Always thought it would make sense if grass types got a small buff in both rain and sunlight, since they’re the third in that trio and plants need both water and solar energy to survive
Yeah! Maybe it could even be a more complicated thing where they start off getting a higher boost, but the longer the weather lasts the lower the boost gets until it's either no boost, or even a debuff? Since plants can't have _too_ much sun or water? Although i doubt that fits with the standard weather mechanics and would like. Need to be it's own Specific type of the weather like with the primals/mega weather trio's weathers?
I feel the hail damage being removed is a buff, as it gives Snow a niche as a more “neutral” weather. There’s no moves or abilities that just remove weather, just a few abilities or items that ignore them, so having something that disables the boons your opposing weather user has without forcing you to go mono-Ice type is really nice.
@@lasercraft32 That disables weather, but doesn’t remove it, and the weather reactivates when the Cloud Nine user swaps out. The use of Snow instead fully replaces the weather and forces them to set it again in order to reap its benefits, therefore its better imo.
IMO Snow not dealing damage is a buff. Rock, Steel, and Ground types are a fine core for most teams since they can cover for eachother's weaknesses for the most part and it gives you a lot of pokemon to pick from. Meanwhile Hail means that your own pokemon that aren't ice types will take chip damage, which is a problem because a all ice type team will have so many weaknesses that no secondary types can cover for. Snow triggers abilities and buff's ice types while hail is a net negative for your team under a lot of circumstances.
I love the small detail that when you talk about a specific game the music shifts to reflect that (Xerneas/Yveltal’s theme for X/Y, AI Sada/Turo for Scarlet/Violet)
LOOMIAN LEGACY MENTIONED YOOOOO As a huge Loomian Legacy fan, it's awesome to see the weather mechanics mentioned on your channel. Fun fact by the way, since Loomian Legacy is still in development, there are more weather types planned for the game. One such weather mechanic is the Thunderstorm weather, which will increase the power of Electric type moves by 25%, increase the accuracy of Electric type moves by 25%, and prevent all Loomians from sleeping. Additionally if a Loomian was asleep when it gets set up, it will be woken up. P.S., you are correct with Strong Winds, the primary effect that prevents trapping moves from working is quite niche, I'm personally hoping it'll get changed in the future. Great videos btw!
Love your little weather octopus, it'd be really cool to find such a "familiar but different" presence highlighting all the different kinds of weather while exploring different areas. Can't wait to play your game one day!
at first i wasnt sure about your game centering around stem topics, but as you make more and more videos the quality and engagement of them just goes higher. love these videos man great job
I really like your idea of taking the typical duality of Fire and Water in those examples you gave and turning it into a triad of sorts, with somewhat of a rock-paper-scissors relationship between Pyro, Hydro, and Cryo. It makes a lot of logical sense to me, and threes tend to be a lot more satisfying than twos, I find.
... I like the thick swamp air after it rains... But that's probably the South Carolina side of my family talking (which is like, waaay thicker than Maryland).
I also plan to make my own Pokemon-like game, and my planned starter is based on the weather. It's a split evolution line (think Eevee or the Hitmons), four ways (it evolves by levelling up in one of the four weathers: sun, rain, sandstorm or hail), and uniquely for a split evo, each of the four evolutions can evolve again, by levelling up after learning the move to summon the weather corresponding to itself (e.g. the Sandstorm evolution evolves into its final form upon learning Sandstorm and levelling up. Also once you pick a weather, you're locked in to that branch of the evo line, teaching the Sun evolution Rain Dance does nothing and won't change it to the Rain form, middle or final). This starter creature based on the weather is a ??? type (because it's essentially all the weathers at once for now, plus I like ??? type and want to make it a proper type, to represent things like "multiple types at once", "variable type", and "something new that has yet to be discovered"). Its name is Fourcast (the etymology should be obvious)
Me throughout the video until a certain point. I wonder if they’ll bring up the shadow storm, probably not… Proceeds to talk about the shadow storm ability. I love this channel!
Imo, Cryo should increase and reduce defense in snowy and sunny weathers respectively. Keeps a theme of fire is about attack, water is about speed and ice is about defense. I'm loving this series, please keep em coming! your designs are super cool.
I have too many thoughts about this awesome video (the editing and art are just gorgeous) and the really cool concepts you've shown here to be coherent so instead I'll just say algorithm engagement
I have a suggestion, what if you make a storming condition, anyone can randomly get struck by lightning. The way you can get the Plazorm form, is they get struck by lighting. I think that sounds hilarious, or cool depending on your mood.
Let me just first say, I absolutely love your channel! The explanations, your fakemon and everything else is such a breath of fresh air for UA-cam channels! Awesome job
-sorry to be that guy but --1:26-- says harsh sun boosts water by 50%. It's an understandable mistake to make in editing, but yeah. sorry again for bringing it up.-
I came from TrueGreen7's video and DAMN I didn't know why my algorithm didn't recommend your videos when I watch a lot of STEM videos in here being in the STEM field myself. I really love how you incorporate the science concepts in your mons and I look forward to seeing more in the future!! You just made a new subscriber! 😁
Your designs are always my favorite part of your videos! The buildup and explanations just make the reveal so much more enjoyable. I love Phazorm and Plazorm, but I think I'm even more excited for your interpretation of the Bose-Einstein condensate for a mythical Cryo type!
I've seen a handful of your videos and your game idea is really intriguing to me. I speak Japanese and I think it would be really cool to incorporate some kind of puzzle like the Braille puzzle from Gen 3 in your game but using a real-world script that would have to be learned
I love the mechanic of Phazom, but kinda feels like a waste having it evolve permanently. I feel like Plazom would work better as a sort of Mega Evolution than a full on evolution, giving the player the opportunity to choose between all 4 forms but not forcing them to evolve it
I'd like to also bring up Touhou Puppet Dance Performance, which has weather and terrain mechanics: Weathers: • Dust Storm: 1/8 damage to everyone that isn't Earth or Steel type (or has an ability-based immunity) similar to sandstorm, however it also suppresses Air Cushion (the Levitate equivalent) but not Wind type's immunity to Earth/entry hazards/terrains. • Calm: blocks secondary effects of moves • Sunshower: swaps Focus Defense and Spread Defense (almost like Wonder Room, which only swaps the Def/SpDef boosts) • Aurora: boosts Light and weakens Dark • Heavy Fog: boosts Dark and weakens Light The terrains are somewhat weirder, imo harder to remember: Terrains: • Suzaku: healing effects self-inflict damage instead. Not a 1-to-1, i.e. Recover-equivalent moves deal 1/4 of max HP in damage instead of 1/2. Healing Power (the Regenerator equivalent) doesn't work but doesn't damage you for switching out. Continue (Rest-equivalent) just fails. • Genbu: slower puppets move first (aka Trick Room) • Seiryu: suppresses type interactions except for immunities. Dream type (equivalent to typeless) still bypass Frail Health (Wonder Guard) • Byakko: moves never miss, except for OHKO moves • Kohryu: suppresses held items (aka Magic Room). Also does weird things with abilities: suppresses any part of an ability that affects damage calculation, suppresses abilities that block OHKOs, and everyone behaves as if they had Unbound (Mold Breaker).
Happy to hear you're planning a demo build for the end of the year (even if it might not happen, it's still sweet to hear) Like usual, if you need any help, I'd be happy to offer mine. Especially for the translation :)
There is a pokemon fan game that has a really interesting weather mechanic, it's called swirling seasons, and the concept was made by a youtuber called Lockstin. I'd suggest checking it out if you have interest in the weather stuff, it is pretty cool.
To answer the question of why the got rid of the hail chip damage but not the sandstorm chip is mainly since ice has so many weaknesses, you don't want to run too many ice pokemon even on snow teams so if there was chip damage it would be bad for all the non-ice pokemon you are forced to run.
Great video, and it was very interesting to hear your thoughts on such an integral part of Pokémon battles! (Not quite as integral as types or stuff like that, but still very impactful.)
It actually sounds very fun! If all monsters had fun, unique interactions and mechanics it would be really interesting to play around with. I adore creative gamedesign. I hope your projects succeeds!
The thing about Sand is it didn't hurt multiple types and was so beneficial it was even worth having Pokemon not of those types on your team despite the chip damage. Hail only benefited Ice types even with Aurora Veil, so it only helped the rare mono-ice team. With Snow no longer hurting non-ice types, Aurora Veil combined with the defense boost ice types get made the type much more valuable.

I don't know how I feel about Plazorm. Phazorm's gimmick could be very fun and interesting, but then throws it away when it evolves? A bit disappointing. Would it be possible to make it another form of Phazorm but with a special form change requirement, like a held item?
weather that changed the TYPING of monsters is such s genius way to set STEMA apart, as long as you keep the concept of STAB, you dont even NEED sny stat or secondary weather effects
interesting section on matter phase mechanics. I happen to envision something along such lines but with the four mythical beasts in Asia: Genbu (Black Turtle) who rules over solid matter; earth Seiryu (Azure Dragon) has several interpretations, one of them where azure = blue = green, thus the azure dragon = forest, but for this i choose the classic water as liquid matter Byakko (White Tiger) has coat and paws of cloud, striding along the heavens. He rules over air, gaseous matter Suzaku (Vermillion Bird/Phoenix) burns with celestial flame, akin to the sun and stars; plasma This can be revised/expanded upon ofc, and feel free to use it as template or outright copy it
I’d almost recommend not making plazorm evolve with a thunder stone but rather switch when hit by or using an electric move/electric terrain if you include that. I think the dynamic states of phazorm is just too good to give up
Yeh it feels really weird to have such a unique ability be immediately deleted entirely once you evolve it But he did say he didnt want to add any electric themed weather so its kinda understandable
Maybe if instead it "evolved" only while holding a certain item? Some sort of catalyst that keeps it in its plasma form-- that way you could swap the item out mid-fight to start switching again, or equip it to dodge out of a form your opponent wants you in.
loomian legacy jumpscared me, also im surprised you didnt talk about doodle world, im not sure what the weather does in this one, but theres a chocolate rain which is, idk
There's like 4 weathers in that one lol Rain, Acid Rain, Chocolate Rain, and Sandstorm They're not that great, especially sandstorm since it just boosts earth type's accuracy, also chocolate rain
Back in Gen V, when we had permanent weather for all weathers, the Speed boosting abilities were absolutley insane. I genuinley believe that when those abilities were legal the meta was at it's most powerful, even to the likes of Gen 9.
It may be a strange comment, but your ideas for the weathers having a Pyro-Hydro-Cryo core reminds me of Card Jitsu, and I like that it can further distinguish "Ice" from "Flying".
Wasn’t expecting to see Loomian Legacy of all games to be featured in this video as it’s not a very popular game but I just want to say that the 2 weathers that you found on the wiki that aren’t in game is called meteor shower and egg rain and the only effect they have is in the overworld where you can find Cosmiore the meteor loomian and Kyeggo the egg loomian. Love this video!
just a note that i thought of, since youre talking about sublimation. a mechanic that i just came up with: if you use a hydro type attack in sunny weather, it could turn into an aero type attack (as in it vaporises the water into gas)
While not a game super focused on monster-collecting, *Epic Battle Fantasy 5* is an excellent turned-based RPG on Steam with a TON of "weather"/environmental conditions. And there are a good number of enemies who use them to their advantage. The weather typically applies a status effect or stat buffs/debuffs to everyone every turn. These statuses can range from powering up one element and weakening another to nullifying negative statuses and buff-dispelling attempts a finite number of times, granting extra moves within the same turn, guaranteeing the next damage instance to critically strike, "Good Luck," etc.
I like the idea of terrains, if you wanted to incorporate something similar it would be cool to see a radioactive terrain since it fits your STEM theme
I did actually check out Loomian Legacy, and while it's take on weather is interesting, it also is most definitely incomplete. As of now, the only ways to get weather in battle outside of the adventure is with manual setup moves. These manual set ups can only be learned by a single three stage line that is found during that weather. Heat is set by Billoforge, a Fire/Poison mon with all its stats put in everything but speed. Fog is set by Charonyx, a Ghost/Light (which is closest to Fairy in comparison but not quite) with a signature Phantom Force that is super effective against Dark types, Wind is set by Whippledriff, which is just Jumpluff but slower, and I forgot the rain setter but its a Water/Bug. The other issue is that to my intelligence, there is no weather abilities, such as Chlorophyll, Dry Skin, etc. So those effects are literally it. Of course Loomian Legacy is like 40% complete in the story and likely its dex, so this will very much likely change for the better, but as of now, weather is kinda pointless outside of hunting for good stat mons with the "acting strangely" mechanic.
Person who knows about Looman Legacy's meta a bit here... and the only time i have thought about rain is because i wanted to use a loomain who sets rain, and even then i only wanted to use the loomian, rain was just a bonus. Soooo... the most weather does is make fire slightly worse (which did not work well) sometimes, and allows you to find aformentioned rain-setter in the wild. And you were correct, meteor shower and egg rain only allow you to encounter cosmiore and kyeggo respectively.

Locust Swarm is my favorite wheather.
just a note that i thought of, since youre talking about sublimation. a mechanic that i just came up with: if you use a hydro type attack in sunny weather, it could turn into an aero type attack (as in it vaporises the water into gas)
Nice to see loomian legacy representation
10:34 GOD TIER VIDEO
insane thumbnail as always
I like the idea of terrains, if you wanted to incorporate something similar it would be cool to see a radioactive terrain since it fits your STEM theme
Logic of matter states turning the weather into triangle makes a lot of sense
A creature collector about S.T.E.M sounds amazing! Good job.
