  • The Conquest of the Pole ( À la conquête du Pole ) is a 1912 film made by • Georges Méliès
It was Méliès's last major film and the longest he made: 650 meters of film corresponding to 44 minutes of projection time. Méliès, who was already in precarious financial straits, had to enlist the help of Pathé to produce and distribute this colossal, which included, in addition to complex sets and myriad tricks, the enormous puppet of the Snow Giant (24:17), to move which required at least 12 men.
The story follows the same plot already used by Méliès in previous Fantastic Voyages: a group of wacky explorers set out to conquer the North Pole aboard
of the incredible aerobus designed by Professor Maboul (Georges Méliès). The adventure, which after a thousand perils, ends gloriously for the protagonists is told to us in 34 pictures:

French historian Georges Sadoul describes À la conquête du Pole as Méliès's masterpiece, but a masterpiece completed too late, as if Giotto had finished his best work in the time of Michelangelo or Raphael. Certainly this film can be regarded as the summa of the art of the Magician of Montreuil, the film in which Méliès presents, in the most sophisticated and perfect manner, all his varied arsenal of tricks and artifices.
The Conquest of the Pole was released in France on May 3, 1912 to the almost total indifference of the public: trick films and fantastic journeys no longer interested him. Ten years separate this film from • Viaggio sulla Luna (19... , little or nothing seems to have changed in Méliès's cinema other than the means employed or his technical mastery, but if we compared this film with the contemporary Quo Vadis? , we would immediately get an idea of how far the history of cinema had come by leaving Méliès behind.

I am 52, and yet.... I still find this entertaining and interesting. 112 years ago, and yet they still did such a great work WITHOUT anything computer! I wonder if these people ever thought that 112 years later, others would see this and enjoy it?

Here in rural France I dream of finding some of these breathtaking props in a barn, now lost and forgotten under three feet of straw. Or perhaps a backdrop used to line a wall.
I am sure a few of them must survive... I feel it in my bones. 🌝 🎥

For me it is clearly the second best movie of Méliès behind Le Voyage dans la Lune thanks for publishing it!

Some film critics judge it to be Méliès' true masterpiece, but a masterpiece that should have been made 10 years earlier

Extraordinary production, very ambitious and creative for the time. It, however, won the 'Gesticulation Extraordinaire' award that year.

No the person who posted this with an English title wasn't smart enough to put English subtitles.

just swap the auto translation captions to english and presto, its english. But it's a silent film, one can usually grasp whats going on without needing to read the cards.

    • @iconaus
      @iconaus  2 місяці тому +1

Why did you title this movie in ENGLISH if the subtitles are in Italian and French is being used in the actual film? Silly. Plus COMMERCIALS...5 minutes into the film? Done. This is a waste of time.
