  • I finally did it guys! Rented highly modified cheap chinese cross enduro Motorcycle in Pokhara Nepal after the first try didn’t go as planned since the police confiscated the dirt bike after literally 2 minutes (video: • Police confiscated my ... ) anyway, no we have a real adventure and go right into the mountains, but first I almost ended the trip before it started because I got way to excited and crashed it on the first dirt road breaking the gear lever😬 this wouldn’t have happened on electric bike for sure. Let’s do this 🤙🏼

@@MarcTravels She had a Honda CRF-300 Rally. This is a made in China budget semi off road bike by Honda, based on a very old Honda XL-250 engine that upgraded to an water cooled engine. The target users are people who want to have fun rides in the weekend on road as wel as light terrain like unpaved roads, and can't or not want to spend the bigger price tag of the competition enduros like KTM, TM, Husqvarna, Kawasaki KLR, Yamaha Tenere or the famous Honda XR series.
The CRF-300 has the name of the world famous Honda CR series two stroke competition motocross bikes and the CR-F four stroke versions of it, but has noting to do with this bikes other then the name. It is just an pump up the sales trick.
The CRF-300 and CRF-300 Rally with a slightly larger fuel tank has an empty weight of 148 kilo's and a single cilinder 286cc four stroke which deliver 24 hp at 8500 rpm and moderate toque. That are not offroad specs at all. Even the frame and suspension are not for offroad use. If you take a real CR or CR-F motocross bike, they are way different like comparing Eve with an electric bicycle.
The sadly no longer produced XR series fit the job better. I am closing in to 60 now, back in my day if you wanted to ride rally's, you needed to build your own bike, there was nothing off the shelf like today. I used an 1989 Honda XR-250R for that. ( i can mail pictures if you like) That 1989 XR-250 was a single cilinder, four valve, four stroke, high compression, kick start only engine of 249cc real displacement outputting 32hp at 7800 rpm. And that with a ready to use weight of 124 kilo. Put this next to the CRF-300 specs.......
Noraly is, despite her years of experience, a moderate rider. This is because she is not open to suggestions of experienced (competition) rally and motorcross riders. She falls a lot. A lot, nearly every video. This is due lack of power and the use weird old myths like deflating your tires when go in terrain, which is actually very dangerous. This myth comes from the early days of terrain motorcycling, the first baja races and military use. We talk world war one when motorcycles still used to look like a bicycle with an engine. But the tires those times were way different then today. It were basically wider bicycle tires those days with speeds you could "out-horse" in the fields.
If you deflate your modern tires, you create a kind of hoover craft. The bike start to float and the suspension does not get the right feedback. This means the front will slide away much easier. This with a heavy, low power, low torque bike and you will fall. You lose grip on the tires and don't have the power to push through or lift the front end. Its a true miracle she didn't run her tires off the rims yet. Marc you know there is a writing on the wall of every tire that says the correct air pressure, and that should be used at all times. But i was not able to get this in her head, she even banned me for that.
Noraly is afraid of big thumpers, even when she rode the baja rally back in Mexico and experienced first hand that 450 rally bike ride a lot better in heavy terrain as her own CRF-300. Because that bike had a lot more power on a lot less weight. She does not rev her CRF-300, and with only 24hp on a massive 8500 rpm, what is left if you "moped" around on hardly 5000 rpm. Well, probably about 5, 6 or 7 hp. 8 on a good day. A boy riding a 50cc two stroke Honda MTX enduro moped who dare to rev it, also generate about 5, 6 hp and would keep up with her. Yes she rev on the tarmac, but there you can calm down the revs to safe fuel. Rev it in terrain for max torque and power for a better and safer ride.
Nothing wrong with that, but then the XR-600 with an Acerbis 24 liter front and 10 liter rear fuel tank (rally set up) would be a better choice. Let's look into that bike. 600cc single air cooled four valve, four stroke engine putting out 48hp on 5500 rpm,...oepsy. Max rpm 7200. CRF-300 reminder: 24hp on 8500 rpm, max rpm about 10.000 like a two stroke.... So with Noraly's "mopetting" around on low rpm, she she exactly hit the sweet spot on a XR-600. Think about that. Oh this, the weight of the XR-600: 134 kilo dry CRF reminder: 148 kilo. So with the rally setup she would ride the same wight with fuel and and a lot more torque en hp. She has overhauled the CRF-300 quite a lot.
Resume: the CRF-300 is not made for daily long distance heavy terrain use. The XR is.

@@MarcTravels Mustang will be a challenge. The road from Pokhara to Baglung is paved. From Baglung to Tatopani there are two options to Beni. There is a low road on the east side of the river which is unpaved and under construction so this time of year it can be muddy. The high road on the west side is mostly concrete to Beni. After Beni there is a lot of newer pavement, but a few sections could be extremely muddy with big ruts. I ride that road 8-12 times a year and while it is getting better, this is not a good time to ride on the bike you have. Just before Ruptse falls there is a 5-8km long section that can be far harder than anything you rode on the Crossfire. Once you get above Ruptse falls the rest of the roadway is mostly paved or good gravel. Between Marpha and Kagbeni the road is 90% gravel. There is only one very rough section before After Tukuche, but it's only 200 meters long although very rocky. To be honest, this is a perfect road for a Himalayan. We take hundreds of riders into Mustang and much, much rougher areas on Himalayans. They're perfect for this region.

I said exactly the same to Noraly, her fitness must be off the charts. I used to do trail riding and it is absolutely exhausting, and I used to be super fit back then. It all came to end when I dropped the bike on rocks at 5mph, I couldn't stand up but didn't know why? My friends wheeled the bike under me and I rode 30 miles home with my knee the size of a football, a friend wheeled it out from under me and I got in his car. Off to hospital, X rays, broken knee and 9 weeks in plaster plus physio as my leg was locked solid. That was almost 40 years ago and it still lets me know that it isn't quite right. Hey ho! Stuck to road bikes after that.
