How weird haha fender guitar with two humbuckers and a Les Paul with two single coils
Find it ironic cause you would expect a les paul based guitar to have humbuckers and a mustang (or any fender based guitar) to have single coils, but that the opposite here.
i know right? I had an early take where i ranted on that for awhile lol.
I
Illuminati
Les Paul preferred single coils hence the Gibson melody maker and the Epiphone Olympic.
my thoughts exactly
you predicted the 2 colors that they added to the mustang
White and surf green
they are sadly not available in my country :( its just ugly black and blue
I have been waiting for this video for a while. I really love your stuff.
Watching this at the end of 2018, I think it’s funny that Guitar Center in America currently DOES offer the Squier Mustang in the EXACT colors he says he wishes it came in. White and Seafoam Green.
K Vrabel I was just about to comment that lmao. I have the surf green one and I just wish it has the cool mustang logo instead of the stupid font like the one on Mexican fenders
@@jmaes1507 Decal.
Do you live in Tennessee? ;)
He's getting so much mileage out of this little guitar.
Its a brand new product, and people are interested in what its all about.
I like this guy. And want to check out his podcast. (And I will!)
But I am tired of hearing about this guitar...I guess I could phrase it better.
Great voice. And fun to watch.
I just keep clicking to see if he is doing something new.
bwgti this is going to be my last sl video for awhile (until I start modding it). I have some pedal videos coming up next.
he's going for the subs ;p
Iggytommy I need those sweet sweet subs!
I love these videos can't wait to see you mod the les paul
Thank you for the review! Thinking of getting something for my little brother to start with.
I just ordered a Seafoam Green Squier Bullet Mustang from Guitar Center on sale for $130 with free shipping. I am EXTREMELY excited
Oh yessssss I’ve been waiting for this ❤️
Awesome video dude I have the Squier Bullet Mustang HH and ordered an Epiphone SL, can't wait to compare the two in my videos :)
Glad this popped up in my suggested videos because these are the exact 2 guitars I was deciding on getting next.
Ryan, I like your demo videos! You do a great job of discussing the specifics of the gear such as the hum buckers and bridges. You show how things effect the sound of the guitars. That was helpful about the Les Paul tuners. I didn't know that about the tuners. The squire is interesting very light weight and decent sounding.
I'm a beginner and I bought the Mustang a month ago, because of your vids (thanks!). I love it, I'm really happy I can easily make the chords and everything else.
I had to change the intonation screws in the bridge though, as some of them are touching the strings. I just replaced all of them with M3 standardized screws from a hardware store
I was thinking of replacing the screws as well - were the M3 screws a perfect fit? Read on a forum that the Bullet Mustang uses slightly non-traditional screws sizes and wasn't sure if they would rattle or unwind when strumming or something.
And do you remember the length size the new ones were? Not sure how short I'd want/need them. Any help would be appreciated!
Your review was wonderful! I've been playing acoustic guitar for 5 years now and I'm gunna try out electric and I was looking at both of these guitars! I was leaning more towards the mustang with the help of this review I am definitely going with the mustang
I love my Bullet Mustang to bits and play it constantly! I bought another just to mod -- fashioned it into a traditional Mustang of sorts (single coils, 2x 3-way selectors, etc.) -- and enjoy that, as well.
I'm scared I won't play my les Paul anymore
Looking into The SL just for home use, but am more hesitant after your honest comprehensive review. Thankyou
I bought two White Mustangs, one I've modded with some hyper hot dual/dual rail humbuckers from China for about $20 and a LP style switch. It will scream but the magnets are so strong it will generate unwanted harmonics if too close to the strings. Just love these super light guitars. I grew up in the 60's with a Duo-Sonic and put a humbucker in the bridge on it. I had forgotten just how fun they are to play.
You can decrease the magnetism if you want to.
I love my mustang guitar. It was already cheap, but there was even a sale! I recently moved from acoustic to electric, and you’re right about it being a great guitar for beginners
Same
Mustang in SURF GREEN arrives at my house today.
is it good? cuz im looking forward to buy it, mustang shape is underrated
@@seflw9666 Get it NOW at Guitar Center- 129.99. The humbucker PUs are very user friendly in that they can produce a very clean almost single coil like tone as well as crunch with a little overdrive.
The Mustangis at least twice as good as the SL or the Epi Special I P90.
I also bought the turquoise SL. I've ordered some replacement tuners and I'm debating whether to replace the pickups with lipstick style, or I might go the opposite extreme and put in some rail type single coil humbuckers. I'm eventually going to get the Mustang too. That looks like a fun guitar to play. I'm hoping a special edition comes out with a different color than dark blue or black.
Agreed man! Decent but I wish I could eliminate the buzzing. Got the cherry sunburst and it actually and surprisingly looks great! Certainly hard to keep tuned but for home, not horrible.
Thanks for the videos lad!
I had the buzz too. Really bad. I got so anal that I leveled the frets, which is always a treat. That helped tremendously with the action, but I swear there’s still a buzz.
I totally agree though. The vintage sunburst finish on mine looks great.
I bought a white Squire Bullit Mustang and Orange amp , love them both ! !
I just bought a surf green mustang two days ago - good solid guitar - plays great - love it.
Hi again Ryan! Either I got lucky with my particular SL, or the optional setup by SW went further than just changing to lighter gauge strings and setting the action. I'm still strongly recommending the optional setup even to those who have the skills to do it themselves, as from yours and other's channels' testimonies about this model coming straight from the factory showing that its a bit tricky to get it playable. If Sweetwater's techs do it, and if its not right, you can send it back without the extra headache. I suspect that they went the extra mile to be sure it didn't come back to them.
Not trying to rub it in, but every fret on my SL rings true, even when bending in the upper register, I'll demonstrate that once I get my 'part 3' video done. Now that I think about it, I'm going to get out my jeweler's loupe and see if I can document any fret dressing marks on my frets. I do know they used a fret file on the back side of the bridge to guide the distance between the wrapped strings for the lighter gauge, as there are more than 6 notches in it. Maybe putting 9s (9-42 gauge instead of the stock 10-46) on it may have helped with buzziness too... hey, more content testing out different string gauges?
I may pick up a mustang someday, sounds like a good deal as well - I don't own a guitar with humbuckers presently. Thank you again for your NAMM post last summer that got us all excited for this new model.
I took your suggestion to use the iPad mini to do videos with, thanks! I think it will work out fine, waiting on a tripod mount for it at the moment. I won't be modding my SL right away, going to 'put a few miles' on it first. I love the way its so light and (for me) plays really well. Yeah, the tuners will have to go sometime soon, that I fully agree with. Please let us know if you find some low cost tuners that work better than the stock ones. With the stock tuners, I have to tune down a full turn of the peg and then carefully tune up to bitch (pitch?), but once there, it mostly stays in tune for awhile.
It looks like Gibz found a way to fix the issues with the Melody Maker and LP Special by combining the better features of both economically.
I'm glad you tell us the DC resistance of the humbuckers before we get into any nitty-gritty stuff.
Mine arrived yesterday. I set it up in an hour, replaced the strings. The tuners are perfectly fine, after tuning it and stretching the strings, playing about an hour yesterday, today I barely had to rune again... These are awesome.
It looks like the Epiphone's bridge has the 'saddles' integrated into the casting (ie, a fixed intonation). Am I right, or is there some intonation adjustment that I can't see?
I've had my Epiphone Les Paul SL for about 5 or so months, and it seems that after the tuners have been used and tuned a lot they start to stay in tune. this is what happened with me at least
Went to your page and your a smashing pumpkins fan. That’s very cool.
Probably by accident, LOL! They are the worst tuners I've ever used and I've seen them all!
There's a new Amazon Exclusive 'Dakoda Red' Bullet Mustang coming out. (Not sure when though)
Shane Wilson oh what? I need to look that up
I'd buy that for a dollar.
@@erickt1974 Id buy 2 for 2 dollar
Just recently bought a used black/white SL. It's honestly not a bad guitar at all. Feels comfortable and sounds great. Don't have any issues with it whatsoever. It actually stays in tune for me and its hard to put down once you pick it up. Love the vintage style to it. My gf loves when I play Johnny B Good on it cuz it just fits the guitar so well. Ever since I bought it, I've barely picked up my Silvertone at all cuz its a pretty addicting instrument.
Seafoam and white Mustang - $115 Guitar Center Black Friday Deal. Great Vid, man! I now want both!
Guitars are high right now. I paid $219 for a Mustang and then it went on sale 3 days later for $179 at MF. I called them up and they gave me a $40 refund!
At the moment I play a lovely classic vibes strat and a nice jazzmatser with p90s, however I'm not sure which to get. I am looking for a nice Les Paul but the Id love a Mustang. Any opinions?
Love the shirt and love the video!
Justin Mabe one day old navy is going to sponsor me.
Lol!
Oh, and i got a black pearl pickguard on ebay, made for this model, and put it on my black mustang, it looks really fancy.
The tuners on the SL are the same as on my Epi SG Special. Not great but will hold tune fine if you use "lock and loop" stringing. The nut, however, was a big source of tuning problems on my SG.
Beautiful guitar, that mustang is. Gorgeous little thing. I’m gonna buy it.
So if you'd take the Epiphones Les Paul SL and modded it what would you do, personally. I'm thinking of grabbing one and swapping tuners, pick-ups.
tuner swap first, everything else will be me getting creative and weird.
Does anyone know where to get brass saddles for the mustang bridge ?
i love the look of the sunburst vintage honestly
6:45 My thoughts exactly. I've been looking for Telecasters in white with black pickguards and maple boards, as I'm so tired of Strats in black with white pickguards and rosewood boards. I like the idea of having the opposite.
Every single epiphone I have played has had fret issues. Including a 500 dollar l.p. pro gold top. Having said that I have a special 1 with p90s and I had to get rid of the fret buzz but it sounds awesome
you do great. you are the one who makes true reviews without leaving out good and bad on a guitar. so i can go after the review..when i choose to buy another guitar...i really like the SL and i think sometimes. that it sound like a Fender... not like a usual dark rock sound of a Les Paul... i have Squire Strato California.. very good and beautiful and new a Sx Furrian Alder P90 from Rondo music.. now i like buy another with a strong personality in tones. i like Country music and The love song aera songs of the late 50S of Jim Reeves and Freddy Fender and Patsy Cline. so i want a lovely, warm and nice sound.. probably together with delay and chorus. do you know what pedals they used late 50s -60s for that kind of lovesong music ?? p.s. i m a beginner with electric guitar . not with accustic guitars. and i m 62 years old..
What you know about Squire Fender Telecaster Bullet and Affinity? are they ok ?
The rogue guitars new at Christmas time are 59.99 new coil tapping humbucker once set up and some filing of the fret ends they don't sound bad
I have a Squier Affinity Bronco Bass in black, it had a white pickguard which looked awful, so I roughed it up and gave it a red finish. Now it actually looks pretty decent.
Also helps that I put a lipstick in it.
My epiphone les paul Jr. Has very solid tuners but it's from Indonesia. I have no complaints at the same price as your sl.
Since I unfortunately can not so good english, I have only one question: Which of the two guitars is your favorite? I like the sound of single coils but the humbuckers do not sound as dark as Gibson's guitars.Thank you for you Answers
Willy Billy the mustang is easily my favorite, it's a fantastic guitar.
Then get a Squier Strat! You get Squier quality and single coils!
My son bought a Mustang just like that one in mint green! it is a great guitar.
I have 2 Squier Bullet Mustangs . They are awesome guitars . Everything is stock and they're my gigging guitars . Might even get a 3rd one.
i'm planning to buy les paul SL... sound great for me.
Indonesia wins! This mustang in Surf Green is my last purchase. I got it in January and was actually debating on getting a LP SL in the store (GC in Albany). It's my first short scale and I enjoy playing it very much. Had no idea that shortscale sounds so fat. And the two humbuckers are insane and really made for distortion but you can also pull off nice cleans.I ordered a custom tortoise shell pickguard on ebay cus specifically for squier bullet mustang, and now it looks very Nirvana.
My favorite part is how chunky the pickups sound, and how you can go from metal, to bright and twangy cleans on the bridge pickup. You could easily take it from metal, to country with just your tone and volume knobs . Very dynamic.
Note: with the reach around bridge, you can get almost perfect intonation by fiddling with string gauges.
What do string gauges have to do with intonation?
Great color point. Surf green now.
I know comparison videos are subjective, but this one is very well done imo
An interesting experiment might be to put multiple capacitors in the epi's internal signal path so that the neck and bridge pups are more balanced.
Hey, i'm having tuning problems with my mustang, i got locking tuners on it that i got for a good price, i have intonated the bridge as good as i can but it does not keep tune and does not get perfectly in tune on some strings, i suspect it's because the tension is high because of the locking tuners and pushes the strings into the rather soft plastic nut, it was allready sticking when i got it and made the slots slightly wider so they don't stick and put pencil in the slots, but it still happened, do you have this problem ? Would a bone nut be worth it ?
Locking tuners for a good price? LOL! Your original tuners were better than the new ones! Cheap Chinese locking tuners are more apt to not stay in tune than cheap non-locking tuners! I had some that were supposedly Gotoh locking tuners and I had an .008 gauge string in the high E and it would always slip no matter what I did! Then I found out that there are a lot of Fender, Grover, and Gotoh counterfeit tuners on Ali Express for $10 shipped! Now I never buy from Reverb where I got mine, or eBay, Amazon, or Ali Express. Only Sweetwater and other respected websites.
Its funny that the limited edition version of the mustang have the same two colors he said he wanted
What is the Epiphone body made of? Plywood?
JMO but I've had two of these Epis and noticed that on both of them the screws on the tuners to the headstock were loose when I got them, might be something to check if you get one. I think it makes a difference in how it stays in tune. I did send the first on back because it had fret buzz on the 17th fret, guy at Guitar center wanted me to just let them fix it but I told him I wanted a replacement.
And the replacement had fret buzz, too, right! LOL! Not many guitars have perfectly level frets unless you buy a Gibson that's been Plek'd.
I was just thinking about whether I should buy the epiphone or mustang bullet, so thanks for the video! That's such a bummer about the epiphone. I'm mainly a fender guy but the epiphone looked like something I could surf on. kinda reminds me more of a fender actually. But how did they mess this up? its a real popular guitar right now, but they fail to live up to simple standards. Think I'll go with the Mustang.
so if I'm between getting this SL or a Telecaster Affinity, would you say go for the Tele?
Affinity teles are great for the money. Although the tuners aren't the greatest they are passable. The only complaint I can find is that the pickups are weak.
I remember the favorite guitar I ever played was a Affinity Tele with a maple neck. Now I own a limited edition America standard but the Affinity was absolutely great and I wish I had it now, tempted to buy one just so I don't bang up the American standard. In my opinion you can't get anything better in the price range.
His review seems pretty accurate. Fender does an exceptional job with their Squier Brand, inexpensive line of guitars. It's hard to go wrong with a Squire. The one thing that I would say about the tuners on the Epiphone is that I have guitars with those exact same cheap tuners, and have played lots of gigs with them, with no problems. Low line Epiphones AND some older Squier Bullets use the same cheap tuners. I've used them on both Epi's and Squiers on lots gigs. I've had zero problems with them. So, I would take his advice about the Epiphone tuners with a grain of salt. One thing that I will say, is that I play jazz. So, I don't do a lot of string bending. This may account for why my cheap tuners work just fine. I've got these tuners on Squier Bullet and Epi Special II. Other than the tuners on the Epi, comments, I'd say his review is a good one.
No, those tuners are the worst.
Hey Ryan. Did you find a tremolo replacement that would work for that Squier? I just won one at a concert and I don't have a tremolo style guitar and I really want one.
I havent experimented with it. but if you put a tele halfstyle bridge on it and grind out slots for the strings you could probably put a bigsby behind it. A duo sonic style 3 saddle bridge might do the same thing but you would need to shim the neck and raise the saddles up pretty high to get clearance over the back end of it.
60 Cycle Hum thanks man. I will look into both options.
The SL is quite an awesome guitar , very tele like , The wrap around bridge can be dialed in so it's very close , certainly close enough for rock and roll. The tuners are not as bad as he says , if you wind up to the note it will stay in tune just fine. But the thing about the SL is just that it sounds really great.
The ones I had on a guitar sucked. I will never have a guitar with those kind of tuners.
I’d say Mustang. It just feels nicer to me. And I like the output of the dual coil pickups.
You are are spot on with those nasty ping econo tuners on the Epi. Scott Grover did a video about tuners but he said those tuners are good he had a guitar with them. From my personal experience with bolt-on epis it would take only a few minutes for the guitar's G and high E string to go out of tune.
They are the worst on the market by far. I can't figure out how they're still around on Epi's because no one else uses them any more.
@@joeking433 Hell yeah! There is no reason that the bolt-on Epis dont at least have some cheap unstamped or Wilkenson rotomatics or Kluson style tuners. I bought a Squire 3 years ago at $180.00 and it had stable but cheap unstamped rotomatics for tuners.
Unfortunately stole my 72s USA Stratocaster and I can not afford expensive guitars anymore as a Pensioner. So I decided for the Squire Mustang and was not disappointed. Great guitar for a super price. I was surprised by the humbuckers who sound open and bright not as dark and stuffy as a Gibson Les Paul.
Since I have been operated several times on the left hand, the short scale of the Mustang is also very appealing to me. All in all ... a great guitar at an unbeatable price.
I just ordered grover tuners and hot rail humbuckers for my SL
Great review again. Love my Squire, way better than they used to be. Owned a Gibson Les Paul Studio, 2000, LTD EC-1000 and a Squire Vintage Mod Jaguar Bass. Next purchase: Squire Pine body telecaster or Mexican made Fender Tele: thoughts?
I like the blue, but hey, it's a matter of taste. Sometimes the neck adjustment can eliminate buzz.
The one thing that might save the Epiphone is adjusting the truss rod. You may find that the buzzing you are getting and the uneven frets is caused by the neck being too straight and your 1/8” height at 12 might just be a tiny bit too low?
1/8" at the 12th fret is high! You should be able to lower it to 1/16" with no buzzes. Turning the truss rod, however, is sometimes magic. I can have a neck that I can't get good action on and with a little turn of the truss rod it's a whole different neck!
This is a good video.
I'm way late to the party Ry but have got one coming in the post in the next day or so & may mod it like you did? You cant go wrong for that money can you lad? I'm deffo gonna paint the headstock black to match the body as I just love matching headstocks. Gotta find some white or gold waterslide decals then online to finish the look. Cheers bud. Stay safe lad.
As for the ability to upgrade these two, pick the Squire. I bought the Squire Strat for $99.00. Spend $200.00 on a roller nut, locking tuners and roller saddles. The labor is an additional cost unless you can do this work for yourself. Also you (I) always end up adjusting the neck. Polish the frets also. This will play great for the money invested. I agree with you on the Epiphone as being difficult to do much with it. Gibson still insists on using that crap Tuneomatic bridge that should have been done away with the second year. Too bad. Good job on this review!
What is the guitar behind him?
muy buena para tocar bachata dominicana de los 90s...
What's the guitar off to the right of the epiphone, I'm very curious.
Italia, Supro, Reverend, or Eastwood i think...
Compare it to the Les Paul special 2
I don't like black with white pick guards either. I like the sea foam green for the Fender Mustang Squire.
Has Epiphone made any changes?
you must be pretty happy that the mustang comes in sea foam green and white now
I had the Mustang Bullet but never got along with the neck shape. It was too shallow. Now I have the Epiphone SL as a beater guitar. I replaced the pickups. The neck is more comfortable than the Mustang. The frets were level enough on both. Tuners were a little smoother on the Mustang. The toggle switch on the Mustang is in an awkward position for strumming.
What is the brand of the two guitars behind him that have the angular headstocks?
Airline
The Yellow Dog Club sometimes Supro as well
I wonder of the Squier Bullet strat is as good as its cousin the Mustang.
Weird that you mention here two years in the past for me watching in 2019, that the Mustang would be cooler in Surf Green, two days ago in 2019 I bought the Surf green finish Mustang for $130
The guitar industry revenue is down. Guitars aren't selling like they used too. Probably because of the type of pop music in this modern era. The last guitar generations are getting old now. So guitar companies are trying to compete by making more affordable instruments. Which is probably a good thing or a bad thing I guess. Good upload!
I think the entire industry is not taking the second hand market into enough consideration for the guitar recession. An even moderately well maintained guitar will last pretty much forever. How many used guitars from the last 30 years are out there changing hands every day?
not true at all. guitars are selling more now then they ever have. guitar companies have always made affordable guitars. Squier and Epiphone have been around since the late 60's, the only difference is they didn't build a good cheap guitar back then. it wasn't until 2008 when they started making better cheap guitars. in this modern era pop music isn't the only thing people listen to and im from this generation, besides even in pop music people play an instrument.
it is any convenient to put a mustang style vibrato in the mustang?
nope, you would have to remove wood to do that
@@60CycleHumcast yeah i was thinking of that, the bridge of the mustang is any good by the way?
joaquin castillo it’s a functional hard tail bridge. It wouldn’t be hard to swap it with another hard tail if you prefer another style.
@@60CycleHumcast yeah, its just, i wanted to try a vibrato bridge, but i guess the hard tail is fine, thanks for the help anyways!
Fret level ... look up the 'ron kirn how to level yer frets' thread on the tdpri forum to get a tool list and techniques. A marble door threshold is a good source for the leveling beam, and a welding tip cleaner file set to cut the nut slots, are the least expensive options for the specialized tools you'll need. Next level up is to build a Matt Vinson/StewMac fret leveling jig... and you'll level all the guitars in your house..
jvin248 will do! Thanks!
I hate paying the Stewmac tax... they really really like their shit, and price it accordingly.
Good products, but sucky prices.
What do you mean by 9.5 9.7 for the pickups?
reading their resistance with a multimeter. Higher numbers are hotter.
great info - I think I go for a Rondo over the Epiphone - the Mustang is a reasonable guitar
Ryan, the Imperial Blue is just fine, better than black, and you got used to that! Your black MIM Duo Sonic is the one ya aughta consider refinishing in your favorite color! I have a MIJ Fender Mustang "Pawn Shop" version in Lake Placid Blue. I got lucky, saw it at my local Pawn store before it went on eBay years ago. Paid $500 out de do' on de spot. I would be buried with it but I'll probably get the "dust to dust" treatment as there won't be no dough to bury me, haha. I just bid on a blue Squire Bullet right after this video...but it did anotha, and it was'd gone! "Item no longer available" : ( No worries though, I gots my Japy Mustang. Fun videos, unassuming and helpful too.
Right when the internet started up I used to go and buy a bunch of stuff at pawn shops and sell them on Ebay! You could make a killing back then! One Russian pawn shop owner got really pissed at me, thought I was ripping him off. I've hated Russians ever since!
Strange how single coil like the Squiers HB's sound.
does the mustang have a smaller body then the LP...???
i know im late. i think its thinner than the LP and yeah maybe smaller
@@seflw9666 okay thx
Refinish the bullet mustang and make a video on it
Nick White I think I'm going to strip it at least
Wouldn't it look cool with a natural finish?
Majik53 no cuz the laminates probably look like ass
Nick White why looks better than that sea foam cum epi
im curious to see what kind of wood is under there, im hopping its a multi piece body and not layers of plywood, either way i think it will look better than the blue finish that is on there now.
Bullet Mustang no question
I just bought the Mustang in white for $179. It also comes in the seafoam green and black.
Mustang comes in Arctic White and Red now (limited edition)
And Surf Green and Olympic Whote
Gotta say I have a few squires, and they all are great playing guitars that being said one of my go-to guitars is a les Paul special 2 I picked up for $35 but had to do some fret work, installed a set of '57 epiphone reissue pickups, different tone cap, treble bleed circuit, tuners etc, etc so my $35 Guitar was how much? ;) but that being said I bet the SL could be a good giging guitar for an extra $125-$150, if you are not going to ever expect a return on it, and just play the Damn thing. Thats my 2 1/2 cents worth. Cheers
And you can always take the good parts of it and use it on other guitars or sell them.
Put Mustang Competition stripes there and it will look awesome with this color xD
