History and Song Index
In August of 1978, Lenny Breau and Buddy Emmons recorded the album "Minors Aloud" in Nashville for Flying Fish Records. The album was released towards the end of the year but the duo did not tour to support it (although they may have played a few gigs in Nashville after the sessions and before the album's release).
At that time, Buddy played occasionally with guitarist Danny Gatton in a band called Red Neck Jazz Explosion (which sometimes included Lenny's old pal, fiddler Buddy Spicher). RNJE played a memorable gig at the Cellar Door in Washington DC on December 31st, 1978 that was recorded and released on NRG Records as "Danny Gatton's RedNeck Jazz Explosion (still in print).
The band was booked for a return gig at the Cellar Door in late April of 1979 and Buddy invited Lenny, who had just finished recording an album with Claude Ranger and Don Thompson in Nashville, to come to DC to play a set with RNJE at their Cellar Door gig. Danny Gatton was a huge fan of Lenny's and eager to have Lenny sit in.
Lenny and the band played two songs from 'Minors Aloud": 'Secret Love' (included here) and ' Killer Joe' . Lenny also played on 'Misty' and Hank Garland's tune 'Riot Chorus' (aka Riot- Chous)
1. Riot Chorus (aka Riot Chous)
2. Misty
3. Deep Purple
4. Secret Love

Wow. Arguably the two greatest guitarists to every walk the earth. Amazing.
*Three greatest
Danny can play jazz :O I always thought he could kind of play it but this guy absolutely kills it.
Ain’t nothin that guy couldn’t play
That is just ridiculous! Thank you for posting.
Ridiculous would be an understatement
Never knew they had been playing together, Great stuff
Add me to the club of ignorants! I’ve seen Lenny, heard both Danny and Buddy, but the three together with a crackpot rhythm section? Insane!
It kills me that I lived just over the Potomac river from this venue at the time and could have been there to see this show. But I didn't know either one at the time, that I recall. Somehow, their careers missed me util it was too late. I wish I had a time machine.
Stunning, just stunning interplay between these two musical geniuses.
This is pure gold!
Wonderful, thank you! Love seeing these new uploads!!
The most awesome masters of the instruments. I have seen Emmons several times but never had the opportunity for Gatton or Breau. But I'm a major fan. Thanks.
Off the charts, good!
Sure wish they'd let Danny solo on Secret Love!
Being an enormous Lenny fan these uploads make me dance all day... Great! Thanks!
I’ve heard about it ,now I’ve got to hear it here ,wow ! Thanks 😎
I'm talking a much higher level of understanding... just sick.i loved it
Lenny playing Buddy's licks back at him during Deep Purple, and Gatton (I think) getting a chuckle out of it in the background always made me laugh. Even the greats enjoy some good natured musical teasing sometimes
Absolutely fantastic. Exactly how many more recordings like these do you have?? Keep 'em coming and thanks a million!
We have nearly a hundred recordings on the You Tube Lenny Breau Archives channel and there's still considerable amount of good material to come.
Wow fantastic this is simply the best!
magnificent!!!!
OOOOOOH YAAAAAAAA!!!!
Man, that is sweet!
Such a nice treat to hear know that more and more Lenny material is being released. Thank you!!!!
He played all that happy crappy music could!!!! Music is in the ear of the beholder!
My god Danny was flyin
Please see video description for history and song index.
Lenny sounds good
I think Danny Gatton was a guy that has not been matched when it comes to playing notes. His technique is just off the charts.
He was a beast....Lenny too
Yeah! 😄👍
odd that the original playing order was:
01 deep purple
02 secret love *
03 killer joe
04 riot chorus *
Who’s on traps and electric bass?
Check the video description for details.
A real shame having someone with this mastery of a guitar and playing so much crappy music that hardly anyone wants to listen to.
It’s lonely on the leading edge. This music was never intended to be content or a product. It’s just dudes baring there souls and having a beautiful musical conversation.
Good Gracious!!!!
