When I'm dealing with older ladies I refer to them as sweetheart or love, that's because of the era I grew up in, I won't change. I work in public transport and I'm Irish living in Ireland. It's always been a term of endearment.

Among all the things I love about Catholic Unscripted is the theme song. It fits the seriousness, optimism and ‘class’ of your much-valued content. 🙏

I remember a nursery nurse twenty years ago talking about having to put a blanket between her and a child before hugging them. This was to do with 'health and safety' rules.

The worst type of voters for me are the "pendulum voters", Tory one swing Labour the next". I did have the advantage of seeing the difference years ago, but since Blair and the, "all things to all men", (or all persons) approach, it can be difficult to differentiate between the two main parties. However, the party now calling itself New Labour, from what I can see, will be an absolute disaster and I'm dreading them getting in. As for pet names, names of familiarity, etc.. like everything else, it's down to personal preference. However, in this legalistic and WOKE society, I can see why they've gone down the self-protection route.

    Dr. Ashenden,
It differs in the Southern US. Children are brought up to never call adults by their first name. It's considered very disrespectful and bad manners.
Even as an adults we use Miss or Mister before the front name of someone older as in Miss Brenda or Mr. Bob to show respect. Or even Dr.Gavin. 🙂

There is a danger in an idealistic vision of the freedom of people . Plenty of Marxist governments have been democratically elected. So was Hitler.
20 years ago the UN and its major military players like USA , Britain and European nations had an idealistic vision of what they called nation building. After a series of wars in very poor countries triggered by Marxist activism, the UN and world leaders supported UN supervised free elections.
This was followed by nation building involving very well paid contractors.
After Marxist governments were elected, the Marxists were able to get away with atrocities including genocide, and the UN stood by and said that they could not interfere because they had supervised a free election. An example is Timor Leste and the East versus West confrontation 2003 to 2006. The Marxist government enacted a policy of destroying capitalism and creating continuous revolution by starving the west of the country and bribing the east with jobs and " compensation" payments. The UN had storehouses of food in 2003 and shot at the starving people from the west of the country who pleaded for the food. Then the government armed the people of the west and claimed that the people of the East were the enemies stealing the jobs and food. The failures of nation building in Libya, Iraq and Afghanistan are all too obvious.
We have degenerated into government by lobby groups, not democracy, in most countries. Lobby groups have dangerous social agendas and they use government to create strong laws to force their agendas on others. The current silencing of women versus the trans "women" situation is an example. When cancer charities boldly claim that a cervix must be called a " front hole" to avoid offending less than 1 % of people, and governments propose jail terms for misgendering someone, you know you have a completely unrepresentative form of government. The mobs in the streets are very scary regardless of who they are chanting for.

One problem in the UK is that the major parties have dar too much power. They select the candidates rather than the local candidates choosing their party. A candidate needn’t have any connexion with his constituency-the MP for Canterbury now lives in Wales!
I hardly need mention that you could hardly slip a piece of paper between the parties’ positions. The “Conservative” party brought us gay “marriage”, continued welfare state, absurd adulation of a third-rate medical system, mass immigration (including the legal sort), net zero nonsense, etc, etc. it has no moral vision whatsoever.

This book by M Scott Peck ‘The Different Drum: Community Making and Peace’ makes an argument for the next step beyond democracy. A snapshot of book is below.
‘ The overall purpose of human communication is - or should be - reconciliation. It should ultimately serve to lower or remove the walls of misunderstanding which unduly separate us human beings, one from another...' Although we have developed the technology to make communication more efficent and to bring people closer together, we have failed to use it to build a true global community. Dr M. Scott Peck believes that if we are to prevent civilization destroying itself, we must urgently rebuild on all levels, local, national and international and that is the first step to spiritual survival. In this radical and challenging book, he describes how the communities work, how group action can be developed on the principles of tolerance and love, and how we can start to transform world society into a true community.

    Mr. Ashenden:
What's wrong with Catholic Integralism?..I think this is the very first thing you've said that I tend to disagree with..Catholic Integralism is the closest we would have to the medieval model of the spiritual and the temporal, separate and distinct, yet united..and all united in a polity called Christendom..Res Publica Christiana. While I will admit that it may not be realistic or feasible in the present moment, it is the ideal we should always be striving for!
