      @@gewglesux exclusively since 79. ripped out the frets from an old Ibanez then played an aluminium necked Travis Bean which would never stay in tune due to temperature changes, thus giving his heavy vibrato/portmento technique. he then had a pair of Wal's made (the Tulipwood topped on being the most famous that turns up on Japans Tin drum and Oil on Canvas lps...the other was cherry) and in his later years he had Klein graphite headless made.

    I did very detailed research on this & came up with the following for every musician onstage here (yes, I had too much time on my hands!!):
    Midge Ure (James Ure) - guitar, vox, md
    Midge Ure All Star Band (Prince's Trust All Star Band)-
    Brian May - guitar
    Howard Jones - keys
    Mick Karn (Andonis Michaelides) - bass
    Mark "the Octopus" Brzezicki - drums
    Phil Collins - drums
    Gillian O'Donovan - b.vox
    Suzie O'List - b.vox
    Gary Barnacle - tenor saxophone
    Barry Gardner - flugelhorn
    John Thirkell - trumpet
    Luke Tunney - trumpet
    Pete Thoms - trombone

    I watched this live performance on DVD sometime back in 2004. I was blown away by Mick Karn's melodic bass lines and how he made this song really stand out compared to Ultravox's original studio version. This was my most favorite part of the Prince's Trust concert and I must have played this rendition of Dancing With Tears In My Eyes a thousand times.
    That DVD of mine is sadly long gone, so thanks so much for uploading this on YT! ❤️🙏🏼

  • @williamross2579

    Mick had to learn all the performers songs by ear, what you hear is entirely his interpretation, he didn’t read music, he didn’t even know the notes on the fingerboard... at the end of his career he didn’t even tune up as he could compensate for slight off tuning... a completely original voice in music. RIP Karnivore

    A bit too shouty for its own good and Midge mangles the lyrics a bit too. Otehrwise a pretty good AOR version. That's what he should've done to crack America in those days - instead of limp "Answers to nothing".

  • @espresso5150
    @espresso5150 Рік тому +1

    Shame, he wrecks the guitar solo and syarts playing in the wrong key..I think it's the monitors. May blasts in at then but Midge could have done a fast guitar solo and gone for it.

    • @StratmanII
      @StratmanII 4 місяці тому

      I thought I was the only one who felt the guitar was slightly out of tune and that Midge's playing wasn't articulate enough. Live performances are either a hit or miss but this song's guitar solo is technically simple and he initially played the wrong notes. I like this performance only because of Mick Karn's melodic bass lines.

  • @tertia0011
    @tertia0011 Рік тому +2

    Mick Karn's bass so good it competes with melodic line of singer & helps ruin performance. Then again the whole musical setup is unbalanced & singer struggles with song. This is one of the worst recordings of Ultravox I have heard. Even trumpet is heard blaring. Truly awful.

  • @Okkvltify

    • @mrmarshmadness1
      @mrmarshmadness1 3 роки тому +3

      Not necessarily bad but I think he did overplay the tune a bit. Even so it's nice to hear this with an actual bass part rather than synth

    • @NotMarkKnopfler
      @NotMarkKnopfler 2 роки тому +1

      I was thinking the same thing! I like Karn's playing - you know it's him when you hear him, and that's a good thing - but I think he over-playing here. It was like 'lead bass' all the way through the song! And Ure's guitar was flat!

    • @nickavenoso7851
      @nickavenoso7851 2 роки тому +2

      From what I heard, he had to learn all the musicians songs by ear. Didn’t read tabs, music, nothing and his bass was slightly out of tune, but he dealt with it.

  • @chillidogkev
    @chillidogkev 8 місяців тому +3

    A mess at best. Too much going on creating pure sonic confusion. Horns? Don't be ridiculous. What on earth song was the bass player trying to perform. Lastly, would have helped if everyone was in tune. Meanwhile, Midge Ure rises above the chaos and delivers a good performance...thankfully.
