- In this video, I'll show you how to turn a spare android or iOS device into a very useful and easy to use car tracker.

Good idea! I've been looking for a purpose built vehicle tracker, but most of them have their drawbacks. The battery powered trackers don't have enough battery time to make them useful on multiple day trips. The hardwired trackers are somewhat complicated to install and they also don't have enough battery back up time. And some have expensive monthly subscription rates. I'm going to give this "cell phone tracker" a try. Thanks!
and don't forget to turn off your phone ringer...
Even if you don't do the tracker thing it was worth watching for the piggyback lead, hadn't seen one of those before!
You can actually do this without paying for a top up every now and then. Three do a data sim where you get 200mb of data for free every month without the need to top up.
wow you're right, thanks!
Not for smartphones
@@markdrury4287 Works for me on my android phone?
Hey Torque Steer, Do you notice any battery drain using this method? From my understanding a phone shouldn't draw enough power to drain a battery, especially when you splice it in through a constant circuit. Thankyou for the video!
I was thinking about doing this for having tracking on a motorcycle in case it gets stolen.

Great video, Luke. 👍
Is there any app or way that would be able to do the same but... with one and very imporant additional option - to send an alarm notification in case my car is stolen (the geolocation is changed) - either by data but even better by calling my phone number?
You can use IFTTT for this. If the vehicle exits a perimeter around your property it can send a txt message. I had this setup so that when my wife left work for home, I got an alert so I knew to have her dinner ready for her when she arrived.
@@JohnHastie Thanks, you're right, it's to try in fact any automation app.... so simple...
there's an app called life 360 which would also work just as well as google maps
Hi, I know that this is an old post, but I have a question. We have a family member that takes a public transit vehicle to their day program each day. Sometimes the driver takes a long route or gets lost or takes a detour which delays the arrival. I wish to track the route by perhaps putting an old smartphone in her purse so at the end of the day it shows us on a map the exact route taken. I don't need it to be a live feed as the old smartphone won't have a SIM card. Is there an app you recommend for this?
Hey, thanks for great video I just want to know If I make phone charging constant, will it drain off my car battery. my phone have 5000 Mah battery.
Isn't it better to connect to a temporary live so that it only charges up the phone while the engine is on?
I use my iPhone and find my friends on a motorcycle which charges only when the ignition is on via a USB cigarette adaptor so easy anyone can do it
why? the phone barely uses any power when it has the screen off
Leaving the phone on a constant circuit will work but there is some cons to it. Leaving your phone constant charge cycle will degrade the phone battery much faster. Once your battery is beyond holding a charge the phone will have to be manually turned on.
If you put your phone an "ignition run wire" the battery should last long enough to stay on while the car is off unless it is off for a very long period of time.
Factory reset your tracker phone and remove all bloat ware and disable any unnecessary other apps like clock, calculator or news apps. Only allow the bare minimum to reduce battery drainage, also turn your screen brightness almost off until you need to look at it. This should help your phones standby time last for days. Plenty of time to find your car.
hello do you know if tracker uses/needs mobile data to function?
Yes, you will need to find a data only sim card as the video stated. Your phone will not use much of the data to report it's GPS location.
Just install and hide a fuel cut of switch as will as hide a battery cut of switch, then they wont even have a chance to steal your car. Plus its free once paid for as the will be no monthly costs.
It is best to hide tracker under plastics on the back. I have glued mine to behind of the panel. Impossible to find without stripping all interior and plastic covers. Before they do find it I will break few jaws.
Very nice
Also this is to track my campervan...so I would need to buy a "roaming sim card " that connects to the best available network....
I like this idea but need to figure a work around here in the desert. If you leave your phone in your car in the day it gets so hot that your phone will malfunction
Don't put it in your car, put it under your car in a sealed container or space with no walls in direct sunlight. Also stay away from the exhaust and engine.
not really ideal.. battery replacement will cost more than the phone/tracker! ideally, you need to use a discharge prevention, some sort of voltage shut off ;)
@wendy Aiden gtfo
a phone with screen of doesn't use enough energy to ever deplete a car battery
@@leolego2 Agreed if your not using the screen and you disable or remove all non useful app's for a bare minimum build your phone should last for days on a signal charge allowing you to place it on a "ignition run wire" so the battery will have some drain before you start charging it again.
But it only allows you 24 hrs of tracking than you have to resend the share location steps again
The problem with this is the piggyback fuse is way to obvious, many thieves will check the fuse panel. There must be a sneakier way than this to piggyback power somewhere else in the car.
I absolutely agree with you. The thieves who stole my ride recently pulled all the leads to the fuse box. It’s best to find a constant on inside a panel somewhere they won’t waste time looking for, and connect your inline fuse from there-if you even need a fuse.
Hi, Could I simply plug the USB into an existing cigarette lighter socket for it to work?
Does the 12v lighter socket work when the car is turned off?
Yes you can do that. It would not be very hidden from would be thief's but if you don't care about that it would work.
In extreme hot weather what about that lithium battery will fire the car
Nowadays they sell gps trackers and all you do is attach it to your car comes with a magnet. Cheap and easy.
You would ether have to pay a monthly fee for live tracking OR you would have to retrieve the tracker to see were it has been. This method you will pay for a cellular sim card but only pay for the data you use witch isn't much at all for live tracking.
It's not cheap because the monthly fees on a lot of them are insane. Plus this way you can add features easily.
Does this tracking on Google maps show real time movement with speed?
I want to fix an old mobile to my motorcycle
this worked great. unfortunately what I didn't want to find out actually happened. I placed it in my girlfriend's car and she was out with my step brother doing something that I don't want to think about. I'm sure you can figure it out. she is not a good person to me, but oh well what can I do? nothing right? I'll just go walk off a bridge.
Nah brother your worth more than that, Don't let that crap get you down. That just means she's for the streets. Keep on trucking until you find the right gal! Salem Aleikum brother
Why can`t you grub speak English ?
That kills the car battery
it does not, very low power.
Factory reset the phone, remove or disable all unneeded apps and reduce screen timer to minimum as well as dropping screen brightness to almost nothing.
My car was tracked earlier today with the help of Chasetools on Instagram. Thanks
