I'm living in Asia, and I own a normal saloon car. It's cost me USD 16k, and my country's fuel price is USD 0.44 per litre. I sometimes feel it's hard to maintain my daily expenses. Imagine what it is like to live in America at the expense of fuel consumption. I'm proud and happy not to have been born in the USA.

The west have seen China has basically become the lead producer and market for EV. And it's going to be very, very difficult for them to catch up not only in terms of technology, but in terms of marketing and sales. So they will try to retain their advantages in terms of fossil fuel cars and try to continue to battle it out in the Chinese Market with fossil fuel cars because they can't beat Chinese manufacturers in the electric vehicles. And then they would like the rest of the world to also delay the adaptation of electric vehicles and stick to more fossil fuel vehicles in which the Western producers have a distinct advantage given their long history of producing and developing these cars. And the government, the Western government, in particular the United States and the EU have now come up with all kinds of plans to sabotage China's export of electric vehicles. Now they no longer do they talk about free trade or fair market practice. Now they're saying that US is going to prohibit in effect, the importation of Chinese made electric vehicles or even Chinese made but made in Mexico or assembled in Mexico. So they will have restrictions on components. Components have to be made in the United States. So all of a sudden on the fairness side, one can see how ridiculous it's gotten. Now US is restricting Chinese electric vehicles forget about cilmate change, forget about carbon emissions and forget about fossil fuel pollution. We got to block the Chinese electric vehicles. Now Europeans are looking at doing the same thing on batteries or electric vehicles in China. All of a sudden the Green Party, those who got into their position because of their espousing Green or climate issues, all of the sudden is now wanting to restrict Chinese electric vehicles. Now again, this is if we win, if we are on top, let's have free market. If we are at a distinct disadvantage, we have to restrict, control or prohibit it. We have to use heavy duty to block their entry into our markets. Protectionism becomes a weapon. Forget about protection of the cilmate and the Earth. We just have to be on top. If we're not on top, forget about the Earth. This is really absurd. The more they restrict competition, the more advantages of the Chinese EV manufacturers will be even more advance because if you restrict competition, your own automakers don't have to work very hard to enter into your protected market, but they will not be able to compete on a global basis. And this is what' going to happen in the near future. The electric vehicle market i just don't see it fading away. EU and US can try to block Chinese EVs. But given the distinct advantage of EV which now already has become well-known to the masses of consumers in the world, just the Global South alone will pick up the slack and start importing Chinese made EVs. This will really enhance further development if the EV market worldwide. As you'll know there are many developing countries which don't have oil and have to import oil and have to import processed oil in the form of gasoline or diesel. Now with electricity becoming widespread among the developing countries, electric systems, electric vehicles will gain just in terms of its cost-benefit ratio, it will be even more popular, more advanced in the developing countries in the Global South. So the electric vehicle manufacturers of China should start looking at the Global South more aggressively and start building network there.
China should look towards the south. Because we don't want their ev here. In fact during and after COVID it was said. And then reiterated after Ukraine. That the U.S. was diversifying and decoupling from China. It was announced under Trump. It was reiterated a little more gentle under biden. The policy has not changed. By definition that means LESS Chinese products not more. And after review of our supply in the U.S. the committee doing the research came back with lists of things that need to be reshored locally or produced with less outside dependence. At the same time you will notice investment into China has also been in decline. This isn't going to change anytime soon. It's been a slow transition for a few years now. It may in fact only speed up if geopolitical tensions continue to rise. At the very least this should be a warning to American companies operating in China to prepare for a exit.

What is over capacity? Every country subsidizes its own industries, especially in renewable energy. Tesla is the largest producer of EVs, therefore it has over capacity and should be curtailed.

It really doesn't matter if we have 100% tariff on Chinese cars. What's the Chinese dominate in every country except the United States the United States won't be able to export any of their cars because nobody wants them as they are too expensive. So eventually the American manufacturers will have to find a way to compete or just sell all their cars domestically because they can't sell any of their cars overseas.
It would be a much better move for the US based big 3 automakers to establish joint venture agreements with some of the well established Chinese EV makers. Chinese EVs could be built or assembled in the US using Chinese parts and American labour. Over the years the big three automakers showed little interest in making small cars as the profit margin was so low. Why not let the Chinese car makers have this share of the EV market and continue to make / focus on larger EVs with higher margins? They are essentially losing nothing. Doing this would put a lot of inexpensive EVs on the market in a short period of time which would accelerate the deployment of charging stations, service an repair depots, etc. It would also help to meet climate initiatives. This would create a win-win scenario rather than imposing mindless protectionism.

The two sides shared the experiences and challenges regarding their respective climate policies and actions, and further expressed their intention to engage in related technical and policy exchange. The two sides intend to host a second “Methane and Non-CO2 Greenhouse Gases Summit” at COP 29 and look forward to the China-US High-Level Event on Subnational Climate Action, to be held 29th and 30th May, in Berkeley, California. In that context which need to point out that despite its professed willingness to strengthen cooperation with China on climate change, the US has been hyping up the so-called “overcapacity” in China’s new energy sector and vowing to impose additional tariff hikes on Chinese electrical vehicles and solar products. The fast-growing Chinese new energy industries are what the world economy needs for green transition. It serves the interest of China, the US, and the whole world. US to abandon its hypocrisy and double standard, and not to make the same mistake of resorting to protectionism.
I understand the desire to bolster American manufacturing and American jobs, but… the last I checked, the climate crisis doesn't stop at any country's borders. We now need to get rid of tailpipes worldwide, and if that means allowing Chinese EVs to be sold in the USA… so be it!

Jeffery Sachs can be depended on to provide an opinion criticizing US policy. I don't know if he's ever offered an opinion supporting US policy in the last 2 decades. But, let's just consider whether the tariffs are justified as "unfair advantage" rather than fair competition. China has already tried to dump cars domestically earlier this year, and there were reports that China was trying to sell EVs at about half price after discounts. That suggests US tariffs aren't excessive or extraordinary if the US consumer saw similar prices... a typical $40,000 list EV was selling for about $20,000. Without better analysis which might not be available in China's opaque data reporting it can be assumed that government subsidies up and down the supply chain make it possible to offer such steep discounts. The first thing to consider is whether anything sold at that steep a discount is normally possible. Wherever you may be, how many things can you buy that's marked off half price? Is that fair to competitors and would you buy an American manufactured EV for twice the price of an imported Chinese EV? That said, I assume that the 100% tariffs although likely doesn't apply to all situations. Before this recent announcement, Chinese SUVs have been selling in the US under the Volvo brand. The originally Swedish manufacturer sold itself to the Chinese manufacturer Gee about 10 years ago and technically has been a Chinese manufacturer since, although not necessarily selling EVs. By buying the Volva brand,, the operations and history working with the US regulatory agencies were bought, too and AFAIK hasn't caused problems. That may be the blueprint to enter the US marketplace without creating waves.... Partner with an existing reputable company that knows US requirements.

So they will try to retain their advantages in terms of fossil fuel cars and try to continue to battle it out in the Chinese Market with fossil fuel cars because they can't beat Chinese manufacturers in the electric vehicles. And then they would like the rest of the world to also delay the adaptation of electric vehicles and stick to more fossil fuel vehicles in which the Western producers have a distinct advantage given their long history of producing and developing these cars.
And the government, the Western government, in particular the United States and the EU have now come up with all kinds of plans to sabotage China's export of electric vehicles. Now they no longer do they talk about free trade or fair market practice. Now they're saying that US is going to prohibit in effect, the importation of Chinese made electric vehicles or even Chinese made but made in Mexico or assembled in Mexico. So they will have restrictions on components. Components have to be made in the United States. So all of a sudden on the fairness side, one can see how ridiculous it's gotten.
Now US is restricting Chinese electric vehicles forget about cilmate change, forget about carbon emissions and forget about fossil fuel pollution. We got to block the Chinese electric vehicles. Now Europeans are looking at doing the same thing on batteries or electric vehicles in China. All of a sudden the Green Party, those who got into their position because of their espousing Green or climate issues, all of the sudden is now wanting to restrict Chinese electric vehicles. Now again, this is if we win, if we are on top, let's have free market. If we are at a distinct disadvantage, we have to restrict, control or prohibit it. We have to use heavy duty to block their entry into our markets. Protectionism becomes a weapon. Forget about protection of the cilmate and the Earth. We just have to be on top. If we're not on top, forget about the Earth. This is really absurd.
The more they restrict competition, the more advantages of the Chinese EV manufacturers will be even more advance because if you restrict competition, your own automakers don't have to work very hard to enter into your protected market, but they will not be able to compete on a global basis. And this is what' going to happen in the near future. The electric vehicle market i just don't see it fading away. EU and US can try to block Chinese EVs. But given the distinct advantage of EV which now already has become well-known to the masses of consumers in the world, just the Global South alone will pick up the slack and start importing Chinese made EVs. This will really enhance further development if the EV market worldwide. As you'll know there are many developing countries which don't have oil and have to import oil and have to import processed oil in the form of gasoline or diesel. Now with electricity becoming widespread among the developing countries, electric systems, electric vehicles will gain just in terms of its cost-benefit ratio, it will be even more popular, more advanced in the developing countries in the Global South. So the electric vehicle manufacturers of China should start looking at the Global South more aggressively and start building network there.
China should look towards the south. Because we don't want their ev here. In fact during and after COVID it was said. And then reiterated after Ukraine. That the U.S. was diversifying and decoupling from China. It was announced under Trump. It was reiterated a little more gentle under biden. The policy has not changed. By definition that means LESS Chinese products not more. And after review of our supply in the U.S. the committee doing the research came back with lists of things that need to be reshored locally or produced with less outside dependence. At the same time you will notice investment into China has also been in decline. This isn't going to change anytime soon. It's been a slow transition for a few years now. It may in fact only speed up if geopolitical tensions continue to rise. At the very least this should be a warning to American companies operating in China to prepare for a exit.

It would be a much better move for the US based big 3 automakers to establish joint venture agreements with some of the well established Chinese EV makers. Chinese EVs could be built or assembled in the US using Chinese parts and American labour. Over the years the big three automakers showed little interest in making small cars as the profit margin was so low. Why not let the Chinese car makers have this share of the EV market and continue to make / focus on larger EVs with higher margins? They are essentially losing nothing. Doing this would put a lot of inexpensive EVs on the market in a short period of time which would accelerate the deployment of charging stations, service an repair depots, etc. It would also help to meet climate initiatives. This would create a win-win scenario rather than imposing mindless protectionism.

In that context which need to point out that despite its professed willingness to strengthen cooperation with China on climate change, the US has been hyping up the so-called “overcapacity” in China’s new energy sector and vowing to impose additional tariff hikes on Chinese electrical vehicles and solar products. This is self-defeating. It goes against the consensus reached in San Francisco on joint climate response, and more importantly, it will harm the world’s green economic transition and climate action. The US need to stop repairing and digging up the road at the same time, so to speak, and create enabling conditions for China-US climate cooperation and global green transition.

But, let's just consider whether the tariffs are justified as "unfair advantage" rather than fair competition.
China has already tried to dump cars domestically earlier this year, and there were reports that China was trying to sell EVs at about half price after discounts. That suggests US tariffs aren't excessive or extraordinary if the US consumer saw similar prices... a typical $40,000 list EV was selling for about $20,000. Without better analysis which might not be available in China's opaque data reporting it can be assumed that government subsidies up and down the supply chain make it possible to offer such steep discounts.
The first thing to consider is whether anything sold at that steep a discount is normally possible. Wherever you may be, how many things can you buy that's marked off half price? Is that fair to competitors and would you buy an American manufactured EV for twice the price of an imported Chinese EV?
That said, I assume that the 100% tariffs although likely doesn't apply to all situations. Before this recent announcement, Chinese SUVs have been selling in the US under the Volvo brand. The originally Swedish manufacturer sold itself to the Chinese manufacturer Gee about 10 years ago and technically has been a Chinese manufacturer since, although not necessarily selling EVs. By buying the Volva brand,, the operations and history working with the US regulatory agencies were bought, too and AFAIK hasn't caused problems. That may be the blueprint to enter the US marketplace without creating waves.... Partner with an existing reputable company that knows US requirements.
