Fight Club | The Beauty of Sound Design

  • Опубліковано 11 лют 2017
  • David Fincher's “Fight Club” has grown from an underrated gem, this video essays takes a look at the sound design that helped this film become a cult classic, to eventually being widely accepted as one of the best films of all time. I shine a light on the sound design of Ren Klyce and Richard Hymns, specifically in the film's fight scenes, and (hopefully) give a better idea of why it's so important in a film, and the role it played in cementing the films status as one of the greatest of all time.

Yeah, wow. I never take the time to realize how the sound design of a movie affects the movie itself. I remember being disgusted with that scene you showed, but I could never tell why. Now that you explain it, it makes a lot of sense. The scene feels all too real! And I can apply this to other films as well where a scene might just feel off, but I wouldn't be able to tell otherwise. I've now got another thing to look at and appreciate when looking at film. Thanks a lot, man! Keep up the great work!

I always tell people that I have only one favorite movie, that being Fight Club. I've seen it hundreds of times and can recall the complete dialogue from memory at anytime. But as you have stated throughout this video, it's the sound that brings it all together. This is one of the very very few movies that constantly gives me goose flesh/bumps as well as all the hair on my arms standing up. It's truly an amazing experience.
Thank you for providing more in-depth analysis of the sound, I'm sorry that this comment is 2 years late.

Love how all this sound design talk leads to that final Pixies song with the amazing realistic drum sound... which was achieved by Steve Albini in the studio partly by adding an artificial delay to the microphones farthest in the room from the drums, simulating how our ears hear drums in a large room (with the sound reflecting off the walls) 🏆🏆

Two things.. If you want to hear fantastic fight sounds I highly recommend "Unleashed" or as its also known "Danny the Dog". When creating the fight sounds for "The Last of Us" I watched a lot of real fights on youtube, I watched "Fight Club" as well, but "Unleashed" just has this hyper real sound that is so visceral. That was the sound that inspired me. Oh and the Star Wars blaster was a radio tower guy wire being struck by Ben Burtt's wedding rign, not the Slinky which was used for the Eve's gun in "Wall-E".

Great video. I do a lot of low budget shoots and I can't tell you how many times the clients insist that I shoot at the most convenient time for them and not what would benefits the production. So what I get is the most busy times to shoot and audio suffers because of it. I always get from the client that they want the ambient background and I try to educate them that the ambient is added after, but they never get it. I'm so done with low budget productions, but it pays the bills.

what a great video! a long time ago I saw some special on foley artists and have always been mesmerized by the magic they perform. the creativity required to represent a sound with something totally different is amazing. I been like 10 to the movies this past year. Most of the movies are loud and have high quality sound but they need to be more creative because if you do 3D audio in movies (also video games.) it makes the experience way better, like in strawberry fields forever song that's was great sound mix.

Great Job! Totally agree that's what turned people off about this film - it sounded like a bound up fist hacking away at the integrity of human flesh, people couldn't handle it, it was more visceral than the UFC which turns people's stomachs.
Blade Runner's sound design is spell-bounding... the scene in Deckard's apartment, you can hear Rachel's 'computer like' supplanted emotions in the scene as one example.

The more fight scenes I see the more lackluster those fake sound affects for fight scenes just sound fake. I’ve never noticed how great fight club’s fight scenes sound. It adds so much realism that that brutality just makes you feel the punches as they do. This is the video I needed.

Holy crap, even the sound designer sounds confused just trying to explain what they went through to get the punching noises, lol.

Film Radar Perhaps a video on Wolf Of Wall Street or Taxi Driver?

Not out of the realm of possibility! Honestly, my list of intended videos at this point is endless, but I LOVE Scorsese, and I think it'd be a crime not to do a video on at least one of his films at some point.

I think the music is the most important to me besides the main plot.

For me there are several crucial parts to a film, music is absolutely one of them. A good film score can make such a huge difference for a film.
Right? Who would have thought? XD
