  • In October of 1979, Lenny Breau and his girlfriend Sinde Shubert arrived at the Los Angeles airport where they were met by saxophonist Scott Page who had invited Lenny to stay at his home until he was settled in the city. Scott brought along his friend Ted Greene and Ted's partner Barbara. Ted was an enormous fan of Lenny's and had long been looking forward to meeting him.
After arriving at Scott's house that afternoon, Lenny and Ted spent several hours jamming, showing each other arrangements of tunes and discussing techniques and other subjects. Scott Page recorded the entire ten hour session which we are presenting in edited form in three parts.
In Part One, Lenny plays several tunes associated with Bill Evans on classical guitar. The pieces are rich with Evans- like chords and harmonic structures that Lenny had been working on for several years. Unfortunately Lenny never recorded most of these tunes nor are there any recorded examples of his developing technique for playing melody over chordal harmonics which he demonstrates to Ted in this recording.
Lenny also plays his own unfinished composition Song for Sinde, discusses McCoy Tyner and plays Tyner's composition, Vision.
The recording finishes with Lenny playing Jerry Reed's version of Don't Think Twice, after which Lenny discusses Reed's picking style and provides examples.

I was lucky to have met Lenny Breau in 1976, my wife's father played with lone pine, Lenny's father in Maine. Lenny came to visit my father-in-law Ray Couture, who was a great guitar player. Lenny decided he would stay with my wife and I, because Ray lived in a very rural area of Ohio, and Lenny didn't drive. He stayed with us for 3 months, I had never seen such incredible guitar playing in my life, Lenny could play all genres of music. It was a wonderful experience for me and my wife, one that I will cherish always.

What a great version from Lenny of 'A Time For Love'. You can really hear how he has internalized Bill's arrangement and many of the voicings he used but also extended it while making it work on a much more constrained instrument that the guitar is.
No noodling. Every note counts, beautifully articulated. Yet the tune is played just like that, casually.
And those gorgeous perfect harp harmonics at the end.
This feels like eavesdropping on Mozart and Beethoven chatting over beers making discoveries about the soul of jazz guitar together.
Lenny and Ted are seriously consisering how to answer to the challenges posed by (pianists) Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett and McCoy Tyner. Now how many guitar players are willing to even dream of such?

This is super. I took lessons from Ted Greene in 1982-84 and always considered him to be one of the true greats. But it is interesting to see him completely defer to Lenny here, even asking at 8:40 "I hope you don't mind me getting close to watch, man...into your space." Ted knew he was in the presence of a master -- Lenny was, indeed, special.

The respect ran both ways. Lenny raves about Ted further on in the conversation which we will be presenting in time, particularly Ted's mastery of voicings and knowledge of scales. Thanks for you input!

as much as Lenny was a totally different species of player, the music knowledge that ted had was, and is unrivaled.

Wow, the fabled meeting. Very grateful this exists and is being shared, truly treasured. Thanks for what you do sharing these. You may want to reach out to someone who could clean up the audio, there’s some amazing software out there from izotope and others that could remove the buzz and clarify the guitar and voices.

Glad you like it! We do our best to clean up the audio before posting with two audio restoration programs that we use. But there's only so much that can be done and no amount of work with excellent software will return these old (cassette usually) copy of copy of copies to their original condition, which was often horrendous to begin with. This recording in particular was in dreadful shape when we got it and we worked very hard to get it into the condition that it appears in here. Some portions of it were virtually unlistenable and no amount of restorative work could improve on it so we were forced to edit it out. We do appreciate the feedback but there really is only so much that can be done with these recordings.

Ted died at age 62 and of course Lenny at only age 43. Two absolute genius players. What a shame their get together was not recorded in a studio with proper lighting and hi-def A/V equipment.

After decades of using "pull-offs" in blues & rock groups, it turns out that simply taking one's finger off a fretted note to let a lower fretted-note play is an entirely different skill, a necessary skill when the harmonics of both notes are the issue.

Is Lenny playing with 7 or 6 strings?

    • @jerryrobertsguitars

Likely it is the japanese 7string dauphin classical which i sold him when he was living in nashville. It was stock except that i made a new bone nut to improve the string spacing. Later on kirk sand did some further improvements on that one. I think it was Lenny’s first 7string. I think it is the one in the photo.
