- E131 : So you purchased an Amiga what do you do now?
There are many ways and opinions on how to get going, this is just MY way of getting started. You can expand as much as you want, this method using a Amiga/Gotek and Amigaforever can get you running with only a few additional purchases. Sure you can get a RGB monitor , sure you can purchase an Accelerator, or other hard drives . This is the bare bones approach. Below is a listed group of general Ebay searches for the items I use in this video. * i accidentally edited out the portion of needing a USB to serial cable, these are readily available from most computer stores for under 15$. SORRY!
Scart2HDMI - www.ebay.com/s...
23pin amiga to scart. www.ebay.com/s...
Gotek - www.ebay.com/s...
AmigaForever - Amigaforever.com - legal access to workbench and noms for the C= Amiga
Note* 2:32 *Amiga forever Value edition comes with workbench 1.3 25 games and 25 demoscene demos
29.95 plus edition gives you all the noms 0.7-3/1 and all workbench versions, 65 games and 100 demos and some old pictures, and is the one I use.
The premium gives you all the same and 3 dvd disks of old videos from commodore and dave haynie deathbed vigil
3:23 FlashFloppy - firmware for the gotek available for free here. github.com/kei...
I GOT ONE!!! I FOUND AN AMIGA 500!!! It's on the way from Conn, US to me now. I have a feeling I'm going to be watching a LOT of your videos. I already bought Amiga Forever so I have kickstart roms for emulation but now WHOA BABY. I DON'T EVNE KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MYSELF! *breathes* I am going to start here... with this video. It's the console, mouse, power adapter and 520 adapter. I think I need more but, super excited to be part of the community.
welcome aboard. the A520 will allow you to hook it up to a old display, composite or rf/component for a basic screen, hope it has some workbench disks. at least to get you started. i would get either a pi2hdmi for it or one of those chinesium adaptors and a db23 to scart cable to connect it to an hdmi display. i hope you get to enjoy it. they are addicting... i own 16 amigas now. every model except the 3000T and the 4000T.
Hey there, I realise this is a late reply, but... How much did it cost you, if you dont mind me asking?! ✌🏼😊👍🏼 🤔
@@nickthelick No worries. Probably between parts over multiple eBay auctions, around $1000
@@vault60.overseer10 Wow!
About £880 (Pounds💷Sterling)
Ouch!
Christ, back in 1989/1991 they cost around £400-£500 (depending on spec.)... But then of course there's inflation and all that bollocks too... But even so, wow! I'm... pleasantly surprised!
Enjoy though, Amigas ARE great fun, and WERE definitely dominant back then for a reason! (Even if it wasn't for that long really... I loved mine. Though I could never bring myself to buy a PC to use for gaming - so Sony PlayStation took a hold of my soul instead...!) 🤔 😉
I'm gonna give Syndicate a play on my A1200 later I think...
✌🏼😁👍🏼
✌🏼😊👍🏼
@@nickthelick It's because I added a scsi2sd adapter "external HDD" and I have the 1010,1011 and gotek mods installed
Nice work mate! Keep it up! I want to keep my A500 stock on the inside but I'm going to take time to watch your whole video in detail as I just find it interesting what CAN be done these days. Subbed.
I am from the uk and i own 3 amiga500 computers which are boxed and stored for posterity. they are all in their original condition and never modified with all original peripherals like the mouse etc...i very occasionally get one out and use for about an hour..i have ordered an amiga500 mini purely for the convenience and ease of use..i am of the mindset that i can preserve the 3 originals for osterity....thank you.
I had a 500+ BITD when I lived in the UK. Loved that machine.
Now in Canada, I have a nice A1200, but I’ve never actually got around to using it.
I want to change that, so thanks for some good info here 😃
Your videos are growing on me. Good job and thank you. 👍🏻
Thank you. I don't know anything about Commodores and Amigas (I was always an Apple kid), but am enjoying playing around with Amiga Forever and learning about the history of these computers. Most Amiga videos just talk about the games, which is cool, but I'm more interested in the other aspects of computing.
Same here... Amiga's were so fun. Everybody had an 500 back in the days. And nobody had Apple stuff. Well.... That was how it was in Denmark from around 1988 to somewere around 1992. People only first started to get Mac, after the iPod was released.
Well, you know, the Amiga team did include an Apple guy (as well as two Atari geniuses, two people from Williams (including one that worked on Sinistar arcade), and a number of other clever people. A very small team with an extremely low budget.
I like this style of gonzo video making, it's much like my own channel. Planning to cover Amiga games at some point so this was really helpful. Thanks.
cool video.ive not long had my gotek and I'm having a problem when saving a game or career in SWOS it will work ok then suddenly after a while i get disk error come up for no reason. its happened twice now the first time was half way through my a season in career mode and the last time i had completed the full season in career mode saved it and the next time i came to play it the save disk said disk error. any idea's why? has anyone in the comments had this? or does any one play swos with a gotek and have it saving ok i cant work out why it does it
Sweet video Chris, I am about to score an Amiga 500 in this same scenario. Pretty stoked for it.
The best computer Ii ever had.... I love itt.. It loved translating AmigaOS 3.5 and 3.9 to spanish by the way...
I was looking for something about upgrading the A500. Good to know it'll take newer Kickstarts.
Keep your Kick 1.2/1.3 around since 2.x and up kills a lot of game compatibility.
Best thing is get an A1200. Use the pcmcia slot to transfer files from pc to amiga using sd card. Download ADFs and use adf2disk to write to real floppy disk. OR get SDcard HDD (cheap), get ram expansion and use WHDload for the win
It's a simple mod to install a DF0/DF1 switch, which allows you to use an external Gotek as DF0 and not sacrifice the internal drive.
Excellent video bravo!!!
I had been given an old Amiga 500, years ago without disks, power brick or any discs. Every time I go to pick it up to think about doing something with it, the idea of buying a bunch of adapters and even getting discs for it has always stopped me from going all the way with it, especially not even knowing if it works at all.
Gotek is a usb drive floppy emulator would help you out greatly. There are also many things for this machine that you can modernize it with.
For the fast and cheap way it’s a nice route to enjoy a A500. Have go to the expensive route to enjoy WHDLoad with WB 3.1.4.1. Have a ACA500plus V1 which is a must for a A500. Got the ACA1233n-55 RTC and have on the motherboard a ACE2 and a Indivision ECS V1. Hook it up with a BenQ BL702A VGA 17 inch monitor and Bose speakers. Waiting for the black A500 case, black keycaps and the black tankshell from A1200NET. It’s a Beast and have enough power to do the most things.
Have also the A1200 which have a A1200 CD32 case and keycaps from A1200NET. And the motherboard is recaped with red caps. Have a Indivision AGA MK2CR and a nice Blizzard 1230 IV with FPU and 128MB. Would do a second A1200 which is black and waiting for thd black keycaps from A1200NET. And would a Indivision AGA MK3 and the ACA1260.
Got two great 68030 cards and this year i would have two great 68060 cards. The Blizzard 1260 and the ACA1260.
There are so many ways to upgrade a A500 and the A1200. And have 16GB CF on the ACA500Plus and 32GB on the A1200. WB 3.1 with BetterWB 4.3 is the limit 8GB CF with WB 3.1.4.1 the limit is 128GB CF. The only problem it’s the CF speed on the A500 it’s fast 7.5MB/s but on my A1200 slow 1.6MB/s. Maybe with a FastATA it wil be faster. The ACA1260 have a IDE Speeder on it. The Blizzard have a SCSI Kit but to IDE is not a great route to take.
I also like to use the diskdrive to install WB 3.1.4 and BestWB. Install on a real AMIGA is nicer than on a PC.
So many abbreviations
Chris I took your advice, I picked up an Amiga 600 with a Gotek Drive and Kickstart 3.1 installed along with 16GB SD card whats the best OS to install on the SD Card ?
well with 3.1 roms 3.1 it is, OR you can say F it, and get an A630 accelerator, it has a 68030, 64mb ram and a fpu, its fast and you also get the 3.2.1 rom/sw set and then
can run OS3.2.1 the latest. you can get it all at retrorewind.ca and use my code NOCODE (once signed in at checkout) and save 10%
I'm glad you showed using RAMDISK for the AExplorer; hadn't thought of that yet. I haven't been able to get AE to respond so quickly though. Maybe my serial cable is too long?
Wow, you talk fast. :) I'm 63 and have gone through this (several times), so it's not a problem...
@@bobrandale4864 sorry i talk fast.
Chris Edwards I’m getting used to it. Keep up the good work!
I have Amiga 3000 in my retrocomputer collection). What can I relly do with it besides games ? I downloaded tonns of software, what I have to install that allows me to make 3d animation or music ? I have in it 2+8mn ram, SCSI_>SD device and gotek floppy emulator)
So so much more
@Chris Edwards I think you forgot to mention you need to purchase a Null Modem cable and which one you used. :)
woops, it was in the original edit... but is in the desc parts list.,
Watched it all the way through this time. I wish I had taken your advice as soon as I got my 500+. Question for you. Since the CD32 has 2MB of ram, can I use the serial port on it to copy stuff over to a ram disk with AmigaExplorer to run some stuff that doesn't need floppy emulation, like SysInfo, and other utilities?
you sure can
👍🏻 I have an Amiga 1200 now what?
hey I have an Amiga 1200 and all I want to do is run games I don't need a gotek drive I want to know how to make my own copies of roms on to Floppy diskett but every time I try to run games or copy game roms to floppy it doesn't work it refuses now it should be possible to do this because they had to of been able to get the games on Floppy in the first place. can you help me ?
Greaseweasle allows you
To do all amiga
Stuff from Adf To Disk on your pc. But again thats why we use goteks
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration but isn't there a way I can make copies of copy protected games on to floppy. you know like Piracy but with out the ability to Actually buy the games since the Original Games disks are so astronomically Expensive that they are basicly unobtainium.
@@Shadowfoxxy30 ADF's are digital amiga disks, hence Amiga D isk Format aka ADF. you can write and read them to actual floppy if you wish, but most of us use the digital versions of the disk drive with the Gotek drives as it is simple and a easy way to have thousands on a single usb stick and scroll through them and boot what we want. saving the disk swaps and drive wear on our old stuff, sure you can cop them.
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration thank you I'll think about picking up a gotec or some other form of Floppy Emulator that works with the Amiga 1200
Now what? Well PiStorm that sucker and put in a RGB2HDMI adapter, and an A314 to put 3 Pi's in your A500plus.
I really would like to buy an A1200 again, but the prices are prohibitive. Moreover I'm afraid to spend for it due to the problem of battery leaking and because of a probably needed recap
I have 3 or 4 1200's most have odd composite shadow issues, so I'm working on them.
Recapping didnt fix it, video upgrade didnt fix it...
I will figure it out someday.
Me too. i sold my old one for 200$ in 1995 when i quit working at the Amiga repair shop. if i only had it now... also sold my A1000 because i had a 2000 and the 500... slap myself every day...
Chris Edwards I still have my 2 1000’s, and my 2000, and my 3000...
@@SuperVstech wanna sell a 1000 ?
Chris Edwards both are in poor shape, attic stored for 15plus years. Sure.
Plug it in and see if it works.
I don't have an Amiga server ......where do I find sysinfo? Is it on one of the disks ( original or Amiga Forever)?
Sysinfo is everywhere. Bootable adf. Google it
I got a copy 3.1.4 for my 1200 back in 2018 and I managed to burn my own kick roms for it.
An 500.... What to do? That is easy. Get a mem upgrade, scandoubler and a gotek that can be mounted internally. That however, is only if you want to use it for games exclusivly. If you can source a flatscreen LCD monitor that does 50hz, then get a ScanPlusECS, as they do 50hz only and if you are only using PAL system and games. For NTSC, go for IndivisionECS V1 or V2.
good luck still finding scandoublers that dont cost 4 arms and a kidney
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration Well.... I don't think they are that expensive if you look at what it is. Amiga's are a hobby, just as vintage HIFI and vintage cars, not a toy. It is a niche hobby. 99 euro are actually cheap.
Maybe someone can help me. My Amiga 500 has internal Gotek drive. My problem is when I select any multi adf game in slots 19,20,21..I hit F10 (save &reset), BUT intead of autostart slot 19, Amiga always start adf from slot 1. Any help please...
Ditch the numeric loader and use flashfloppy not hxc. Get a oled screen on it and it will show you what disk is in
I dont know how to do that. On my Amiga everything looks like Amiga on your video, but for some reason I cant have same result as you. Can you please give me more info how to do that.
Thank you so much....
I have found solution. When you power on Amiga with Gotek drive we have, lets say 2 screens: First screen shows list of all files stored on flesh disk, and second screen shows list of slots with (previosly) loaded adf-s. Now, if (on second screen) you highlight E.g. slot 22 and press F7, Amiga wil reset and start booting with slot 22. If, during a gaming you need to load slot 23, just pres one of two little buttons on Gotek.
I must say that I am realy impresed with what you did with Pimiga. I learned from you so much about Amiga.
Thank you!!
@@dejannikolic7121 wow thats not a flashfloppy config thats in HxCmode, you should use Keir Frasiers Flashfloppy.
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration
Actually, my problem solved Keir Fraser on GitHub.
But I don`t understand one thing: In your video you copied two files on USB flesh disk: HXCSDFE.CFG and AUTOBOOT.HFE. I also have these files on my USB + flashfloppy-3.42.upd + FF Gotek-3.42.upd), and since you told that my GOTEK is in HxC mode, I assume that your`s is too.
So, If all this is correct, why your GOTEK did work, and my don`t ? :))))
I have tried to make my own USB following instructions on GitHub flashploppy and your video. I formated USB (fat32), copied HXCSDFE.CFG and AUTOBOOT.HFE, in USB root, but it wont work (media attached error).
Do I miss something important? I have A500 with internal GOTEK.
When I opened my 500 after aquiring a torx wrench, I dicovered commodore went bankrupt!
I dunno. Rub it on your chest?
0:52 if you buy something dont drow them away. they cost more now than original lol. if you bought 1000 floppies thats cool you saved money. go buy 1000 floppies now xD
Dont need to. I have 1000
Maybe I should get one of those Amigo computers. Do they run my PeeCee games? I heard they are worse than Atari ST? Is that true? I can just put my Commodore 64 disks in there, right? 😉
@Mr Guru I amuse myself. That is what really matters! ;)
Bahaha nice one Doug :D
Nope, that slot on the right is for warming those mini pancakes in.
Why would one buy a virtual floppy drive vs just getting a Compact Flash to IDE adapter?
Because we still access programs on disk. And with bitrot old tech and dying media this preserves it in a way we can still access it and use it like it used to be just in digital form
there is no IDE inside A500...
I use Amiga Forever by Cloneto
.
The company that sells the workbench and ROMS no longer makes them for the Amiga 500. So I have a working machine to sell off the expensive parts. I got it without any floppies. Now, a year later, they are no longer available. I was looking forward to learning a bone stock 500 and updating it as a future project .
There are plenty of places that sell roms and things
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration P.S. - my 500 has a Rev 5 board and they make a big deal out of that and I am not sure why; it looks very close to a REV 3 board. I had to order a special version for the REV 5 Amiga 500 PCB. They don't mention anything about the Rev 6 PCB. I also found out when I opened everything up, I have a 512MB Fast Ram Expansion board with RTC with a varta battery giving up its guts, but not too bad.
512K you mean? @@Daveyk021
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration I'd have to look again, but I'm sure you're right, it's 512K; sorry. That it a fairly old looking board in a metal shield box; MicroBotics M501 RAM expansion).
Sadly my floppy drive doesn't work on my amiga 1200 now this is basically a common fault
Have you tried another drive to see if its the amiga or the drive
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration I will probably try another drive
"So you bought an amiga now what ?"
install NASP
No point in messing around with 3.1.4 on an A500.
@Neb6 Well, I'd kinda have to update my statement since the PiStorm came out recently, boosting the A500 performance massively. so 3.1.4 would make more sense.
But then, with the PiStorm you can just load the ROMs from it's SD card.
1:06 yes or you can wait 3.2 coming 3.2.1 3.3.3 i guess have to come lets wait FINAL cant they just do final version lol
But first see if it is one that has battery leakage.
@Mr Guru which is why I said FIRST SEE IF IT IS ONE that has battery leakage.
The A500, if it has the 501 ram/clock expansion, DOES potentially have the potential for battery damage.
As do nearly all the other amiga models.
Only in the 500 and some mem expansions. And you can spot if it is an 500-Plus, because it is written on the case if it is one.
nope i still have my amiga. tell that to apple. next year you have to buy bit better full price upgrade
How do you do all this rubbish without a PC I've got a go take I've got a four gig internal memory card nothing works so went back to the old way all the waste of time
we didnt have pc's back then... we had AMIGA. you can use some assistance, like build stuff on winuae or whatever, this was just a what now. basics kind of thing. there are a million ways to do anything.
This video is just what I been needing for my 2 Amiga 500s - which are sitting collecting cob webs. Your knowledge is great and helpful. But you bumble and mumble through it all assuming we have the experience you have. You could slow down a bit and speak more clearly and explain things more. Are you in a hurry or are you trying to help us out?? It is hard to tell??
Ok sorry. Sometimes my delivery is like drinking through a firehose
A500 is 1,2 and later 1,3 Rom A500+ is v2.0 ROM
my a500 came with 2.0
Chris Edwards then it had a upgrade rom
oooohhhh... *eyes wide open* Reliving the old days. ...thats what i would've been saying :/
sticking all ad's on flash drive, or replace floppy is all well and good, but ts not the nostalgic way. Not true anyway i don't think. It your gonna open the Amiga up anyway, why not just do what A1200 users do.. ad a SD card to interface on board...
FYI: Cloanto will be working on a Mac version: www.amigaforever.com/mac .. however,, in the meantime you can use FS-UAE as well.
Just get 1200 immediately
most people get 500's, 1200's are getting super expensive in 2020 at least in the USA where I am.
Make a youtube video...
Now what?
Nothing. You can play whit this sample of modern antiques piece some time... until you realize that any modern computer is a million times better. Amiga is dead in 1994. the rest is nostalgia
then your not a die hard amiga fan.
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration Very true. I'm not usually a fan of any brand of appliances. However, it is incredible that if one tries to do a historical research on a brand, videos of enthusiastic people from the good old days always pop up, even if we can now easily talk about computer necrophilia.
be smart and use a emulator on your pc and leave the trash in the bin
