    I think that shielding paint "flaw" was on purpose to ground the control plate.

      AH! that makes sense

    • @generalawareness101
      @generalawareness101 3 роки тому +1

      Yep, that was conductive paint, so it needed to make a connection to the metal plate.

    • @christopheraaron8299

      It's not actually shielding paint. It's just black paint. I tested it in mine and it's not conductive.

    Mine is kind of like yours in that the shielding paint doesn't go all the way up the sides so I had to fix that then shield the back of the pickguard. I widened the nut slots for heavier strings. It stays in tune pretty well.

    I've had my bullet mustang for almost 5 or 4 years now and it's been my go to for a while put a seymour duncan sh5 in the bridge and removed the neck pickup, re wired my tone knob to be a spin a split these are very fun to mod.

    I have this guitar and I love it it is really light and has a really fast neck the pickups are not bad at all. Kind of having an issue with the tuners but other than that it is unbelievably low priced and plays great great video

    I was talking about having this done to my mustang HH, (coil split, not tap). The pickups are two wire, so they need two more leads.

    You just gotta dig a little deeper to get to the wire that connects the 2 coils of the humbucker. I've turned several cheaper 2 wire buckers into 3 or 4 wire pups.

    • @60CycleHumcast
      @60CycleHumcast  7 років тому +1

      I wish not to lose anonymity. Interesting, you think the other wires are hiding in there?

    • @Dr_Satan
      @Dr_Satan 7 років тому +2

      Most likely, yes. Really small wires hidden by the outer cloth tape that goes around the pickup. Or maybe tucked up under the edges where the bobbins meet the base plate. You can always wait untill you replace that one to take it down further if you're concerned it may not be something you can do. The wires are tiny and short, so not much room for error. Maybe not a mod I'd suggest if you need that pickup to function, but definitely one I'd recommend trying if you plan on replacing anyway. The way I figure it, I'd rather have knowledge of how something works, since even the cheap stuff works on the same principle as the expensive stuff, than the $10 or so I could maybe get for an inexpensive used stock pickup.

    • @jvin248
      @jvin248 7 років тому +2

      It's 'easy' to get the wires if you are patient and are good at soldering (the bobbin wires are small/thin and some fiddling). Unwrap the pickup black tape around both bobbins will uncover the wire ends, separate out and put on additional wirings, and wrap back up. Be careful not to nick the bobbin 42ga wires themselves. Get those wires out and then home free to add switching. I'd split the neck pickup into two single coils, leave the bridge as a humbucker, put a 5-way on there for an HSS Strat setup for two singles and quack. Or use a push/pull tone pot to put both pickups in single coil mode.

    You can split the coils in these humbuckers. You have to remove the individual coils to get to the wires. But can be done easily ☺

    If you coil tap/split this... Wouldn't it then be a Duo-Sonic? I've never thought these are very "Mustagy" anyway (doesn't have the different switches, HH instead of SS), so tapping/splitting seems like a cool idea here.

  • @eyeball226
    @eyeball226 5 років тому +1

    Technically you can coil split (tapping is something else) with only 3 wires from the pickup. 4 is necessary for parallel coils in a humbucker though.

    • @60CycleHumcast
      @60CycleHumcast  6 років тому

      Hmm...that sounds unusual. It's possible that the set screw on the knob came loose and is allowing the knob to spin fairly freely on the pot. I would start with checking that.

  • @DougHinVA
    @DougHinVA 7 років тому +1

    so get 2 used 4-wire humbuckers (from GFS originally) and coil split each pickup with the 2 pots switched to push/pull type. ...and 'low value' is not the same as low price. Gibsons with big prices are sometimes mediocre.

    I'm an acoustic guitar guy so electric is an animal that I'm just beginning to work with. I purchased one of these a couple of weeks ago. Over all I really like this guitar. There is only one problem. A couple of days ago I noticed that for some reason the tone control isn't changing the tone for either pickup. What could be the problem?

    • @60CycleHumcast
      @60CycleHumcast  6 років тому

      Chuck Vaughn one of the wires to the tone pot could have become disconnected or might have a cold solder. If you are curious to take a look under the hood don’t be afraid. Electric guitar wiring is fairly fun and forgiving to work with.

    Coil tapping and coil splitting are 2 different things. You keep interchanging them. Splitting is what you are talking about, switching to turn off 1 of the 2 coils. Tapping means having 1 coil and you turn off some of the windings.

    Yes, the coils can be split. Removing one layer of the wrap around the humbuckers reveals that they are 4 wire humbuckers. See this video: ua-cam.com/video/pleLrbzwDIY/v-deo.html

    Seems the term you're looking for is coil split (4 conductor HB's) not coil tap. Tap is when you actually go in to the coil itself and redirect a portion of a the coil normally done on single coil pup's. Very complicated as well. PLAY LOUD FELLAS!

    • @Alex-jq5ft

  • @vonicrimson3619

    If the humbucker has 3 wires and passive it is splittable. Because one is for grounding and the other 2 are for each coil. If it has 3 wires and active you can’t split it. One is for battery one is for grounding and the other one is for both of the coils
    also it’s coil split not coil tap.
