Giving Turtanator love is honestly such a pleasant surprise. I remember back in the day his reveal trailer dropping on my birthday and falling in love with the funky guy.
@@turkoositerapsidi Nope. In Japan, dragonflies represent victory since they're great hunters and can't fly backwards (no retreat), they're considered as nostalgic since they're very common around rice paddies, and they can represent the soul of a passed loved one (which is why they're common in art). Here in Sweden (and in neighbouring countries) they are considered to be tools of evil; either being used to spin magic, sew the eyes together of sleeping people, or to weigh a man's soul for the devil to inflict misery upon them.
This is the one time that a mid-video shoutout segment has actually sold me on whats being shouted out, its awesome that you've managed to work on such a cool project (speaking of which, the designs in that game are incredible, I don't know what designs you contributed but they're amazing regardless)
I love your analysis on what makes a good Mega design. One of the issues I've often seen with fan-megas is that some people often don't seem to understand that there's a pattern or process that they follow, and so they make the mistake of just overdesigning a pokemon by adding a bunch of uneccessary things to them. I love your Mega Turtinator and Flygon designs! They capture what makes a Mega design good, and they feel like the could actually be in the games! Especially the Mega Flygon. If we do get it in Z-A and it looks at least similar to that, I might use it on my team!
Bro congrats on designing the creatures for the steam game coming out. Really goes to show how much your Pokémon videos have been able to cultivate your own work as well 🔥🔥
as someone who’s dipping my toes into making my own fakemon region, this series has been SO helpful !! there were a lot of moments in this video where things started to click for me. i love megas, so i wanted to include them in my region, and i think now i can !!
I've noticed that megas typically go to a theme of "turn it up to 11". They make pokemon more extra. Tons of megas have spikes everywhere, and even with cuter ones like slowbro or audino, slowbro takes the shell and makes it massive while giving audino an over-the-top sparkly appearance.
It's cool that you made a mega for turtonator, but while I was watching the video I was hoping that you would also make a drampa one since they are both counterparts, even so the megas for turtonator and flygon look incredible
The reason I believe for why Flygon was never bug type is because by gen 3, Bug was still the defacto 'bad' type, and is the antithesis of Dragon, which was made to deliberately be powerful. This is reflected in the fact that replacing the Ground type with the Bug type would make Flygon worse, even today. The only positive for swapping the types is no longer being quad weak to ice, but the drawbacks of losing one of the best offensive types in the game for the WORST offensive type, as well as the poor defensive trade, is just not worth it.
If you’ve been playing pokemon go, watching the anime, or engaging outside of the core series of games, mega evolutions haven’t been made defunct. it’s interesting to see that popular fan consensus on mega evolutions is the narrative that they were dead rather than not preserved in the core series for about 5 years
I love your mega flygon design even though it's different than what I was thinking up. I was thinking abt leaning more into the ground type than bug. Flygon gets bigger kite wings that are more suited for gliding, and it uses its tail to spin sand traps in the ground. When something is stuck it uses its large size to trap the creature in the trap. Basically the inverse of real antlions.
How competitively viable would Bug/Dragon type be though? I feel like nobody would use it over regular Flygon, since it would lose its immunity to Earthquake (because it no longer has levitate), and gain multiple new weaknesses (albeit losing 4x ice weakness). It would lose its stab bonus for ground type moves (it would also lose its immunity to sandstorms, though that's less important). Maybe the stat boost + tinted lens would make it worth it though. And I could see it being a strong U-Turn user...
A bug resist ground tho. Maybe it would help if bug type would gets new resistance to dark and psychic. Also bug does already resist grass when ground is weak to it. But You do have a strong point. Maybe flygon mega could have a new ability to it where it would be immune to sand, but could also refer the lens.
I think losing a ground immunity isn't so bad since it still resists it, bug dragon isn't so bad as an offensive typing with tinted lens. I think with the right stats being moved around to the right places, it could definitely be good. (see mega beedrill, though for mega flygon it should be a bit less min-maxed)
@turkoositerapsidi Funnily enough, there is another dragonfly who would probably be fine with becoming bug/dragon and fits even more than flygon. Yanmega is a bug flying type based on a dragonfly and whom already looks somewhat draconic. It would also lose an earthquake immunity, but bug/flying is terrible. This does not mean I want flygon to not gain a mega, nor for mega yanmega to be the only bug/dragon type, but it is interesting that there is a pokemon who fits the typing more.

That Microsoft Office Shapes Mega exhibition was awesome! I had a couple ideas for Mega Evolutions, but designing them was hard. Thank you so much for the tips!
These designs are amazing dude, I love Flygon themselves a lot without mega, and if the mega looks as good as your design, then I'm off for a Flygon hyperfixation. Great video n0rt!
A problem I’ve seen in a lot of fan made megas is, instead of just expanding on the design, they just throw in new ideas for fun, with no basis in the original design. I saw one idea for a mega Zoroark where they just, made it electric type? For some reason? And when Subjectively’s fan game had a mega design contest in their discord, I saw someone redesign the burnt popcorn Pokémon to be covered in like chocolate sauce and stuff. It was really bizarre, because it’s not expanding upon the original idea, it’s just making a new idea with no regard for the original design
I really appreciate you analyzing shapes and themes and all of that here. I honestly thought it was just make it spiker, bigger and digimon with the Megas. 😅
i love the mega turtonator all it needs is a dex entry saying the spikes are so large it falls over and then it caves its spine inward making the dent its so pained it can't move or think about anything but mindless violence
I think about this "The spikes on it's back grew as it mega evolved making it go quadruped, it now packs a powerful explosion that when it detonates it takes it's life away from it."
i need Mega Beheeyem asap (i dont even love that pokemon that much but i think it would have a neat and unique mega) … OMG TURTONATOR!!! it’s on my bingo card (wishlist) for megas!
mega beheeyem could have so much design potential, like what if it just became like, a giant UFO or something lol. Could even open up for some new lore, like if beheeyem and magnezone both got a mega in that vein, could introduce some interesting lore concepts about like, rival alien races that both want Earth for some reason
I always thought of Megas as simply taking the original pokemon and over-designing it, which stands out quite a lot in pokemons general style of simple and effective designs, But over-designing isn't quite accurate, since the actually do become somewhat more focused in their visuals, so it really just applies to the details... But bringing up shapes and silhouettes is really interesting as a perspective. There may be more details, but they don't disruipt the silhouette, as some of them actually become simpler silhouettes overall.
Even though tinted lens is a really good ability, if it was the type show in the video, it should have Sand Rush or Sand Veil since those abilities have the added effect of being immune to Sandstorm's damage. Maybe they'll rework sandstorm since it no longer is a parallel to hail (which is now snow)
Would you ever consider doing the same kind of video for Gigantamax forms since they are the only other form changing gimmick? I’m quite bad at conceptualising and making Megas and Gmax forms so this deep dive into what makes a Mega a Mega really helped with understanding their design philosophies
It's so funny seen people saying the last seconds of the trailer confirmed megas Like guys It's kalos... the region where megas were introduced of course megas are coming back XD
I didn't know you made some of the designs in kadomon, I had seen a couple of roguelike channels play it the art was awesome, and the game seemed really fun.
Flygon Will never be bug dragon because if you look at every single mega evolution only the second type gets changed or added (gyrados goes from water flying to water dark) Flygon is ground dragon so only the dragon type will change (or stay the same)
The mega turtanator is perfect, really glad I’m not the only one who wants to see mega’s of Pokémon after gen 6. Really hope mega flygon isn’t the first bug dragon tho, mega altaria is the only dragon fairy and we can’t use it in any current games.
It's just a hunch, but I think absol gaining wings was meant more to lean into it's Chuuni nature. It's very much desigbed from the ground up as an edgy middle-school oc. So much like any other sephiroth with the numbers on it's katana filed off, why not give it wings?
Another important aspect to Mega Pokemon-designs for me is that they generally try to keep the general "shape of the body" or at least aspects of it intact... which seems contradictory to your point about Mega Pokemon adding strong shapes, but both actually coexist. Taking Manectric as an example, it added a strong shape in form of its mane growing across its back into the shape of a giant lightning-bolt... but outside of that, Manectrics shape remained largely the same, as did its size. Going to one of the Pokemon that changed its body-shape the most, Swampert got super swole, and its standing with a hunched back compared to its original design which on the contrary probably let its lower back hang a bit more, clearly on 2 legs instead of the more quadruped approach of regular Swampert... but if you deflated those muscles just a bit, it'd reveal a very Swampert-like body, same as Mega Gyarados. This also comes out in the designs in this video, Turtonators general body doesn't seem to change much, but its shell grows immensely, and Turtonator itself adapts into a quadruped changing its sillhouette. Flygons general body-shape remains the same as well, even if it has this more metallic armor scattered across its body now, and its antennae and arms changed shape a bit more, but the main change to its sillhouette was mostly extending its wings with another diamond shape and the addition of a second pair of smaller wings. Basically, the magic of Megas is that they're both simultaneously a distinct form clearly derivative of the original, while still being still clearly that original underneath. Or, for a comparisson to Digimon that doesn't compare to Mega-level Digimon, its like how MetalGreymon is still clearly Greymon... unlike WarGreymon which completely changes more radically. Another part of Mega Pokemon that's been consistent so far though is that they keep their primary typing intact... which would mean that Mega Flygon becoming a bug/dragon-type when we officially get one is somewhat unlikely as of right now. In general, as you pointed out the fact that it wasn't a bug-type originally, despite already having a bug/ground-type in the same gen that evolved out of that typing in Nincada, somewhat feels to me like there's a reason that they prioritized it keeping the ground-type, although it is also part of the bug-egg group. Reading its dex-entries, they focus on it creating sandstorms that keep it hidden and its wings creating a sound that attracts prey, so... essentially the same type of hunting-method as Trapinch, staying hidden and laying a trap for its prey, just with it not staying underground but inside a sandstorm now. Perhaps, that's why its primarily a ground-type, because the focus is on it being a Pokemon that creates sandtraps. Basically, it being a ground-type is more important to its identity than being a bug.
I think when I see megas, canon or fanmade, I adore gmax designs more. Not bc I think they’re bad, but gmax designs are simply gorgeous using the concepts of scale and exaggeration to make memorable peak designs. Snorlax is a whole blocked route? Genius. Luxury cruiser lapras? Inspired. Nightmare tent gengar? Oh my god yes. Chonky pikachu? Perfection.

on the note of mega flygon. i like your design, but i feel like the red triangle thingy on the forehead is a little much. it takes away from the eyes (which as you mentioned are a big part of its design.)
Love your vid!
I just like megas like mega mawile and mega sableye since they turn weak gimmick pokemons into powerhouses and giving them the time to shine. It wasnt the best thing balance wise and evolution would have been probably better but it still was nice.
NOW THIS IS THE MEGA FLYGON WE NEED!
W mega flygon design!
Flygon looks incredible!
