    Hey man, just a heads up. The water from an established tank isn't really what kickstarts the cycle. You have to use some surface area from the established tank, preferably some of the filter media. Beneficial bacteria isn't really suspended in the water, it's chilling in the gravel or in the filter media.

      Tom D yes absolutely that’s a great point, we just use the water because it is already established with no chlorine.

    This is amazing, my danios are too cramped in 10 gallons. I was going to buy a 30 gallon, but a fifty dollar setup sure beats paying $500. Thanks!

    Very cool but I would be worried about the plastic eventually forming a leak or some of it actually leaching into the water after long term use. It's a cool idea but I'd be cautious.

    I have a similar set up for my turtle tank. Found about the max for those is about 25ish gallons before bowing gets to major, and rubbermaid is for greater amounts of water. Still, it's a fairly cheap way to set up a tank if you don't have a massive budget to go with.
    Pretty much went this route after buying a 50 gallon tank from petco that ended up falling to pieces after filling it up, and having to emergency transfer

    If I were to use this to house a goldfish, could it be suitable for a long period until I save up enough money for a full size aquarium? I want to be able to have the fish, but it will take me time to save up the money to keep it in a glass/acrylic tank. Would this work for about a 40 gallon or 20 gallon clear bin? Are there any drawbacks to doing this vs. the glass tanks when it comes to the fishes care/health? I would like to give them the best life I can, it would be really great if you responded soon!!

    • @HOUSEBILLINGS
      @HOUSEBILLINGS  5 років тому +5

      +The Boldster Glad you reached out! Most clear storage bins are labeled as ‘food grade’ make sure you check that whatever you are using is labeled as that. As long as you use proper filtration and follow the guidelines for proper goldfish care, your fish should be absolutely safe in a 20-40 gallon clear storage bin, and live a long healthy life as they would in a glass aquarium! The only other thing would add is rigging up some type of brace for the top of the bin to prevent the sides from bowing out when it is filled with water. Maybe with wood or a couple pieces of pvc!

    • @theoriginalboldster
      @theoriginalboldster 5 років тому +1

      @@HOUSEBILLINGS thanks! Would putting the lid on work if i were to drill holes in it? Or do you think I should leave the lid open to allow air flow? I have pets that shed, so I've found that leaving my bettas tank lid on keeps it out, because there is a lot of fur in the air. Do you think if i took some duct tape and taped one edge of the tub over the lid, and onto the other it would help hold? I'm sorry for all the questions, but I just want to make sure I'm prepared if I do get the fish. What filture do you reccomend?

    • @HOUSEBILLINGS
      @HOUSEBILLINGS  5 років тому +2

      +The Boldster these are all great questions dont apologize at all! Putting a cover on should be no problem at all as long as you have good air flow IN the tank with a nice bubbler. I always use sponge filters they are by far the best form a filtration because you get both mechanical and biological filtration out of it. Also you get the added air flow from the bubbles it produces.

And you can modify it with anything you need, like adding a spigot to the bottom of one side to easily drain it for cleaning, or even linking multiple together for a super tank or segregated sanctuaries... Anyone tried this long term yet that could offer some pointers?

      If it’s a sturdy plastic it should be okay just try to avoid moving it as much as possible if you are worried about that or take the heavier objects out before you do. The only reason it should crack is if it is knocked hard. It should be fine :)

    I have a similar filter but I thought it was too strong... is the water supposed to move that much and add this much resistance to the fish?

    • @HOUSEBILLINGS
      @HOUSEBILLINGS  4 роки тому

      Hi Darla thanks for reaching out! Water movement def depends on the type of fish. Some fish LOVE having strong currents to swim against.. some rather almost no movement at all. What type of fish do you have

    I wounder if maybe the ones that are only kinda half clear would help with stress.
    They sell ones with clear lids and kinda foggy containers.
    That was the fishies wont be stressed as much but I can still see them

      +Queen Of Memes hey thanks for the comment. It is sort of like a regular aquarium with clear glass, the fish dont seem to get stressed at all. I have found when we use bins or pools that the fish cant see out of they can sometimes get a little nervous when people approach.

    i’ve never owned fish before and wanna try this for a permanent tank, what do you mean when you say water parameters should be kept in the right range? And how would you keep them in the right range?

    • @PageShearling
      @PageShearling 4 роки тому +2

      Water parameters refer to the levels of ammonia, chlorine, nitrites, nitrates, water harnesses, PH and alkalinity. You can test for these things with a test kit you buy from a fish supply store and I know that Petsmart does water tests for free. Always use declorinater in tap water or let it sit for 24 hours so the chlorine can gas off. Things like chlorine and ammonia can kill your fish.

    • @tehutimes1
      @tehutimes1 4 роки тому

      @@PageShearling "water hardness" not water harness. rain water stored in clean containers blended with dechlorinated water can be used also.For VeeVooo start with guppies, danios, or paradise gouramis as basic fish to get started in fishkeeping.

    I recently wanted some fish and saw that the tanks were expensive. Is the DIY bin tank only for temporary use or can it be permanent? :D

    • @HOUSEBILLINGS
      @HOUSEBILLINGS  4 роки тому +4

      Hi Zoe. The plastic bin can absolutely be used for a good period of time, just make sure you are doing regular water changes. You will also want to make sure to support it properly on the sides, over time it can start to bow out.

    • @Blackpool2044
      @Blackpool2044 4 роки тому +1

      It all depends on the size of the tank or plastic box for a tank of 64l you are looking at £100 or less maybe more for all the equipment but if you are shore on keeping fish then I'd say get a tank simple because it looks pretty and it's more suited to the job but a plastic box is fine for permanent use I have one as a medical tank Aso make shore it has a food safe logo on it as some plastics can leek toxins in to the water

    • @HOUSEBILLINGS

      Heaters are perfectly fine, I would try to use the suction cups or put something between the heater and the walls and floor of the tank. It wouldnt be strong enough to melt it right away but maybe over time could do damage

    I can make a bet at that plastic aquarium eventually imploded because they're not meant to hold water and eventually the water starts pushing the plastic outward which then makes the whole tank implode outwords
