  • Hello UA-cam! This is the first video in a series covering SD40-2s and what makes them work. I've been a locomotive tech for just shy of two years and wanted to make a series covering some of the things I had to learn as part of my apprenticeship. This first video just covers some basic stuff and major components you can see just from looking at a locomotive.
    A couple of additions I want to make:
    1. This video is based on my experience with the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway's locomotives, if you work for a larger railroad, there are likely to be some differences between what I talk about and what you're likely to see.
    2. In this video I tried to avoid using the words "front," "rear," "left," and "right" for a reason. Not all locomotives are set up the same way ours are. For a time some railroads cough NW cough ordered locomotives that were set up for "long hood lead" operation. The way to know for sure which end of the locomotive is the front, is to look for an "F" that's painted just under the running boards near each end of the locomotive. The "F" designates the front of the locomotive in terms of how the railroad operates it. We also rarely use the terms "left" and "right" in reference to the sides of a locomotive, instead we use "engineer's side" and "fireman's side" to refer to the right and left sides of a locomotive.
    Thanks for watching everyone! The next video will be on wheel sets and journal boxes.

    Amazing video of information.. although my memory will fail me not long after watching it. Lol I can't remember s..t 🤣 I always have trouble identifying locos.. that why I like when they stencil it on the side of the cab.. I hope you do more of these in the future.. and your trivandrum question. I love it.. both 6353 and 6354 were stars of the movie Unstoppable. I actually did a video on both.. 😃😃🤣 please continue educating us.. this was well put together.. thank you...

      Thanks for watching! And yes, that is correct. We have a couple of other locomotives that were in that movie, but off that top of my head, I can't name them. (I think the 7009 is one) And yes I plan on doing more, no clue how long the next episode will take me to make though.

      @TriGogglin that would be the 4003 and there was a 100 unit in there too, I think it's the 107. And I honestly have no clue who it was named for

      Sweet, thanks again. And yeah, that's not a raw recording. The beeping isn't what a locomotive actually sounds like on startup, I recorded that separately and did some editing magic. (Not that you asked, but I'm pretty sure it's the 6988 that the starting sound came from)

      @@cprs5000 well the short answer is, in low idle the A and D (shutdown) solenoids are energized so the engine slows down but doesn't stop.

    Hi. Thanks for the videos. They are interesting. Can you tell what the RPM range of the main engine is. What does it idle at, and what is the RPM when it’s at max. Thanks. Regards.

    • @CDROM-lq9iz
      @CDROM-lq9iz  5 місяців тому +2

      I plan on getting more into that stuff when I get to the prime mover and the governor, but to answer your question; on and SD40-2, the low idle speed for the engine (if equipped) is 255rpm. Normal idle is 318rpm. Full speed is 904rpm, and the overspeed should trip between 990 and 1040rpm.
      Thanks for watching!

      I actually haven't heard of any complaints about it. Might be because it's still outside the cab, and the crews have to wear earplugs.

    • @CDROM-lq9iz
      @CDROM-lq9iz  9 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, something like 99% of the bells on all of the Wheeling's locomotives are either A) below the running boards, fireman's, side, long hood end of the cab. Or B) front and center on the top of the short hood on the tall nose GP35s. Then there's the 6348 because reasons.

      Not "The" crazy eights runaway, but one of the engines that played AWVR 1206 in the movie Unstoppable that was inspired by the 8888 incident.
