use a tester and see what voltage you are getting. It's possible you may need to change the chime unit itself.
I changed the chime to
I wonder if something is going on with the new transformer? I'm going to look into that.
How in the world do I find the transformer in my house??
Cool Video!!! 👍🏼
+Iwonka Thanks for watching! We have to get your cooking skills on the channel to show people!
I would like to see a ring doorbell pro installed without an existing doorbell
That's a great video idea! I will keep that in mind and I'm sure I will be doing one of those!
@@JeffLepard Hi from Toronto! I would like this too, please. I would like to tie into a pre-existing exterior AC outlet. You can use my house to do your video, and I will record!
amazing thank for sharing chef arabo
I’m scared of dealing with electrical stuff now cuz I was putting up my Christmas lights and I just didn’t get shocked, I got electrocuted !! Omg so painful ! half my body was paralyzed for like less then 20 mins ! So scary dealing with wires now lol
+Fun Size Production OMG, when did that happen. How did that happen?
Great video...
Thanks so much! More Ring videos on its way!
Can you install it without a chime my house doesn’t have a doorbell at all
Yes you can you don't have to use the Chime it will still alert your phone and you can also use a ring chime if you want.
Jeff Lepard I donot think that I have Wires for my doorbell what should I do
