  • These were training films made for the AA comprising a background 360 plate filmed from a bonnet-mounted GoPro Omni rig - on top of this background plate we overlayed a still 360 image (taken with the Omni) of a car interior with the windows cut out to reveal the background plate underneath.
We also used separate GoPro camera positions on the left & right wing mirrors and the rear bumper which were overlaid for the wing mirror and rear-view mirror views, all synced with the main background plate action. The final job was to animate the steering wheel to follow the direction the car takes.
This approach allowed us to show the scene from the driver's point of view without the distraction of a "headless" driver which would be the case from a helmet-mounted 360 rig. Our approach also allowed us to perfectly stitch the near distance car interior without affecting the far distance road background which would not have been possible from a traditional single 360 camera rig approach. Using the 2 separate elements of the foreground car interior and background road exterior plate also allowed us to expose for each environment individually, whereas a traditional single 360 camera rig approach would have led to either an interior that was too dark or an exterior that was over-exposed.
