They claim ‘to have been arguing about political things and hung to upside down, an insurrectionist symbol on their house, to make their neighbor mad. So Alito advertised his political preference, which is wrong. SCOTUS is supposed to be unbiased. This was totally biased just to tweak a neighbor? He violated his stature and code of ethics for SCOTUS. A protester is nowhere on the league of a protester of no obligation to upholding the law of the land than a member of SCOTUS.

4 U.S. Code § 8 - Respect for flag
No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.
(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.
(b) The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.
(c) The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.
(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker’s desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.
(e) The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.
(f) The flag should never be used as a covering for a ceiling.
(g) The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.
(h) The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.
(i) The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.
(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.
(k) The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

But most recently, and disturbingly, flying the flag upside down was co-opted as a symbol of the "Stop the Steal" movement created by Republican political operative Roger Stone in 2016 to promote the illegitimate conspiracy theory. Thus, when The New York Times published a May 26, 2024 article with a photo taken in January 2021 of an upside-down U.S. flag flown at the Alito residence in Alexandria, Virginia, legal ethics experts viewed this as a clear violation of ethics rules. When will Dick Durbin, chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, along with a majority of the U.S. Senate, decide to put forth a Judicial Ethics bill that will effectively police the Supreme Court against such despicable behavior?

Even the Vietnam War was never actually declared a war; it was a mere conflict, despite the 58,220 largely working-class Americans who were killed in it (much to the profit of some whose kids were exempted from the draft). One could say that a country is in distress when 60% of the population would have to borrow money to pay an unexpected $1,000 necessary expense like a car repair or a medical bill (medical bankruptcy is still the largest type of bankruptcy). One could say that there is no longer any federal minimum wage because it is so low relative to the cost of living that it must be considered a slave wage. One could say that a country is in distress when its politicians spend billions of taxpayer money funding an illegal, immoral, genocide instead of funding a universal healthcare system where all lives are treated as equally sacred.

Whether the country is seen as being "in distress" depends largely where you sit geographically and economically. Those who are very comfortable say it isn't in distress. Those who are living paycheck-to-paycheck say it is. And there are huge differences between states, between cities, and even between neighborhoods in cities. Those who are "doing well" tend to be happy with the status quo; those who aren't doing well, despirately feel distress.
A comfortable person may look at a candy bar in a store and say, "Too many calories. I won't buy this." A working-class person may look at the same kind of candy bar while waiting to check himself out and bag his own groceries at Walmart and say, "Too expensive. I can't afford this candy bar. I won't buy this."
All of this is not to say that most comfortable people don't deserve to be comfortable. Nor is it to say that all poor people are poor because it is someone else's fault. It is just to say that a large portion of this country - geographcally and economically - is on the brink.
We the people must make our voices heard over political campaign contributors corrupt and self-aggrandizing influence amplification.
