Broooo, this is the video I've been looking for all my life LOL / You are my hero / Absolute Game Changer / Can't thank you enough. I've been Monkeying around fabricating connectors for 30 years. I had ni idea these were this easy!!!
Definitely helped out, especially WireCares builder! I was trying to find out how it all works and what parts I need to set up a DT series circuit -- big thanks for the rundown!
Great job. Nice to find another 'super-fan' of these Deutsch connectors. I discovered them while working with our Aggregate plant electricians working on Caterpillar front end loaders. I've used them on multiple motorcycle projects. I have the same four way crimper. It works great. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Definitely the way to go for any exterior wire connection.👍 The upgradability and flexibility is priceless. THAT'S why the regular parts stores don't carry these! I'm using two four pin sets for a bumper reflector insert that has LED backup lights.
Thank you man, this really got me up to speed and answered the questions I had. Edit: I am going to give the connector a try on my light bar. Then on a later stage I will invest in the tool and get a set of plugs.
Agree. After fought with Superseals like AMP (especially their lovely small yellow gaskets - that usually are dropped and loosed...) these Deutsch are just awesome
Gday Zach, It’s been a while since Ive used a Deutsch Connector. Thanks for the reminder on the tips and tricks. Off now to fix the wife’s Audi’s damaged gearbox loom. Should keep me in the good books for a while. Cheers 😁👍🍻
I've been using these for years... and even sometimes when I'm done using them on a wiring loom.. motorcycle or racing ... I just put them back in my box kit for re-use in the future. 😀
Just wanted to send a note ...... i want to tell you that i am not a ford owner and never have been but i follow your because i love the passion and the true quality of your work ...... great job and keep doing amazing work
Dude, I can't thank you enough. I've got a CAN bus wiring project for a marine application and this video was perfect for where I am on this project. So helpful. If you had affiliate links for the products you mentioned, I'd click on 'em and buy there so you'd get the commission! (Having said that, the fact that you DON'T have affiliate links makes your recommendations more meaningful) Thanks again. I've seen the Deutsch connectors, had questions, and you answered them all. Thumbs up!
Thanks. Iv been fn around with trying these other connectors all day trying to get them to work, but I'll try these instead. The rigid lights I'm installing have these but only on the harness side. The lights have bare wires, so I need to add connectors plus another wire for the back light trigger.. rigid 360 series amber spots.
More info on your connecting tool? Also, crimping smaller than 20 ga wire is a PIA. I've learned to tin the wire with solder to build it up a bit before crimping.
Great video! I want to add some led running board lights on my f250. Is there a plug configuration I could use to tap into an existing hot wire and ground? My wire harness is under my rear sill plate on the interior of my truck. I don't want to use one of those cheap wire taps that always seem to fail after a period of time.
I work on komatsu construction equipment and they use them on everything. If they can live on a dozer then they can live on a rig. Nice thing about them if you break them like you said super easy to D pin and repin. If i was your I'd just buy a huge kit because they should come with the closed sockets already!
video is from a while back so you might not see this but i recommend getting a heatshrink label printer, wonderful for knowing what does what down the line
I have a pair of 4way square crimpers for wire ferrels. Wonder if they would work? Squeeze the wire into a square for screw down terminals. They come as the same round barrels. Doesnt look like it would hurt on the back side.
My boat already has two deutch connectors on it for the dash but they made the cable too short to remove the dash insert to enough to comfortably service/inspect it. This video helped me understand what to do to make a longer cable, thank you. Also can you post a link to the closed barrel pins you use?
Cool deal! So I guess my only question wld be which side goes on your vehicles wiring harness & which side goes on the other? Like female & male. I'm assuming the female goes to your vehicles & then the male on the other? Which in my case is an oxygen sensor. It tk me a few tries w/butt connectors b4 I fnd out about these Deutsch connectors. I do have open barrel bcuz that's what they come w/when u order them or I guess unless ur more specific like this guy was & get the closed barrel or whatever they're called. I've heard weatherproof or something like that they're also called. I cld be off on the name, but weather something. Anyways tho idk much about all this stuff. I'm just now starting to learn bcuz I was forced to w/my vehicle breaking dwn & haveing to fix it myself. I hope this works & it looks more promising than those butt connectors & heat shrink sleeves & all that crap! I def recommend also getting a crimping tool. They say u can use needle nose pliers on the open barrels. I didn't try that, but I almost did until I decided to go ahead & buy a $15 crimping tool w/cutting & wire stripping off eBay, but yes I def recommend the right crimp tool for any of these barrels lol. U want to get the job done right! Great video tho! I really enjoyed it! The clicking parts lol. Yeap I'm def going to be listening for that haha! Thanks again tho! Great video!
So, I took the bumper off of my 2013 Mustang GT and that ripped the backup camera wire. That wire had no plugs and runs from the rear bumper to all the way in cockpit. I'm thinking to reconnect the ripped wirr through a harness like this, so next time when I take off my bumper it won't be a problem.
wow, really informative... just bought a 1988 F350 its sat for quite awhile, low mileage, 0 rust, but wires have really aged, and connectors have become brittle and tabs break when i disconnect. question is... the amperage that pins carry?
Good video man... you got yourself a subscriber. There is a more expensive, and higher quality crimper for the close barrel plugs too if you want to up the quality even more. It’s about $140-200 depending on the model.
Ya there are better ones for sure. But the Deutsch HDT-48-00 crimp tool (for solid barrels) is $329 on Amazon, over $400 on Walmart. The one he used is $32.79 on Amazon now - 10x less! That's a big difference. I don't mind spending for good tools but not 10x as much.
@@rcanoli99 I have these cheap ones as well, I don’t like them at all. You can’t fine tune the crimp and you need 3 separate crimpers for each size. IWISS makes the same high end tool for less than $200, all sizes, and with a go no-go gauge. It’s basically a clone of the $500 tool.
Open barrel is better because when you're putting tension on the cable it applies tension to the plastic sleeve and not just the metal wires - which can damage the connection. Most oem cars plugs use open barrel obviously
Thanks for the video. What are you using for wire covering? I saw that you left the wires exposed for the gauge set, but what would you use to cover a bundle of wires that go in the engine compartment?
In these harsh environments, they are quite simply bomb proof. Sure there are other connectors which offer this sort of ruggedness & some are even more tough, like milspec connectors, but they are expensive as are the tools....
Zachary - I really like your video, do you have any advice about how to daisy chain the cables so I want to have two wires into a single pin (one wire in and one wire out) ? Do you j just use a pin for a bigger wire size and stick two wires into it ? Thanks Robert
Good video, just a couple of points... 1. i'm with you on the barrel contacts and crimper, very easy to use, way easier than open barrel terminals. 2. you're not showing a true Deutsch connector on Amazon, those are knockoffs. I've used too, didn't realize they're knockoffs, but not using again, don't trust the integrity of the raw materials or their mfg controls. 3. The true Deutsch connectors are a little pricey, like an 8 pin connector kit is about $22, and I need about 10 of em.
I noticed the "garbage" pins crimp both the wire and the sleeve in place, while the easy pin only crimps the wire, which could potentially slide the tip away from the sleeve with pushing and pulling. Makes me wonder if it's trading ease of use for security, or is it a non issue..
So the very thin video wire I need to splice together has wire shielding. Is there a tool and Deutsch plug to handle that? I did identify the Deutch connector it has on the ends.
Awesome video! Everything someone needs to know to dive in. And the Irwin strippers.......I'm shook I didn't have those 30 years ago. I'll never look at the tool aisle the same way again.
Hey buddy, Do you know if the IWD-16 tool can be used for DTP range which uses size 12 crimps? Or is it just better to get IWD-12 for size 12 crimps. If I do buy the IWD-12 tool DTP connectors, then I wonder if it can be used on DT connectors
I couldnt find that crimp tool on amazon, do they still sell it?????? I've got a 54 chevy truck with some jacked up wiring. This is the stuff I want to use!!!
The commentary in this video was tough to get through, but when he finally shows you how to assemble the connectors, it was really helpful. I even order the barrel pins and crimper.
5:35 Actually, you should not but the closed barrel connector up against the insulation. There should be a bit of wire showing....say .025-.050" The way you did it could add stress
Yup, and he'd also fail QA inspection if they can't see the wire through the inspection hole. It's the only way to prove that the conductor is all the way to the crimp point of the pin.
Zach, great video on the Deutsch connectors. Say, I have look all over Amazon for the closed Barrel Terminal Crimper that you use (IWD-16) but am not finding it. Is that still available?
This guys genuine love for deutsch connectors is great
I just wanna know how he feels about their interchangeability.
It’s almost 3am and I am totally excited to look into Deutsch plugs. Wanting to do a full wire overhaul on my jeep. Thank you!!!
I need this energy in my life
The steadiness and visual acuity wouldn't hurt much, either.

@wiltofly
He ready has a very good crimping tool
Thanks for this, just doing my truck and wanted to do these connectors

thanks. bought one a kit a while back and it looked a bit much, but this just showed how simple it was to use.

I have the closed barrel set up and thought needed the open jaw crimper. Now i can order my deutsch connectors and pins.
Wow, thank very much. I even ordered your IWISS 1424 crimper as well.
You do amazing work on what you do.
When I get my excursion, I will be giving you a shout, because I want you to do the interior / dash swap
Ty bro. I didn’t know it was that easy. I was buying them as assembled already.

Thanks again. I've seen the Deutsch connectors, had questions, and you answered them all. Thumbs up!
@Matt Thats great to know. I always use grease on automotive fittings or boat trailer type stuff, but awesome to see some real world testing.
Thank you for this video. This answered all my questions.
Good instructions. Thumbs up from sweden.
Use these connectors all the time on heavy equipment. They are awesome for sure
I was looking for a quick guide not a long i recomand video. Thank you for trying to help
I like your style man. Nice work.
Thanks for sharing man! Appreciate it
Great vid, good info, fantastic insights! Thanks!
Everything i wanted to know about deutsch. Thanks!
im doing a standalone ecu conversion using these plugs for my trigger & coil setup, good Video
You can also get blanking pins for the holes you’re not using.
Just pushes in where the pin would be to maintain water tightness.
Man you use this type of stuff with a trigger controller and you’ve got the cleanest set up around.
Thanks man for this. I was always so intimidated by these for some weird dumb reason. 😂 i will definitely be using this method from now on.
Great tutorial! Awesome explanation.

Great video mate!!

@Heffalompen I’ve had a few… but the best value was the IWISS HD-2612
@Heffalompen It depends on the size range of the wires you are working on... 26-12 pretty much takes care of most automotive sizes IMO.
Appreciate the shared knowledge
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏🙏 👍 so much for posting this
Great tutorial
I was looking to see if you knew where I can buy them in bulk if you had any ideas hope to hear from you. Thank you.

Very useful thanks.
Awesome vid
Can the open barrel and the stamped barrel pins be used in the same plugs? and do you have a video on how to crimp the stamped pins. great video
Thanks for great vid and link to the crimper, one question, where do you get the pins from?
Thanks. I'm all set🎉
In these harsh environments, they are quite simply bomb proof. Sure there are other connectors which offer this sort of ruggedness & some are even more tough, like milspec connectors, but they are expensive as are the tools....

great video...what was the crimper for the pins?

Thanks for sharing. Does the plug requires pin size (20-16 or 16-14) to match or the holes are universal? Cheers
What are the ones you've got there with the flanges? They're exactly what I need. Thanks.

I'm sold. However, links in description would be nice.

After looking more I think I see that crimper lumped in with a connector kit for $78.99.
For 14.16.18 gage, contact size 16, IWD-16

what about changing over a multipin connector up to 12/14 pins to these Deutsch plugs ..?
Where do you get your barrels and pins from? Any idea where I can get the crimping tool from? It’s out of stock on Amazon.
Have you had any trouble getting the pin retainers to fit?
Where can I buy the closed barrel pins and Deutsch connectors?
Awesomeness
