QOTD: If you could make ONE trade if you’re Toronto? What would it be?? 🤔
all the additions that Treliving made, and he couldn't find a way to improve their defensive play... we didn't need the additional offense he signed or traded for, because the liability of the Leafs has always been their defensive corps (at least since '93-94 when Pat Burns had a mean and steady defensive corps that wasn't afraid to block shots, clear the front of the net, hit along the boards and didn't give up half the number of odd man rushes our defense now is known for). Dimitri Yuskevich was gold; Jamie Macoun, Bob Rouse, Sylvain Lefevre.. they were hard to play against. The defense we have now are a bunch of pansies and even when they do play physical, they are still defensively inept.
As a former Yotes fan, 100% would not trade Keller for Marner. Keller is such a core piece of the team, with chemistry with many of the top guys, like Schmaltz, as well as being a leader on and off the ice. He was a big reason why Cooley signed instead of going back to college. Can't see him being moved unless he requests it.
He loved playing on Arizona, hated how that ownership did him, signed to play in Arizona. Their best player + knies is from there, Shane doan works for the front office, and as a leaf fan I’d love him , I love his game

No lies detected. I did tell many leafs fans that this was their future back in 2018, not a single one of them believed me. Now for some reason they don't wanna talk about it. This wasn't that hard to see coming, the team construction was terrible from the beginning.

Marner is an UFA after next season and he's on a NMC, what team is going to give up anything valuable for him vs just waiting a year if they really wanted him?
He'd be one hell of a rental for a team that thinks they've just got a little fine tuning for a cup run, or they think Marner might try them out to see if he's a long-term fit there.

@@williammontroy9024lol yeah but you weren't wrong. Marner, on a team with grit and veteran leadership would do wonders. He just needs linemates to do all the dirty work for him. That's why Hyman was such a good fit with him and Matthews.
As a bruins fan I kinda want to lose game 5 so we can see all the jersey on the ice during game 6 and fans get pissed off

Hawks have a bunch of D prospects, picks and cap space. Marner would help speed up their rebuild a fair bit.
As a rule, if you're a fan of a team and you propose a trade and there's no hesitation on your part that you'd do that trade, that usually means that the other side wouldn't.
Yeah, accepting a Marner deal of any kind without retention for Toronto would probably be a win for Toronto. It's a massive cap dump basically.

@@joshhanham5325Keller would produce just as much as Marner with Matthews on his line, Keller is a PPG player on a terrible team and he still has 4 years left on his deal and is paid significantly less than Marner
@@unbearablycringe This is the correct answer. Marner is better than Keller, yes, but not by that much realistically. Marner is going to want a raise to at least 12m(assume 13 since his ego won't let me be under Matthews). If it is just a Marner for Keller, there is no way the Yotes do it.

Great Video, as usual, Nathan. I don't think that The Core Four is going anywhere, at the very least, for now, especially after hearing The Press Conference introducing Craig Berube the other day, as Coach. If you'd listened closely, Craig Berube spoke as if they were going to stay, especially since they've all got NMCs. However, this is definitely their final hurrah & if things don't go well, they'll be likely trading at The Trade Deadline or Signing/Trading Mitch Marner to a team that's willing to take him. Let me know what you think

For me I'm fixing the Defensive core. When the Maple Leafs can only count on two guys being legit top 4 defenceman in Morgan Rielly and Jake McCabe. In regards to any hypothetical Marner deal. We all have to remember that he's a pending UFA at the end of next season. For arguments sake if I'm dealing Mitch Marner. I'm looking at the Nashville Predators Juuse Saros who's also a pending UFA at the end of next season. (Not saying it's a 1 for 1).

If I was a Leafs fan, I'd be nervous about having Treliving making the decisions. Imo, his Flames tenure was disastrous. I think the best deal for Marner will come from a non-playoff team with cap space. Verbeek in ANA wants a top 6 RW and has young depth on the blue line to trade. Marner can improve their top line and feed the puck to Carlsson & MacTavish.

I'll be beaten for this comment probably, but the problem with the Leafs aren't the players. They literally abandon their system and they totally failed on the ice and mentally as well. Marner is still top tier offensively. They need to get things together with their system and mentality. No I'm not a Leafs fan.
We just need a good goaltender. No need to remove Marner or others. Maybe get a good dman. It is hard to trade most of these guys this summer
Honestly the whole thing revolves around having a AHL coach.. AHL calibre Goaltending or back up calibre if you want to be nice.. and AHL calibre Defence, Klinberg was the right move at the time and a great pick up gave some flexibility with Morgan Reilly, but once he went down our weaknesses were exposed and Boston has exposed our lack of defence and goaltending 10x over this playoffs.. you see swayman making big saves, that’s what we need, you see there defence blocking shots, that’s what we need, you see the break out started from the D that’s what we need.. time to ship off some pieces and go get us some goaltending, get a real NHL coach, and let’s start rebuilding around Matthews and give him some Grit and Core players..
Funny people think Keller is better than Marner when they play very similar styles and are debatable between who is “better” Marner is better in his own end but Keller is the more skilled puck handler.
Honestly, Parayko might not be the greatest puck mover, but he shares qualities of the few D-Men the Leafs have successfully paired with Riley, and should fit great next to him, and be the most reliable D partner Riley has ever had. Plus his ability to control the front of the net would be much needed on the Leafs.

McCabe is a def keeper. He's about the only one who puts his nuts on the line, hits, defends decently and has a bit of offense to his game. The rest? Pretty much. Although Tavares, stripped of the C, huge pay cut and centering the 3rd line I'd potentially be ok with.

Keller and or Kaliyev would excite me I just don’t know Kellers value at all. I see his point totals but I haven’t heard much about his play driving. He would probably be a huge name in Toronto tho. Idk, I’m excited to see the off-season for the first time in awhile.

This probably would never happen, but with the style Treliving is looking for, and a team in need for a Marner like talent, I would say Marner for Wilson. I dont know what else would be added, and I know Washington fans love Wilson, but I think having a Marner player playing with Ovi could be huge. I realize Ovi is getting old, but Marner would be the replacement for Bakstrom they've been looking for.

I think although it doesn't look good on paper the Leafs get massive cap savings and Crouse has a lot of term and I think he could easily be a 60-70pts player in Toronto. We all know Toronto should make the playoffs although this move likely makes them a worse regular season team I think come playoff time it would be extremely helpful with Crouse and McBain giving them size as well as the type of scoring the Leafs don't have throughout their lineup. As for Utah they get a big name player that definitely can bring in fans and give them a lot of excitement

Unpopular opinion, but the leafs made the right choice to go with Willy long term instead of Marner. Marner doesn’t even look like he wants to be there anymore, which leads me to think he would waive his NMC. But, he will 100% be picking where he goes. Getting anything for Marner is better than losing him for nothing, and if they can manage to no retain salary would be a huge help. Wishful thinking though

Totally agree that it will just be the same repetitive behavior in the playoffs past this season and that maybe he will develop in an all round better player in a market that has less of a spotlight. Sure, I know I’m an Oilers fan, however it would be 100% be a leaf move if they traded Mitch Marner a guy that has helped them with one playoff series since 2017 in exchange for Clayton Keller, who has minimal playoff experience that would be such a leaf trade
Marner for Dobson, sign Guentzel as UFA and sign Crosby as a UFA after next season when Tavares is off the books.
Clubs aren’t stupid they will wait another year until Marner is a UFA and try to sign him then, no way any club will do any favors to the Maple Queefs

As a Canadian supporting Coyotes now supporting Utah if Bill Armstrong trades Keller for Marner 1 for 1 even if marner performs i'd never excuse BA.
The team should be build around Matthews from the start. Make him captain and start trading guys out if the can. Marner, Nylander, Taveres should go and Brodie should go and geo. Build your defense up and start looking for a great goalie coach and a goalie.

All the tv pundits say that Montreal came back against Toronto being down 3 to 1, so there may be a chance. The only problem is that Toronto is not Montreal.
Why would a guy with a “No Trade Clause” want to go to Utah?

Nobody is trading for him. He's a great player. But just wait a year. Maybe Chicago next off-season. He does need change of scenery.
Any trade that involves Marner will be fore a defensemen. And most likely a top paring dman.. And if I see about getting any forward I'm looking a koneckney ( a Darcey Tucker type) and mabey a young dman or picks and prospects. People can say what they want about his value base these playoffs, But he's a star player with 90-100 pt potential. He may not perform in the playoffs but he could certainly get a team there. If you could convince him to waive Buffalo has at least 3 potential No1 dmen. If I'm the Leafs I'd see what it would take to get Owen Powers . Buffalo would get star to play with Tage Thompson and the Leafs get a top pairing rising star dman. He's a left shot dman but that would push Rielly to second pairing.
What D does Nashville have to give up? No way you do Marner for Askarov straight up. Not a chance.
So that Keller Marner trade, why would the 'Yotes do that? Why would they take an additional 3M in cap space, give up the younger, still developing player signed long term, for a player on a expiring contract? Toronto would need to sweeten. We're talking having to add a Easton Cowan or a Fraser Mittin sweetener while eating salary.
Toronto fans and media need to look more at the DeBrincat trade, and realize that's kinda the return they're going to get back from him. With Utah, it'd probably be more like a Barrett Hayton + Ingram + 2nd for Marner, and that's only if Marner wants to go there.
Anywhere else, Toronto is either going to have to eat salary, or take back a bad contract. LA makes sense. Marner for Dubois one for one may work before Dubois trade protection kicks in, maybe adding minor pieces to make it look less one for one but that'd be the meat of it.
I don't think ANY team is gonna take PLD ever again.

Utah would be stupid to give up Keller for Marner. Utah will have $43M in cap space, so I could see them being in the market for Marner, but they aren't giving up much more than a 1st and a 2nd round pick if the Leafs don't retain salary.

Marner for Ehileres and Morrisy
One of the most underrated players to one of the most overrated. Don't think Utah wants to shoot themselves into their foot. This trade proposal is so one traded that it boggles my mind anyone would suggest it. Don't think anyone will do one-for-one for Marner atm. Atm Toronto should just want him out without retaining too much. Then go get some actual defence and a goalie plus depth scoring instead of another single heavy contract.
So what they need to do is to trade Marner to a team that can float that contract for a year, don't think Marner will object as it will give him an opportunity to do good. I would think Utah, might accept a full on dump of the contract, maybe picks in return, they got plenty to give out.
The other thing is to get Tavares contract off the books. It will be much more difficult operation and they have to retain, possibly make a deal with a 3rd party to get the cap low enough for a team to want him.
They got enough stars with Matthews and Nylander and with the cap flexibility they can focus on depth instead of a silly top heavy team.
That's just plain stupid. How're you going yo trade a player who's got nmc or no trade unless that player is ok with it. I believe that half of Mathews goals would disappear without mariner's playmaking.

Who else remembers almost a decade ago when they brought Babcock on and we were all hoping and praying for the first round draft pick and watching Little Mitchy come up. Is this the fucking rebuild they gave us the ownership is 100% to be held accountable for decade after decade after decade of terrible fucking decisions that just disappoint everybody in this market.
