The amount of back breaking work you've put into that place is staggering. This is going to be lovely when it matures, and the plugs are a clever way of helping it along with varied development. Brava.
You two call it peace ☮️ and is peaceful to watch and patriotic step to nature. I wonder how long till Sasquach find your residence if they didn’t allready. I think they would or are blessed what they see❤❤❤ love and live and live and love❤️ I see them smiling over there. .. the nature is so beautiful ❤❤❤ and it speaks to us if we allows to❤
When plants and beds first go in, there's no telling how it'll turn out. But now that we have 32 months under our belt from when the first shovel and seed hit the earth here, it's really thrilling to see the results. Makes it more exciting to do more... :) Thanks for writing and watching the journey!
OF COURSE I'm here for the plants, the ethos of what you're doing and the ongoing 'story' of Flock Finger Lakes, like everyone else. But I have been very impressed by the hat with the very, very long brim at the start, what a whopper; and the steel guitar music is fantastic! That end shot from a drone at sunset with mist coming in was glorious
Great to see the progress :) Such invaluable content on how to manage and improve more than "just a garden". So much area to work with, making it work for you instead of against you can save you so much headache. And we get to pick up plenty that is also applicable on a smaller scale😄🌳🌿
So excited for the future of Flock Finger Lakes. Such a tranquil vibe. What a privilege it has been seeing the growth and the love for wildlife including deer😅 if i were a chipmunk this is where i would love to be.
Using plugs is a good idea, seeding is cheaper but from other people's experiences you'd find you'd loose a lot of it, this way you can get desirable plants established quicker 💚
Some with rhizomes are tough mothers rooted well in the soil. But with persistence you’ll eventually kill “most” of it. The reason they persist in nature. Don’t envy that. Great work!😅
I love your channel and the transformation of your property, it has been so inspiring. I live in CT and in the process of creating a meadow. Can I ask, where do you get your plug trays? The supplier I use sounds a lot more expensive than what you described paying for plug tray vs 4" pot. Thanks!
The Big Bluestem comes up everywhere by me in August. Reddish Purple seedheads. In August some of the mountains turn brown from annual drought, and when an entire field is covered in mature Big Bluestem it and such a droughted moutain is in the background I say purple waves of grain below Amber mountains.
Very informative video. I am planning a meadow and thought it was appropriate to seed it after the first frost (here in northeast USA). Should I wait to seed until frost, or do before? Thanks for your incredible work! 🌿🍃🌱
We seed before the first frost, generally in September-though our frosts hadn't come the first year we seeded (2021) until early December. But fall is usually a good time to do the seeding. That being said, if you're seeking to seed warm-season grasses, they perform better if seeded in the spring and summer time, as they need the hot weather to emerge. We will likely use the leftover seed to do a second seeding during the spring for that reason. Hope that is useful.
Can you use a pre emergent to kill the weed seeds? We always put it down prior to laying sod or seeding a new lawn. Very interesting. Looking forward to seeing the final product. I am curious how you keep them separated, if that is your goal or if they all intermingle at some point.
Commenting on video # 88. Japanese garden. I was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni Japan in 1976. We might walk down sidewalk and cut a corner and step on couple of small rocks. Huge mistake!! We'd get loudest tongue lashing in history for stepping on someone's beautiful rock formation. So stay on sidewalk!!
Another great video. I have also used the “tarp” method to repurpose an area for replanting. The technique also loosens compacted soil a bit, which is helpful when working new seed in. I converted a hill of ledge wiith a thin layer of topsoil on it to a large wildflower patch. I seeded it in the spring and it really blossomed during the third spring. It was a difficult location to plant anything else. I would be interested in know which vendors you source your bulk seed from. I have had success with products ordered from both Hudson Valley Seed Co. as well as Eden Brothers but am also going to locate and try others.
I would normally go with Ernst, but they are near impossible to work with now; their sales team never returned my calls and emails after I tried to place orders. I liked them because they have regional ecotypes. I did get some seeds from Hudson Valley Seed Co, but also Prairie Moon, and others. It really depended on the seed.
Have you read any articles about solarization? Hopefully the blackness raise the temperatures high enough to kill the seed. Had you placed moisture under it so the temperatures would get even higher. 160°F+ I hadn't seen your other videos though. I buy recycled billboard skins and use them in landscaping as well. I do manage to get a few white backed ones.
I actually didn't buy them mixed. I got the seeds in bulk and then mixed them myself in the buckets. I would normally go to Ernst, but I haven't had any luck with them as of late; their sales department never return emails or calls (at least from me) for ordering; but you can seek out what seeds you're looking for and then purchase them from local growers or habitat restoration places, like Ernst.
@@FlockFingerLakes WOW they are expensive , $300 -$400/lb. but i guess it’s costly to gather these seeds Guess i will have to let nature do its own planting in my meadow
@@FlockFingerLakes thank you for the reply! I am envious, you look like you are having a lot of fun but then spending money and performing hard work is always fun and rewarding
Do you ever think about how a few generations from now will look back on your videos while the walk through the gardens you built and wonder about their founding farmers? There will be robots walking around tending to the garden and projections of you both meandering the fields providing tours to the solar punk kids of the future.
You could grow some edible shrooms on your property for micelium to speak with nature more mulch and logs and you can just make it your self to plant shroom micelium in to logs or hay or mulch and you could allso grow morels ?😅🙏 not much work for oisters and morels you just ned few steps.. you tube it 😅 if you eat mushrooms😅
We wear sunscreen daily and reapply regularly. It's been particularly sunny as of late. Folks often think we are sunburned but red skin on film is often from us not white balancing in advance of shooting; and my inability as an editor to do sophisticated skin color correction. But it's always a great reminder for everyone out there to wear your sunscreen and clothes that protect sensitive skin.
I think the real beauty of Flock is that it is not a commercial / for-profit proejct trying to sell you something. It makes every kind of difference

We definitely feel stronger (and older) some days due to that work!

Love how all your ideas are coming together!
This place will be a plant lovers dream once everything is established!
Thanks for inviting us along

Your land is absolutely breathtaking. Thank you for inviting us on this journey with you.
Thank you for taking the time to enjoy!
My heart is warm and happy every time I see what you do for your land there at Flock. Very inspiring and helpful for me in my garden. Thank you 🙏
The marvellous, wise and hard work of a visionary. Respect!
I love your videos! I learn so much about gardening and the filming is a delight to watch. Great job team!
That's so nice of you to say!

I get a lot of comments on the hat. It's made in Japan. They have very nice outdoor gardening and work clothes I find!

Thank you so much Amber :)

Having planted 300 or so of those plugs, I know that’s hard work. Well done, everything looks fantastic!
Thanks Summer! 🌱
nice work on clearing away the weeds.
looks like it will be a success 🌱
Here's hoping!
This area is going to be gorgeous! I love the plant selection. Keep us updated on the growth!
Best wishes for a bountiful meadow! A beautiful spot and now we need a tour of the remodeled barn. ;-)
That barn remodel should be happening end of this month or next because we still need to get some doors on; and the west side windows in.
Love the use of the recycled billboard!
I've found them to be super useful and more cost-effective than tarps.

Yes it's a good point. May get more bang for the buck that way with plugs. At least it feels like more of a guarantee.
Can't wait for the transformation. You did a good job

It seems to me the bull thistles were the ones I was "pulling up" that were still rooted. Tricky little buggers!
Appreciated the tutorial...Enjoyed the video.
Well done! Can you provide a link for the plugs you purchased? TY
Keep it warm and moist. Add biochar and worm castings if you can
How beaautifull souls you boath are… put a finger in the air and you felt it❤❤❤😊😊😊

Billboards are great, available in all major population centres. All you need is a ladder, a craft knife and a high-vis vest.
We had a good laugh with that one!
What about burning that dry material after removing the tarp? That should kill the seeds.
It definitely came up in conversation to burn it, but we thought against it after how dry it's been the past couple weeks.

What is the song at 22 minutes? It's an awesome soundscape. Reminds me a bit of Time's Blur by Lord Huron
Found it with Shazam: Wanting You by Jamison Dewlen
I'd be careful with which seeds you cover with straw. Some seed need full sun to germinate
We'll have to take our chances because I think the birds will be a greater threat. But I suppose we can say, "May the best seeds survive!" :)
PLEASE wear sunscreen!!! Modern day UV is no joke! Im a landscaper in NY & deal with basil cell carcinoma on regular basis
