No, he’s a point guard because he plays point guard. If he were always sharing the floor with another pg (hypothetically say he were teammates with a magic, or Kidd, or Stockton, etc), then you could say he’s playing SG because there’s another pg on the floor. The fact is, curry has always been the only pg on the floor for the majority of his career. The reason lebron was listed as a SF in Miami is because he shared the floor with a pg in chalmers or cole. In 2020, he was listed as a PG because there was no other pg on the floor with him. If they subbed rondo in and they played together, rondo was considered the PG and James was considered a forward.

Forget the positions, just have the debate about who is better. Curry is better and these guys just say “he’s not a real pg” so the argument is changed to what position is he really as opposed to who the better player is.
It doesn’t make sense to even dismiss the argument with that tactic because Magic’s career gives them so much ammo you don’t need to go there. And I’m a guy that leans Steph
The whole position debate is so stupid, because it’s such a semantics take. Who cares about play style? He plays at the point guard position, and arguably plays better from that position than Magic, so thereby, he is arguably a better pg. Like it’s not that crazy of a concept to grasp

RJ said Steph doesn't initiate the offense meanwhile Magic does and that means Steph is a shooting guard. The reason Steph doesn't initiate the offense as much is because ever since Steve Kerr took over as head coach in 2014-15, he wanted to utilize a motion offense and Steph was the perfect guy for it, because he's the best off ball player and shooter ever. He's so versatile that he can dominate both off and on ball, but because the Warriors were built around guys like Draymond, Iggy, Bogut, etc. those are all guys who are connective passers and playmaking hubs, so it would be stupid for Steph/Kerr to not utilize those guys' skillset to the best of their ability. They are also play finishers too, we all know Iggy, Bogut, etc. could always catch nice lobs, or Dray back in his prime was a solid catch and shooter, but the whole argument for what makes Steph so great is because he also wants to maximize those guys and use their other abilities too, and in a system with great off ball movement players like Steph himself, Klay, KD, etc. it'd be absolutely stupid not to do that as it makes it so hard to defend. It's just so disingenuous to penalize Steph for being incredibly versatile, yet like LOW said, no one does this for any other player, like Bron for example. Which other players in NBA history could provide incredible spacing, off ball movement and playmaking, incredible screen setting for a 6'3 guard, while also playing in defensive slanted lineups with 2 or more non-shooters on the court and make it look great? That's incredible impact and makes the case for best offensive player ever for Steph, while Magic had to have the ball in his hands to really maximize his offensive impact. Steph also averaged more assists before Kerr took over (go look at his 2013/2014 stats), so he has shown he can be a very good passer, and a more traditional point guard by initiating the offense, while also being a huge scoring threat. Even in the first year of Kerr as head coach, in a motion offensive system, Steph average 24 PPG and 7.7 AST, so he really can do it all. Ultimately it's a bit of a coin flip for me. I'll take Steph because I think he's just better overall and I'm a bit biased, but I think people are more disingenuous with their arguments when it comes to these two, rather than making actual logical rebuttals.
People not seeing this are just casuals. Steph, especially in the clutch, pounds the hell out of th ball and initiates the offense. Penalizing him for getting doubleteamed after a Dray screen who gets a easy 4-3 situation and saying he didnt initiate the offense is ridiculous.
It’s not hard. Magic is great because he was a great point guard. Curry is great for redefining what a point guard is, what you deem greater is souly your opinion

The debate on greatness is close but I think Curry is a far better player. I think the biggest issue for people is that Magic had a very strong start to his career and Curry was just okay.
Magic averaged 18 7 7 on that team, and Steph averaged 17.5 4 4 on a team whose best player was monta ellis (who literally plays the same spot). Curry literally overperformed in his rookie year to what was expected.

These players do not even function in the same way, they needed to do different things for their teams each was winner in their own way. If you threw magic on the warriors they would not operate as well and vice versa because of how the teams were designed. This constant X guy is better the Z guy is getting so old it’s like nba media cannot figure out new sh8t to talk about. They play in different eras with different rules different teammates and different coaches against different teams what are we even doing.
you can literally use the same logic with football, lamar jackson he a quarterback but his best attribute is running so it makes no sense when they say steph not a point guard
The reason they don’t want to call Steph a point guard is because they don’t want to give him his flowers. If we acknowledge him as a PG then we have to say he’s a the or top 2 if we don’t and call him a SG we can dismiss him as the best in his position
People forget Steph used to play as a "traditional point guard" under Mark Jackson, but then Steve Kerr and Draymond Green came in and changed the system, making Steph play a different style, however that doesn't mean Steph isn't a point guard. He is a point guard + the ability to shoot like no other, his gravity and the movement without the ball which makes him a more impactful player/point guard than Magic Johnson and the rest.
Literally no one talks style of play when talking best SG, SF, PF or Center but as soon as Curry threw his name in the ring suddenly apparently to be a PG you can only play one certain style lol lets just ignore the fact that Stockton, Nash, Zeke, the big O and Magic all played way different from each other.
Steph is a point guard by definition. Opens the floor for teammate an get them open shots he don’t have to pass them the ball to get them open shots or layups

Bill Russell was a civil rights activist without him magic might not even be able to be in the nba. This doesn’t mean he is better than magic.

You’re adding context to curry’s career whilst ignoring context in magic’s. You said one of the biggest reasons that Steph is better is that he’s more versatile, yet probably the most famous game of magic Johnson’s career was him playing at center in the finals as a rookie to close it out. Magic was a point guard who could pretty much play 1-5. Also you add the context of curry not being given the keys early in his career whilst failing to acknowledge that magics career was cut short in his prime due to HIV. I understand that accolades and MVP votes aren’t the be all and end all in terms of establishing greatness, but they are a huge factor in how we evaluate these legends. I think both players have arguments for being better than each other but magic still edges it for me.
I mean magic could play 1-5 and doing the same stuff in all of those positions. Put Magic in a team with Lebron and Draymond and ask him to play SG with a more off the ball role. Probably not great. When he says Curry is more versatyle is that he can play on ball and be the best Pick and Roll player of all time and draw double teams at 30 feet, or he can draw double teams at 30 feet but doing it without the ball. That versatility of playing on and off the ball has an insane impact.
Yeah. Teams have different things they require from their players in the positions they are assigned to. Steph and the warriors have been able to utilize his skills as a PG to great results and created a style of PG that isn't "traditional" but is effective.

Same. I’m 41 so I’ve seen a sizable sample size of call the careers of the four players you’ve named. I just think personally the bottom of the NBA is much better and so is the ceiling. Players today are playing with and against players who are simply better, IMO.
Bron vs MJ is just propaganda for the nba and there pushing it hard. Anyone not brainwashed by the internet or media knows lebron don’t hold no candle to Mike. If anything Kobe’s more similar to him and the comparisons should have stayed that way. But sadly Colorado happened and the leuage turned their back on kob after that. And thankfully when they needed a mega star post MJ bron came right when all that Colorado stuff happened Realistically brons more comparable to magic. A more athletic and defensive sound magic with a better but not great jumper is what lebron is. Bro really said the West in the 80's was one the weakest conferences. I don't know about that, Steph took a few years to work on his interior scoring (probably quicker if he didn't have to deal with his repeated injuries). He did come in to a harder conference than Magic, though. Lakers and Spurs for a good half of his career, Portland, Clipers, and Houston not far behind, OKC and Mavs for a little bit as well.
I feel like the position responsibilities conversation has become pointless. Today’s era, star players (and really most players in general) are expected to have skills for multiple positions. Well said man. I really think those with a low basketball iQ really can’t grasp Curry’s greatness over Magic and Lebron. They are driven by stats that can be miss leading at times and some individual achievements they may have over him. The ability for your star to as dangerous as Curry is without ball opens things up for him and his teammates. Mostly important, you not wasting a double team or trap on someone without the ball.
The playstyle argument is so irrelevant. Magic played pg,c and pf throughout his career and he took hook shots like a big so it’s useless to bring this up in this debate.
Magic is better to me cuz he and Steph have a WHOLE HOF career in-between them and Steph isn't gonna win again so that gap isn't gonna close. Being #2 isn't some horrendous title😂
At the end of the day, there's only 3 defined positions atp. Guard, Forward, Center. All of the elite guards can score at a high level and wings will change from SF and PF depending on the lineups.
I hear your point about Magic going to a better team and playing in a far weaker conference when comparing him to Steph. But, you need to keep that same energy comparing Magic to Bird. I don’t ever see people factoring in that Bird didn’t have Kareem and Worthy level help on his team and that he had to go through the toughest conference ever (IMO), the 80s East just to get a chance to play the Lakers. Be consistent. If you hold Magic’s conference against him for Steph, then obviously Larry was better than Magic, despite Magic having more Rings.
@@tk78junior64 Not compared to Magic. Especially since he had to go through a stacked Philly team, the Bad Boys, and Young MJ just to get to the Finals. Pat Riley > any coach Bird ever had and that West was pathetic. The Lakers had a cakewalk to the Finals that entire decade.
It’s still hilarious because Steph still brings the ball up the floor and gets assists. The fact that he’s extraordinarily above everyone else on his squad when it comes to shooting/scoring shouldn’t be treated as a negative to keep him out of specific convos 😂
There are only 8 rookie games in history where the player has had 29pts, 10 assists, 5 rbs, on 70% true shooting. Steph has 4, MJ has 2, and Caitlin Clark also has 2. He came in dishing out assists, but as you said, he changed his role to help the team, and to stop Draymond being a cone on offence.
Watching this video was like watching an exercise in cognitive dissonance and willful ignorance. Every point or example you pointed out actually worked against your argument. All you have to do is apply it in the opposite fashion and you’ll see.
Remember, Steph competes against Lebron, AD, KD, Jokic, Giannis, Luka, these are top 30 players. 4 chips, finals mvp, 2-time mvp, came into the league anorexic waif with twig ankles and 14" vertical as one of the smallest guards. Steph is not a traditional pg. He does not guard the point, and he does not initiate offense. He is just short, not a pg. Non basketball players don't understand this
What does initiate the offense mean? Get everyone in to position? He does that offball. Getting his teammates open he does that offball and on ball. Just because u like ball pounders not being aggressive doesn't mean steph isn't a pg
Ngl, this an L take. Steph is one of the only player that initiates offense without dribbling a ball. I’ve noticed in life when people view something that is unorthodox regardless if it’s sports or whatever, so many naturally don’t accept it simply because of what they’re used to.
I think magic has more titles and stats but there is a argument for sure its not just magic or curry. Magic is all around player and curry is a heavy offensive anchor.
Allen Iverson gets none of the hate Steph Curry does. AI did not care shot setting up an offense or his teammates. Bro was a walking bucket and we still call him a point guard
Steph could play in the 80s .. same skill set . Add nothing take nothing . But if u put Magic in the 2020s same skillset . Add nothing. Take nothing . Magic would be worse than Ben Simmons but Ben is taller , faster , better defense , same passer . Get it

Talk about accolades, talk about Big shot Bob…. Has far more rings than 99.99 percent of the league and is never mentioned in the top anything…. That’s why we don’t judge solely off accolades
So… you used the term playmaker. If I used that term in football. What would be the first position it most likely would apply to? Quarterback? Same with the NBA. It would apply to a point guard. That is what defines the position. And that’s what people are saying. So your point is moot. You said it yourself. You think Steph is a better player. That doesn’t mean he’s a better point guard. Although, I don’t think he a better player. Especially all around. I think Justin Fields is a better football player than Kirk Cousins. That doesn’t make him a better quarterback.

Steph is a PG because he redefined the position
He didn't refine the position, he helped redefine the long-range game overall (along with analytics). Combo Guards or scoring Point Guards isn't a new thing though. Steph is just a better shooter than everyone else.

Thank you, it’s almost like no one actually paid attention to steph before Steve Kerr took over. Steph was consistent 8 assist a game type player.
People not seeing this are just casuals. Steph, especially in the clutch, pounds the hell out of th ball and initiates the offense. Penalizing him for getting doubleteamed after a Dray screen who gets a easy 4-3 situation and saying he didnt initiate the offense is ridiculous.

Like those Utah Jazz didnt make the playoffs until 84 and they were 1mediocre until 93. So i wouldnt say that Magic played against a great Utah team.

@@cr5564in no way does he have more significance to the NBA. He did not shape a new era of play style and damn near forced every player around the world to shape their game differently. Not even close.
Steph is a PG but Magic is still the better one. Better passer, better rebounder, more versatile, more physically gifted, more rings mvps FMVPs and stat titles, greatest passer of all time. It’s not even a debate to me a whole Hof resume still separates Steph from Magic
Did Magic redefine what it means to be a PG? That's my answer. I can confidently say that Magic won't have the same career as he did if were to get drafted by anyone other than the Lakers and Celtics. But Curry will still have the same career because his first ring was made from the drafts. Look at Ben Simmons, who has the same build, and skillset as Magic and where is he now? A player without a jump shot in the modern NBA is useless.
@@hrsh-zf6mj u act like Simmons wasn’t such a good player early on when he still gave a fuck that he was drawing LeBron comparisons and made multiple all star teams in his first few seasons. Magic did redefine the PG, nobody had ever seen a 6’9 200+ PG before and oversized PG’s are a more common thing now. LeBron plays point half the time and he’s the same height as Magic. Magic wasn’t a great shooter but he could still hit them when open, if anything he was at least still a better shooter than Ben was, and Ben made multiple all star teams before even reaching what should have been his prime. Saying Magic wouldn’t have done what he did if he wasn’t drafted to LA but Steph would’ve done what he did no matter what is wild, cuz Steph beat an injured Cavs in 2015, choked in 2016, then had KD join him to form a superteam. If that never happens Steph has two chips tops he got just as much fortunate stuff as Magic did

ive been saying this for a while, if steph came into the league with magics roster, a weak conference and especially a prime kareem, steph would have more rings easily

You would prefer the guards to be able to score and pass. SF and PF have basically combined atp. And centers are expected to stretch the floor now. We don’t really do traditional roles anymore
Steph is not the best PG ever, that's insane. He is too bad defensively over his career, is not even top 20 as a passing playmaker, him being the greatest shooter ever can't make him the best PG ever. That's like saying Dirk is better than Tim Duncan because he is a way better shooter/scorer than him. You can't ignore other facets of the game for certain players because it fits your argument
Magic Johnson wasn't a good defender either

So is the question who is the better player or who’s the better PG?
Because it’s hard for me to hear you say Magic is the best passer and playmaker of all time, but not the best PG.
Steph will never be the greatest PG for the same reason Jordan is greater than LeBron, Jordan accomplished more than LeBron in less time, Magic has accomplished more in less time, has 1 more ring and 2 more FMVP’s, has 1 more MVP and not to mention Magic’s first ring was more legendary than any of Steph’s run. For the “Steph changed the game” narrative which is grossly overstated Magic didn’t just “change the game” he, along with Bird, are the reason there’s even a game to change in the first place, Steph has had more time yet hasn’t done as much which is why he’ll never surpass magic

As a lifetime warriors fan I even had magic bc I put him in that all time like top 7 category. That said, I think I’m just about ready to put Steph at number 1 pg. Obviously Steph is my goat 😂😂 but I am fair and have Jordan for that. I understand either or, just like how I understand LeBron over Jordan
Lost me at Lebron over Jordan. One guy didn't team hop, talk down teammates while taking credit, and actually lets coaches do their job.
The whole “is steph really a pg” convo is very redundant imo. With that being said I do have magic over curry. But I won’t disagree that Steph peaked higher as a player
LOW is confusing me because if he’s talking about who’s better it’s obviously curry but if he’s talking about who’s greater it’s magic so what is he arguing here
curry is both

Well said man. I really think those with a low basketball iQ really can’t grasp Curry’s greatness over Magic and Lebron. They are driven by stats that can be miss leading at times and some individual achievements they may have over him. The ability for your star to as dangerous as Curry is without ball opens things up for him and his teammates. Mostly important, you not wasting a double team or trap on someone without the ball.
its Steph.......

Magic had the League MVP and Top 3 GOAT candidate from Day 1. Pat Riley > any coach Bird ever had and that West was pathetic. The Lakers had a cakewalk to the Finals that entire decade.
@@juliothom2408 Well I agree I was just saying the difference in help was not crazy big

True. Shout out Domantas Sabonis, my team's All-NBA point guard.
I think magic has more titles and stats but there is a argument for sure its not just magic or curry. Magic is all around player and curry is a heavy offensive anchor.
If Steph isn't a PG because he shoots the ball, Magic isn't a PG because he was 6'9. He was a forward with playmaking skills.

Nostalgic Bias is a hell of a drug too
I remember in 2016 when Steoh and Klay shrunk in the game 7 finals and Kyrie was the only one to make the shot when the game was tied.
Yea u wrong with that... the PG is supposed to be the QB on the team the reason they say he isn't a pg is because he doesn't run the offense
